Cruciferous Vegetables Protocol

These Cruciferous vegetables are a must. Have several large servings a week.

  

Sulforaphane, which is a potent inducer of Phase 2 liver detoxification enzymes, which detoxify carcinogens, also has a dose-dependent ability to induce cell growth arrest and cell death via apoptosis in both leukemia and melanoma cells. Oncology Report

"Our study corroborates the notion that sulforaphane has chemopreventive activity…Our research has substantiated the connection between diet and cancer prevention, and it is now clear that the expression of cancer-related genes can be influenced by chemopreventive compounds in the things we eat." In this study, sulforaphane was able to completely eradicate H. pylori in 8 of 11 laboratory animals that had been infected with the bacterium.

“Three-day-old broccoli sprouts consistently contain 20 to 50 times the amount of chemoprotective compounds found in mature broccoli heads, and may offer a simple, dietary means of chemically reducing cancer risk.” Paul Talalay MD John Hopkins University

“Consuming broccoli results in complex changes to signaling pathways associated with inflammation and carcinogenesis in the prostate.”  Traka et al, Note this will probably apply to the breast also

"I3C was found to be superior to 80 other compounds, including tamoxifen, for anticancer potential. Replacement of all the chemically altered estrogen drugs, such as tamoxifen, with a new generation of chemically altered indole drugs that fit in the aryl-hydrocarbon receptor and regulate estrogen indirectly may prove beneficial to cancer patients."    Bitonti et al. 1999, Note Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is a precursor of Diindolylmethane (DIM). DIM is IMO the better way to go as there are some safety questions with supplementing I3C directly. Both are found in cruciferous vegetables.

A special group of vegetables called cruciferous vegetables have excellent cancer fighting properties. All these vegetables are high in sulfur (See Sulfur Protocol). Sulfur is often lacking in our diet.  To preserve the often volatile sulfur compounds do not over cook your cruciferous vegies. MSM (See MSM Protocol) is also an excellent source of sulfur.

Cruciferous Vegetables increase glutathione (See Glutathione Protocol) production.  Cruciferous Vegetables contain a substance called diindolylmethane (DIM). DIM (See DIM Protocol) has been proven to help the body to convert the most dangerous form of estrogen (See Estrogen Dominance Protection Protocol) estradiol into a less dangerous form estriol.

Research suggests that these cruciferous vegetables which contain a phytochemical known as isothiocyanates can stimulate our bodies, to break down potential carcinogens. They work by preventing the transformation of normal healthy cells into cancerous cells. A phytochemical in cruciferous vegetables may help to restore your immune system as you age. UCLA researchers found that the phytochemical, sulforaphane, switches on a set of antioxidant genes and enzymes (See Enzymes Protocol) in specific immune cells, which fight the damaging effects of free radicals.

Estrogen Dominance and Fat Loss

DIM is a balancer of Estrogen metabolism and also raises progesterone level when necessary. DIM has been proven to help the body to convert the most dangerous form of estrogen, estradiol into a less dangerous form estriol. Indole-3carbinol a Potent Anti-Cancer Agent

"Indole-3-carbinol (I3C) is found in anti-cancer vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli. When I3C is given to rodents before they are treated with cancer-causing chemicals (carcinogens), the number of tumors can be reduced by 96%. I3C has been shown to extend the length of the time between exposure to carcinogens and development of tumors by nearly 200%.178 One of the ways I3C protects cells against cancerous changes is by preventing DNA damage. I3C protects DNA not only in breast tissue, but in other tissues as well. A study from the Medical College of Ohio shows that I3C can cut the rate of DNA damage from chemicals in breast tissue by almost 92%.179 Others have shown that I3C decreases DNA damage in white blood cells by 82%, colon by 67%, and liver by 69%.179 This would seem almost unbelievable if it hadn't been confirmed by others who have shown that I3C can reduce DMBA-induced liver DNA damage by 90%, lung and trachea by 55%, and other tissues by similar amounts.180"   Are You Cooking Yourself to Death

According to researchers, treating older mice with sulforaphane increased their immune response to the level of younger mice.  The ability of sulforaphane to reinvigorate the immune system abilities of aged tissues could play an important role in reversing much of the negative impact of free radicals on our immune systems. Cruciferous vegies also contain I3C, indole 3 Carbinole, and DIM (See DIM Protocol) both of which will pick up your immune system.

So can we teach our old immune systems new tricks with cruciferous veggies? Many health professionals believe an aging immune system is a death sentence for us oldies but goodies. Perhaps we just got a reprieve. All you youngsters also need a top notch immune system to help keep you feeling, acting and functioning young.

To avoid harming your thyroid don’t eat these Cruciferous vegetables raw most of the time, instead lightly steam them. Lightly steaming them will preserve most of their anti-cancer and most other healthful properties. Broccoli sprouts are especially nutritious; the sprouts (See Sprouted Seed Protocol) of the plant have 30-50 times more sulforaphane than the mature broccoli. All sprouts need not and should not be heated.

Exception: Raw cabbage is especially nutritious and even though I have to constantly protect my thyroid, IMO the risk/reward favors a few thick slices of succulent cabbage once in awhile.

   

These Cruciferous vegetables are a must. Have several large servings a week.
