Arterial Plaque Protection and Treatment Protocol

     

Nutrition and exercise are the KEYS to most of our health and "disease",  nowhere is this more true than with the mostly man-made disease of Arterial Plaque. Eat well and exercise and you will have little risk of Arterial Plaque.

   

"The Unified Theory of Heart Disease, proposed by Linus Pauling and Mathias Rath suggests that subclinical vitamin C deficiency (scurvy), Lipoprotein small(a) and mechanical stress at key arterial sites (such as bifurcations) are the major players in causation of heart disease.  The mechanical damage to the endothelium causes lysine and proline in collagen to be exposed.  Lp(a) has lysine and proline receptors which allow attachment to the exposed collagen forming a "patch" over the exposed area. "   Jeffrey Dach MD

Atherosclerosis

All of the current theories of atherogenesis posit Lp(a) (required to plug the dysfunctional artery) or some form of (usually oxidized) LDL particle entering the dysfunctional arterial wall. As Doctor Rath states above if we keep this from happening there will be no atherosclerosis. Vitamin C, vitamin E, omega EFAs, collagen, other antioxidants and preventing successful attacks on the vascular wall are the means to keep our vascular walls intact.

Oxidized LDL Cholesterol is the Best Predictor of Heart Disease

"Measuring OxLDL [Oxidized LDL] is now possible with a simple blood test. Research shows that even apparently healthy men with elevated OxLDL levels have a more than 4-fold increased risk for a future coronary heart disease event compared with those with the lowest levels.16 What makes this test so important for avoiding heart disease is that plasma OxLDL is a stronger predictor of such events than a conventional cholesterol blood test.16 As OxLDL levels rise, so does the presence and extent of coronary artery disease; that risk is three times greater for those with the highest versus the lowest OxLDL levels, and nearly 17 times as great in those who also have high cholesterol.15 "   Measuring Oxidized Cholesterol

"Fat molecules are especially vulnerable to oxygen,71 which is found in abundance in arterial blood. When the fat and oxidation come together, the resulting chemical reactions change the shape and the function of fat molecules.72 Your body tries to handle oxidized fat molecules with antioxidants, but if the antioxidants become overwhelmed, then the cholesterol molecules including LDL and HDL become oxidized. This oxidized LDL will damage the walls of the artery. Once there, specialized cells called macrophages identify oxidized fats as “foreign” materials, and engulf them to take them out of circulation.73,74 But these oxidized LDL laden macrophages can accumulate in the arterial wall, beneath the delicate endothelial layer, where they reside as so-called foam cells.75,76 And foam cells, in turn, trigger inflammatory changes in the arterial wall, which eventually lead to the formation of an inflammatory plaque.16, 77-79 Since oxidized LDL is a powerful initiator of this devastating process, it is important to keep oxidized LDL levels at a minimum. Inflammatory plaque contains white blood cells and cellular debris, along with inflammatory signaling molecules.80-82 Drawn by oxidized fats, macrophages from the immune system swarm into the inflamed plaque area, consume the oxidized LDL, release toxic chemicals that cause swelling and inflammation and form foam cells.14 These foam cells then die creating debris that fill the inflamed tissue and perpetuate even more inflammation.81,83 Levels of oxidized LDL cholesterol within plaques are nearly 70 times greater than in circulating blood.14 "   Measuring Oxidized Cholesterol

The fat soluble antioxidants, vitamins D, E and K, vitamin C and other antioxidants will insure the LDL packet lipoprotein membrane itself does not oxidize. It is the oxidization of the LDL membrane that often begins the atherosclerotic process. If we prevent this from happening we may prevent MUCH of CVD as well as atherosclerosis.

    

Atherosclerosis Process   Note this is a fairly good description of the atherosclerotic process except for the treatment of the LDL entering the artery wall through the endothelium. First an LDL packet that is protected from oxidation is much less likely to enter; second it is the small dense forms of LDL (Lp(a) that usually enter. So protect all LDL from oxidation and create less small dense LDL. Third protect your endothelium with vitamin C and collagen and there will be less opportunity AND REASON for LDL to enter. Forth protect your endothelium from damage from excess insulin by not eating SUGAR and simple carbs. 

Finally HDL is the backup to all this, if your HDL is HIGH you can mildly fail all else and the HDL will have your back as it transports the oxidized LDL out of your arteries to your liver and DESTRUCTION.

1) You must take at least 3 grams of Vitamin C/day as supplemental vitamin C and get all the ascorbate, natural vitamin C, from your food as you can. Raw food is best as vitamin C is destroyed by heat.

2) The fat soluble antioxidants, vitamins D, E and K, vitamin C and other antioxidants will insure the LDL packet lipoprotein membrane itself does not oxidize. It is the oxidization of the LDL membrane together with a lack of vitamin C that often begins the atherosclerotic process.

HDL

“Those with HDL levels below 35 had an eight-fold higher incidence of cardiovascular disease than those with more than 65mg/dl of HDL.  And not only that, but each 1mg/dl increase in HDL cholesterol resulted in a 6% lower risk of death from heart attack.” The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)

3) You must get your HDL Cholesterol up to at least IMO 65 mg/dl. This HDL will help to mop up any oxidized LDL that happens to be circulating looking to start trouble somewhere.

Vitamin D

"Vitamin D is now being recognized as an important risk factor in heart disease which is the commonest cause of death in industrial countries. Individual clinicians are enthusiastic, although the importance of vitamin D in heart disease still lacks wide recognition."     Good Vitamin D Treatise

4) You must achieve a blood level of vitamin D of at least 60 ng/ml either with lots of sun or vitamin D3 supplements coupled with adequate sources of sulfur. As Doctor Seneff, Doctor Mercola and MANY others have stressed your very best source of vitamin D and cholesterol sulfate is the SUN.

Processed Vegetable Oil

This chart shows the increase in processed unsaturated fatty acids consumed in the USA in the last one hundred years. The major rise began just before WWII when the use of refined vegetable oils started to burgeon. The refined vegetable oils IMO are a major cause of both CVD and cancer.

5) You must totally avoid denatured Omega EFAs found largely as denatured Omega 6 EFAs in processed vegetable oil (See Polyunsaturated  Oils Protocol). Junk food is often made from this denatured processed vegetable oil or it's hydrogenated siblings.

Homocysteine

"Homocysteine is a naturally occurring amino acid. But too much of it irritates the lining of your blood vessels and prevents them from dilating. This increases your risk of heart attack and stroke. One study found that levels of homocysteine were dramatically higher in men who died from heart attacks. They discovered that men with high homocysteine levels were four times more likely to suffer a fatal heart attack than those with lower levels."   Doctor  Al Sears MD, Note it is homocysteine NOT cholesterol that is a major CVD problem

6) You must avoid all (Homocysteine) lingering in your blood. This is rather easy to do and is salubrious for MANY body processes beyond arterial plaque formation. Basically all you must do is insure you ingest the complete (Vitamin B Complex) every day.

Sunshine

7) Doctor Stephanie Seneff PhD believes your heart and brain BOTH require cholesterol sulfate to function. This cholesterol sulfate is created by sunshine on your skin or in your blood stream in arterial plaque. Thus it is possible that a FUNCTION of SOME arterial plaque may be lack of sunshine. Incroyable but perhaps true. So folks get that sunshine, you KNOW you need it.

Triglycerides

8) You must avoid and combat excess triglycerides which may encourage arterial plaque. Sugar and simple carbs are the PRIME cause of excess triglycerides.

How the Initial Break in the Artery Wall is Facilitated

"What if the cholesterol structure in the arterial intima contained significant amounts of oxidized or nonfunctional parent omega-6 attributable largely to ingestion of foods containing LA oxidized or otherwise damaged in the course of routine food processing, before any in vivo oxidation? We know that the intima consists of a single layer of endothelial cells containing significant LA, but no ALA. Consumed, processed LA deposited in arterial intimal cell membranes leads to abnormal oxidation at the vascular injury site, thus causing injurious inflammation. In this case, abnormal oxidation involves formation of a hydroperoxide from LA. What else could cause LA in the endothelial cells to become oxidized? Could significant amounts of LA already defective from routine food processing transported by LDL-C be the real culprit?" Doctor Brian Peskin PhD, Note LA is omega 6 EFA. IMO Brian has nailed the initial break in the endothelial layer it is often from the processed defective vegetable oil we are consuming by the 100,000 of tons. IMO it is clear that the (highly processed denatured omega 6 oils) and (Homocysteine)  are the chief culprits in the initial break in the Endothiailal cells which start the atherosclerotic process. There are others. Anything causing inflammation may injure the Endothiailal cells. Once this break occurs if we do not have enough vitamin C and the other collagen components we will be unable to correctly repair this break. Thus we have begun the process of building arterial plaque.
