Adaptogen Protocol

"Some of the other runners kept talking about some kind of "Russian Ginseng" that really worked good and did not make you hot. I finally got some of this "Siberian Ginseng" and was able to work up to my best running time. Now days it is hard to find any professional runners that do not take Siberian Ginseng as part of their supplements before a race."   Siberian Ginseng: The Almost Forgotten, Perfect Adaptogen and Energy Booster

For some reason, lately, Eleutherococcus (Siberian Ginseng) has almost vanished from becoming a subject when health tonics for energy and stress issues are discussed. It used to be so common place and for a very good reason; It works!   Siberian Ginseng: The Almost Forgotten, Perfect Adaptogen and Energy Booster

"Schisandra extract is so powerful at mitigating mitochondrial stress in liver cells that it delays aging in  the face of experimentally induced oxidant stress."   Life Extension   Note: Schizandra is an adaptogenic panacea reputed to be good for many health conditions including mental, immune and liver

"As scientists further investigated the properties of shilajit, they determined that it is an adaptogen,13,14 which is a substance that helps the body adapt to internal and external stressors. In other words, shilajit is a natural stress-fighting, fatigue-busting substance that can not only help one feel revitalized, but can help rejuvenate tired cells. This can beneficially impact the entire body. ... It’s simple. Shilajit restores and sustains cellular energy by enhancing the production of the body’s primary source of energy: adenosine triphosphate, or simply ATP.12 ATP is the usable energy that is formed when organelles called mitochondria convert energy from food. As people age, this conversion process becomes sluggish, resulting in a body-wide energy deficiency. "   Shilajit Boosts CoQ10 Efficiency

"Intrigued by this increase in lifespan, scientists decided to take a deeper look at rhodiola’s various therapeutic properties to find out how it systemically enhances vibrant activity in the body. They found that rhodiola works in numerous pathways to optimize health and longevity. Some of the benefits include rhodiola’s ability to delay immune senescence, enhance endothelial function, prevent neurological disease, lower stress, help fight fatigue, and improve physical endurance. "   Age-Defying Effects of Rhodiola

"Rhodiola rosea is a remarkable herb that has a wide and varied history of uses. It is thought to strengthen the nervous system, fight depression, enhance immunity, elevate the capacity for exercise, enhance memory, aid weight reduction, increase sexual function and improve energy levels. It has long been known as a potent adaptogen. Adaptogens are substances that increase the body's overall resistance and help to normalize bodily functions."   Rhodiola (Rhodiola Rosea)

"Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has been used for millennia as an adaptogenic herb in the Indian Ayurvedic system of medicine.16 In that system, it is considered a Rasayana, or tonic, that can improve endurance and stamina, promote longevity, improve immunity, and enhance fertility.16,17 "   Fight Stress and Support Adrenals with Adaptogens

“Most telling of ashwagandha’s adaptogenic properties were the biochemical findings. Compared to the placebo recipients, men taking ashwagandha experienced greater reduction of exercise-induced muscle damage, greater decrease in body fat percentage, and a whopping 4.3-fold increase in testosterone levels. These studies are a powerful demonstration of ashwagandha’s ability to relieve the physiological effects of physical stress.“   Fight Stress and Support Adrenals with Adaptogens

“In one study, healthy athletic adults taking ashwagandha (300 mg twice daily) experienced a 2-fold increase in their oxygen consumption after 12 weeks, compared with placebo recipients.17 Increased oxygen consumption is an indicator of improved cardio-respiratory endurance. The supplemented subjects also experienced significant improvement in quality of life scores, compared with the placebo group. A second study confirmed and extended these findings.19 Subjects taking ashwagandha root extract (300 mg twice daily) showed remarkable improvements in muscle strength compared to placebo recipients. After just eight weeks of training:“   Fight Stress and Support Adrenals with Adaptogens

“In a large clinical trial Ashwagandha reduced cortisol levels by up to 26% while helping to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.” Nutrigenesis LLC, Note cortisol is a main stress hormone

"Siberian Ginseng Improves endurance: Looking to up your endurance? In one study, Siberian ginseng increased subjects’ time to exhaustion by more than 500% [40]. Fights mental and physical fatigue: Other research shows that it can improve resistance to both cognitive and physical fatigue.[41, 42] Boosts immune system: There’s also promising evidence that this adaptogen has immunity-boosting effects and can increase t-cell count.[44]"   12 Best Adaptogens

"Traditional healers have used Siberian ginseng (not to be confused with Panax ginseng) to fight fatigue, maximize physical performance, and improve overall immunity and longevity. Research backs their practices."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Rhodiola Rosea Fights fatigue and exhaustion: Rhodiola is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is often used to promote vitality and immunity. Rhodiola can reduce fatigue and exhaustion in prolonged stressful situations and can also reduce c-reactive protein.[35, 36] (If you commute, you’re in prolonged stressful situations every day!) Boosts cognition and performance: There’s also plenty of evidence to show that rhodiola will improve cognition, independent of fatigue-reduction. A study on the effects of rhodiola on physicians on night duty fatigue showed that the herb could improve performance by about 20%, regardless of fatigue levels.[37] Improves mood and lowers depression: Rhodiola could also improve your mood and decrease the symptoms of depression.[38] Improvements in feelings of well-being might be, in part, caused by rhodiola’s effect on serotonin levels.[38]"   12 Best Adaptogens

"Reishi Mushroom Boosts the immune system: Reishi contains antioxidants which protect cells from oxidative damage. With this protection comes the ability to be more resilient and respond to threats properly. Detoxes your system: A study of 300 one-day-old male broiler chickens fed a contaminated diet of aflatoxin (poisonous carcinogens produced by mold) showed that when Reishi was introduced to the diet, it counteracted the negative effects of the aflatoxin. This suggests that reishi is protective of the immune function and helps detox the system – especially useful when you’ve been exposed to allergens or toxins. Fights cancer: Studies on different types of cancer show the possibilities of Reishi as an antitumor and cancer preventative. "   12 Best Adaptogens

"Panax ginseng is probably the most well-known adaptogen. Traditional Chinese Medicine has used ginseng for a wide variety of treatments, especially in preventative practices and as a performance enhancer and immune booster. You may have also heard that it enhances libido, although that aspect is way over-marketed. There are more than a dozen forms of Panax ginseng. Only five of them are used medicinally, and two very popular ones are Korean red ginseng and white ginseng. There’s science to back up claims about this root that resembles two legs of a human."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Mucuna pruriens, also known as the dopa bean, has a high content of L-dopa which is a precursor to the neurotransmitter dopamine. This adaptogen is known for its ability to boost your mood, lower stress, improve mood, reduce anxiety, and help you focus. Some people with ADHD find it works as well as Adderall at keeping them calm and productive."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Dopamine is essential for mood, and when you don’t have enough, you can struggle with stress and anxiety. While you don’t want to take too much Mucuna, adding some to your diet can be effective at calming the nervous system and reducing anxiety, stress and even depression. While reducing stress, Mucuna has been shown to improve semen quality in infertile men. After three months of taking a daily dose of Mucuna, 120 men showed a decrease in stress and increase in sperm count. Boosts productivity and focus: Taking Mucuna can give you that extra focus to get things done. L-dopa, the main compound found in Mucuna, has been studied for its ability to increase focus and learning in adults. One study in adults ages 21-28 showed it increased reaction time, while another showed lasting memory recall of new words."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Holy basil, or Tulsi, is an herb used in Ayurvedic medicine and is traditionally used as an adaptogen, aphrodisiac, and liver supporter. It’s also used for longevity! Protects liver: Studies show that this herb can be an effective liver protector, and is especially potent when paired with milk thistle, another liver supporter.[16] Lowers stress and anxiety: Other practices include using holy basil as a stress reducer, antioxidant, and anti-anxiety supplement. Increases muscle mass: Holy basil is high in ursolic acid, a compound also found in apple peels, that may affect body composition by increasing muscle mass and decreasing body fat, although there’s not enough solid evidence out there yet showing this really works. ... Boosts libido: Holy basil is also known to be both an anti-fertility agent and libido enhancer, so this could be a fun herb for couples not ready to conceive. Holy basil is one of the only aphrodisiac and testosterone boosting-supplements, while also being reducing fertility in men, and researchers aren’t entirely sure why. Some animal studies suggest that it could also be tied to its high ursolic acid content.[23, 24] The ursolic acid could prevent spermatogenesis."    12 Best Adaptogens

"Maca is a Peruvian root that grows in the Andes and is becoming known for its abilities to support sex drive and boost fertility, which can go down in times of stress. Boosts libido: In multiple studies with men and women, Maca has been shown to increase libido and the desire for sex. From antidepressant-induced sexual dysfunction to erectile dysfunction, Maca can boost the libido and get you in the mood. Increases fertility: Maca has also been shown to increase fertility in both men and women. For men, Maca improves sperm count and motility (their ability to move through the woman’s reproductive system). For women, Maca encourages overall hormone balance, which can support regulation of the woman’s cycle."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Changa mushrooms can be found growing in the forest on birch trees resembling a large clump of dirt. But the benefits of this fungus are astounding. Those who live in Russia and Siberia have used this adaptogenic mushroom for thousands of years. Known as a folk medicine in the past, it is now being recognized in research and has shown its power in supporting cellular health. While mushrooms are not part of the Bulletproof Diet, well-sourced, high-quality medicinal mushrooms do serve a purpose as supplement. You shouldn’t, however, eat mushrooms as part of your meal plan."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Several human studies show that ashwagandha decreases anxiety, stress, c-reactive protein and cortisol.[9, 10, 11] The decrease in cortisol is worth talking about, especially when you compare the effects of ashwagandha to those of other stress-reducing supplements. Studies show ashwagandha decreased stress 14.5-27.9% in healthy but stressed people.[9] (note: if you check email or Facebook, at least part of your body is stressed…you’re human.) Ashwagandha may also be effective when used synergistically with alcohol to reduce stress and anxiety, although I think you’re better off skipping the alcohol or at least choosing a clean one and mitigating its harmful effects when you’re stressed."    12 Best Adaptogens

"Astragalus is a fundamental adaptogenic herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is primarily used for longevity, to fight inflammation, and for kidney support. It can also reduce levels of c-reactive protein, one of the inflammation markers that you can drive down with the Bulletproof Diet. Astragalus has 126 useful components, mostly flavonoids, saponins and polysaccharides. Astragalus is particularly interesting in that it’s the only natural substance that contains cycloastragenol, a molecule that can lengthen telomeres by activating telomerase production by 2-3x.[32, 33] Telomeres are structures on the end of chromosomes that, the shorter they become, the closer that cell is to dying. By lengthening telomeres, you could essentially delay cell death and slow down aging. The length of your telomeres is related to your lifespan, which is why protecting your telomeres may be key to aging gracefully."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Bacopa monnieri is a creeping marsh plant that is traditionally used as a nootropic (cognitive enhancer), for longevity, and as an adaptogen to help with anxiety and depression. It’s possible that the improved cognition is likely a result of the reduced anxiety. Bacopa is an effective adaptogen and can help you cope with stressful situations and decrease stress in all regions of the brain.[25] It’s also an antioxidant. There’s some solid research on its effects on memory and can reliably improve memory in both healthy people and those experiencing cognitive decline. Studies show improvements in verbal learning, memory acquisition and delayed recall.[26] Other studies showed an increase in retention of new information, likely from a decrease in forgetting (as opposed to an increase in rate of learning).[26, 27] Bacopa promotes communication between neurons by increasing the growth rate of nerve endings."    12 Best Adaptogens

"Bacopa is best for reducing anxiety and stress, relieving symptoms of depression, improving cognition, reducing free radicals, boosting memory, protecting against toxic metal overload."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Rhodiola is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is often used to promote vitality and immunity. Rhodiola can reduce fatigue and exhaustion in prolonged stressful situations and can also reduce c-reactive protein. ... Boosts cognition and performance: There’s also plenty of evidence to show that rhodiola will improve cognition, independent of fatigue-reduction. "Adaptogens are unique plants or herbs that support your adrenal system. They help balance your hormones, so you can manage your stress response on a day to day basis. They adapt to what your body needs and have the ability to regulate your system up or down depending on the need in the moment."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Cordyceps is best for Combating fatigue, Enhancing memory, Supporting brain function, Fighting free radical damage, Increasing endurance and exercise performance."   12 Best Adaptogens

If  you are  high (in several specific stress related and other measures)  an adaptogen can help bring you down; if you are low it can help bring you up. Adaptogens thus aid your bodies natural homeostasis.

Adaptogens in Action

“Adaptogens are nutrients that have been used for thousands of years to help counteract the negative effects of stress by restoring the body’s natural balance. Modern research has now confirmed that specific Adaptogens can help the body fight the harmful biochemical and emotional effects of stress. The result is improved mood, greater energy, reduced incidence of chronic disease, and increased longevity.5,6  In this article, we’ll discuss the four Adaptogens best-suited to help naturally neutralize the effects of chronic stress.“    12 Best Adaptogens

"In India and China, soldiers have used adaptogens for centuries to handle the stress of combat, recover faster, and increase their energy. Today, you can use adaptogens for – you guessed it – their adaptogenic properties: they help your body adapt to biological and psychological stress by making it easier for you to balance your hormonal systems. What does that mean, exactly? Adaptogens help you cope with common symptoms of living in the modern world, including fatigue, impotence, and infertility. In other words, adaptogens make you more resilient in all facets of life, giving you energy, focus, strength and a better overall mood."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Chronic stress can be harmful to our emotional and physical well-being. It increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, diminished immune function, impaired cognitive function, and depression—and evidence shows that it contributes directly to accelerated aging and premature death. ... modern research has now confirmed that specific adaptogens can help the body fight the harmful biochemical and emotional effects of stress. The result is improved mood, greater energy, reduced incidence of chronic disease, and increased longevity.5,6 "   Fight Stress and Support Adrenals with Adaptogens

"Adaptogenic herbs help you adapt to stress by balancing your body’s response to stress. They can help increase, decrease or harmonize your cortisol and other stress hormone levels."   Supplements for PMS

"Your adrenals are the same way. You want them to make stress hormones quickly when needed, then to stop making the hormones as soon as you’re done. That’s what adaptogens do – they make your adrenals react more quickly, so you spend less time and energy making stress hormones."   12 Best Adaptogens

"Radishes contain raphanin (mainly sulfur),which is responsible for keeping the production of thyroid and calcitonin (a peptide hormone) in normal balance. With proper amounts of raphanin circulating in blood plasma, the thyroid won't under or over produce these two hormones. This makes balancing the thyroid, treating thyroid diseases as well as Graves disease a small miracle of the tangy, little red radish. The sulfur amino acids in radish juice help break up fat deposits in the liver as an added bonus."   RADISHES AND THE THYROID

"Studies show that [Panax] ginseng is effective when used to improve cognition and focus.[1] The improvement in cognition is most likely a result of a decrease in fatigue (kind of like coffee). In studies where individuals were not already experiencing fatigue, they did not see an increase in cognition.  Research shows that taking panax ginseng improves the quality of erections in men suffering from erectile dysfunction [2, 3, 4]. It also stimulates sexual behavior (e.g. friskiness) in animal studies.[30] Other research in post-menopausal women found that Korean red ginseng improved their sexual arousal. Lowers blood sugar: There’s also some evidence that ginseng can lower blood glucose levels, although it doesn’t appear to have any effect on people that don’t have an existing condition like diabetes or hypertension, for example.[5, 6] Large human studies are lacking though and there’s conflicting results in the studies that do exist."   12 Best Adaptogens

Adaptogenic foods and herbs, such as rhodiola, help the body withstand stress. In a broader sense adaptogens help the body ADAPT to many situations; they help your body get what it needs. These adaptogens have for thousands of years been known as "panaceas" that can be used to prevent and treat a wide variety of health problems. They often improve your hormone process such that some of your basic immune and energy processes become more efficient, often much more efficient.

If you look below at the many functions of adaptogens you will probably decide as I have, to get many Adaptogens into your life on a daily or weekly basis, Some adaptogens work better for some people than others. I especially like Siberian Ginseng and never fail to take it on hikes or before a day of exercise. I take Astragalus and Ashwagandha every day for many reasons including longevity.

IMO try to work many of these adaptogens into your daily/weekly diet of must have Ingestibles.

Adaptogens Are by Definition Anti Cancer

According to author/lecturer raw food herbalist David Wolfe, “Changa is definitely the most powerful anti-cancer herb that I know of in the world. If somebody said, ‘I have cancer. What should I do?’ That would be the first recommendation I would make. It tastes delicious. It tastes like vanilla."   Newly Discovered Old Russian Folk Remedy Prevents and May Cure Cancer

Changa was approved for treating cancer by the Moscow Medical Academy of Science in 1955.”   Newly Discovered Old Russian Folk Remedy Prevents and May help Cure Cancer

"Shilajit is an adaptogen that helps cells and tissues survive oxidative and other stresses.45 "   Ancient Remedies Prevent Tissue Damage

"Studies on different types of cancer show the possibilities of Reishi as an antitumor and cancer preventative. Human prostate cancer cell lines were used to observe the effect on prostate cancer. Results showed that the cells were sensitive to Reishi, causing a 45% to 55% decrease in cells.[35] A study of reishi on inflammatory breast cancer also showed anticancer properties with a reduced tumor growth and weight."   12 Best Adaptogens

“The health benefits of radishes are truly impressive. They are good for the liver and stomach, the kidneys and bladder, the lungs, the cardiovascular system, and the immune system. They purify the blood and eliminate waste, detoxify the body, and are an anti-congestive. They are used to treat and prevent cancer, jaundice, constipation, urinary tract and kidney infections, skin ailments, and more. For medicinal purposes radishes are eaten whole, juiced, or concentrated and used for supplements to treat a variety of illnesses and conditions. Oil from the seeds is also used for medicinal purposes.”    Radish Health Benefits

"This suggests that reishi is protective of the immune function and helps detox the system – especially useful when you’ve been exposed to allergens or toxins. Fights cancer: Studies on different types of cancer show the possibilities of Reishi as an antitumor and cancer preventative. "   12 Best Adaptogens

"Chaga is rich in antioxidants and has shown to support apoptosis (cell death). A study performed on mice in 2016 showed that using an extract of Chaga reduced tumor size by 60%. It also showed a decrease in temperature after implantation of the tumor. The decreased temperature could explain the reason Chaga suppresses cancer growth by regulating energy metabolism.[1] Multiple studies performed on mice have shown that Chaga suppresses tumor growth in liver cancer,[2] lung cancer and breast cancer.[3] [4][5] It can even support the immune system during chemotherapy. Reduces blood sugar levels: Many mice studies have observed a positive effect of Chaga on diabetes. Not only does Chaga lower blood glucose levels, but also cholesterol and triglycerides. Prevents DNA damage: Stress causes a substantial amount of harm to the body leading to many different diseases. Chaga has been shown to reduce oxidative stress by almost 55%. Not only is it believed to support digestive issues, it could be a beneficial supplement to reduce oxidative stress in general."   12 Best Adaptogens   Note if you read this over and think about it you will see the possibilities of the MANY anti-cancer mechanisms in Changa

If you are concerned, even fearful of the easy to PREVENT Cancer, do as I do and work as many of the Adaptogens as you are able into your life.

Beyond this important health cancer prevention function adaptogens provide so MANY BENEFITS, you MUST IMO get to know the Adaptogens very well.

Anti-Oxidant Recycling Can vastly Increase Your Antioxidant Capacity

"Another very important property of ALA is its ability to salvage and recycle other antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Glutathione. When any of these antioxidants do their jobs and are used up, ALA can make them serviceable again. Because of these characteristics ALA is very active in every cell and in the spaces between the cells."   Doctor Burt  Berkson, MD, PhD

"It is, in fact, DHLA that regenerates vitamin C and indirectly recycles vitamin E. Biochemists call this process antioxidant recycling. DHLA does its job and is transformed back into alpha lipoic acid, and then ALA can do its job again."   Doctor Burt  Berkson, MD, PhD

"As a powerful antioxidant, Coenzyme Q10 can increase absorption of other essential nutrients. It’s been shown that it helps recycle vitamin C and vitamin E, further maximizing the effects of vitamins and antioxidants that are already at work in the body."   All About CoQ10 Benefits, Foods, Supplements & More

"Glutathione is critical for one simple reason: It recycles antioxidants. You see, dealing with free radicals is like handing off a hot potato. They get passed around from vitamin C to vitamin E to lipoic acid and then finally to glutathione which cools off the free radicals and recycles other antioxidants. After this happens, the body can “reduce” or regenerate another protective glutathione molecule and we are back in business. However, problems occur when we are overwhelmed with too much oxidative stress or too many toxins. Then the glutathione becomes depleted and we can no longer protect ourselves against free radicals, infections, or cancer and we can’t get rid of toxins. This leads to further sickness and soon we are in the downward spiral of chronic illness."   Doctor Mark Hyman’s 9 Tips to Optimize your Glutathione Levels

Image result for ALA a KEY Antioxidant Player

If you visit the Anti-Oxidation recycling Protocol you will see how many antioxidants can recycle each other and other antioxidants. Please do it.

I must admit I have no direct evidence that the adaptogens contribute to antioxidant recycling. BUT I strongly suspect to find this evidence some day. In any case the adaptogens are a KEY nutrient class you NEED on a daily basis

"Hesperidin Works As an Adaptogen and Antidepressant: In the rat model of stress-induced depression, hesperidin may be able to reduce depressive symptoms. Three weeks of oral administration improved rat behavior in this study. This may be due to the control of the HPA axis, which is a stress response system (R). The opioid system is also a contributing factor for major depression. Hesperidin possessed antidepressant-like properties and positively interacts with the opioid system. It worked with opioid receptors to reduce depression symptoms in mice ".   Top 17 Health Benefits of Hesperidin

"The results showed that Cordyceps increased energy and reduced oxidative stress compared to the mice who did not receive it. It also supported the balance of energy and hormone levels. Cordyceps was shown to reverse memory loss and improve memory by supporting the nerve growth. It promoted growth of the neuron pathways, which is crucial for memory development and neuroplasticity and regeneration. This could be part of the puzzle for treatment of Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. ... A study observing 20 healthy individuals aged 50-75 years showed that endurance and breathing thresholds both increased significantly after 12 weeks of taking Cordyceps as an adaptogenic supplement. This suggests supplementation improves exercise performance in healthy older subjects (and may be beneficial for younger athletes as well)."   12 Best Adaptogens   Note so why are you NOT taking this powerhouse?

IMO try to incorporate as many of these into your Diet/Supplements as you can.  I am especially interested in the immune, energy and anti-aging properties.

( * = included in the Life Extension Longevity A.I. anti-aging product )

I take most of these adaptogens on a regular rotating basis, not every one every day, and consider it a BIG part of my (preventative) health care.
