HDL Cholesterol Protocol

There are over a dozen easy ways to get Your HDL levels up. DO IT!

http://www.humansarenotbroken.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/tgcm.png

"Very low fat diets, less than 10% - 20% of calories as fat depress HDL."   Note these so called "low fat" diets are DISASTEROUS for your health

“Those with HDL levels below 35 had an eight-fold higher incidence of cardiovascular disease than those with more than 65mg/dl of HDL.  And not only that, but each 1mg/dl increase in HDL cholesterol resulted in a 6% lower risk of death from heart attack.” The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)

“Circulating HDL contains an enzyme that allows HDL to remove free cholesterol from arterial cell walls for metabolism by the liver.” Lehninger et al

“A study showed daily garlic oil from three cloves of raw garlic dropped total cholesterol by 7%; more importantly HDL was raised 23%”  Bastyr College

“Men and women who ate 180 mg of vitamin C a day had 11% higher HDL than those who ate 60mg of vitamin C.” Doctor Judith Hallfrisch USDA, WOW think about what 3 grams will do

“Protein foods raise HDL and increase carnitine levels.” Crayhon

“In a study artichoke dry extract improved both total cholesterol levels and improved the HDL/LDL ratio by about 20%.” Englisch et al

“In men low testosterone is associated with high LDL, low HDL, high triglycerides and HBP.  Administration of testosterone dilates blood vessels.” Channer et al

“One half of one raw onion a day will raise your HDL by up to 30%.” Victor Gurewich Cardiologist Harvard, Note garlic should also do this

“The lack of HDL the alleged cause of artery disease is just a marker of arterial calcification.” Bill Sardi, Note this would suggest vitamin K2, or MK-7,  would be a good way to raise HDL

“Curcumin reduced serum levels of cholesterol and lipid peroxides in humans receiving 500 mg of curcumin daily for seven days. A significant decrease in the level of serum lipid peroxides (33%), an increase in HDL (29%) and a decrease in total serum cholesterol (12%) suggest that curcumin may prevent arterial diseases.” Soni et al 1992

“Policosanol reduced harmful damaging LDL and increased the beneficial HDL. Policosanol (5 to 20 mg/day) decreased the risk of atheroma formation by reducing total cholesterol levels, inhibiting platelet aggregation, endothelial damage and foam cell formation in animals.”  Varady et al 2003

Book Review: This is an EXCELLENT book. You will understand fats

“Cholesterol can act as an antioxidant if you have let your mineral and vitamin antioxidant levels fall too low. High levels of oxidized cholesterol are found in LDL and HDL transport packets when low levels of food antioxidants are present.” Udo Erasmus PhD

"HDL particles seek out LDL within the artery walls and act like straws, sucking out the cholesterol and transporting it to the liver for disposal. HDL also has important antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions." Doctor Michael Ozner MD

"Niacin raises HDL levels which promotes removal of cholesterol from blood vessel walls. Niacin also mediates anti-inflammatory effects in blood vessel walls." Life Extension

"Nicotinic acid (Niacin) is the most potent treatment clinically available for lowering LDL and VLDL and raising HDL."  Digby

"Chromium supplementation of normal adult men as well as diabetics has been reported to increase HDL and decrease triglycerides and total cholesterol.” Anderson 1986

"As long as your HDL is high enough, you’re at little to no risk of heart disease. Even if your total cholesterol is 305."   Doctor Al Sears MD

"One study found after just 7 days on a diet including avocados, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels dropped by 22 percent. Meanwhile, HDL cholesterol shot up 11 percent—something most cholesterol-lowering drugs won't do!"   Doctor William Douglass MD

A simple model of HDL Reverse Transport

http://www.nature.com/nm/journal/v18/n9/images/nm.2930-F1.jpg

Overview of reverse cholesterol transport by HDL

HDL & Reverse Cholesterol Transport  Note clearly the more HDL transport you provide the less arterial plaque you will have. If your HDL reverse transport is greater than your cholesterol deposit your will not develop arterial plaque.

Triglyceride Cycle

Lipid transport and delivery systems existed in the earliest animals including insects. Our lipoprotein systems are not that dissimilar [ref 1].”    Note this is a HIGHLY recommended article you should READ to understand lipid transport

"The large chylomicron molecules and VLDL are the main carriers of triglyceride in our blood compared to the IDL, LDL and HDL molecules carrying predominantly cholesterol ester.  Remember from my previous blog on “fats” that triglyceride molecules consist of one glycerol molecule attached by an ester bond to 3 fatty acid molecules.  Triglycerides form the basis of our energy stores of fatty acids and may provide fuel for beta-oxidation to generate ATP (energy)."   A Crash Course in Understanding Lipoprotein Metabolism

"Importantly the LDL molecule does not have apoE or apoC and is therefore not cleared from the blood by the liver. The consequence of the long ½ life of LDL in the plasma is the LDL is susceptible to oxidative modification of the phospholipid monolayer containing polyunsaturated fatty acids."   A Crash Course in Understanding Lipoprotein Metabolism , Note it is the oxidation of the LDL packet that often starts CVD

"HDL is synthesized by the liver cells (and other gastro intestinal cells) and is a unique lipoprotein containing one integral transmembrane apoA apoprotein.  HDL when synthesized has very little triglyceride or free cholesterol and is essentially “empty” as its job is to acquire cholesterol from the periphery to transport back to the liver."   A Crash Course in Understanding Lipoprotein Metabolism

"So in deficient HDL (low HDL) states there is less of this carrier molecule to unload the cells and arterial wall of cholesterol content hence an independent risk for vascular disease.  Like LDL you can equally understand the MISNOMER of HDL being “good cholesterol” as low levels potentiate vascular disease whilst high HDL tends to protect against atherosclerosis BUT it is NOT cholesterol that is implicated; it is the carrier molecule HDL."    A Crash Course in Understanding Lipoprotein Metabolism

“HDLs are much more compact and smaller in size than LDL. They fit between the gap and communication junctions in the endothelium (lining of blood vessels). Whereas, LDL particles are larger and barely fit between normal gap junctions of endothelium. If the LDL particles however are 'small' their purpose is different. They are more oxidizable and denser. This tighter conformation allows movement into damaged endothelium and traumatized and inflamed tissues to provide ammunitions for macrophages to do their work.   Note this is a HIGHLY recommended article you should READ

In the diagram above we see the HDL 3 packet exchanging triglyceride fats, including cholesterol, with  LDL packets. Excess triglyceride fats are eventually passed to the HDL 2 packet and into the liver for disposition.

This system becomes very inefficient if your triglycerides get too high. Your triglycerides get high when you eat SUGAR and simple carbs which are quickly converted to SUGAR. When our body was designed there was no refined sugar, simple carbs, HFCS and all the other man made crap we eat today. Take the crap away and your body becomes a lean mean machine and will burn its fat fuel and glucose fuel with precision, efficiency and cleanness.

Keeping your HDL levels high will help clear your system of excess triglycerides. High HDL levels have become MANDATORY with today's CRAP for food. Of course not eating the CRAP sure helps.

Incomplete Cholesterol Transport Cycle

In the figure above we see some of the packets your body uses to transport the fat cholesterol. We do not see the liver produced nascent HDL pathway and other things.

HDL cholesterol is the High-Density Lipoprotein packet your body uses to collect expended fats including cholesterol and fats in peripheral tissues and arterial plaque and transport them to your liver (See Liver Protection Protocol) for disposition. A high level of HDL in relation to your LDL is desirable. A high HDL level will lower your risk of heart disease as it mops up potentially oxidized LDL and arterial plaque. For every 1% increase in HDL, your risk of a heart “event” drops 3-6%.

The famous Framingham Heart Study demonstrated conclusively that if you get your HDL level above say 65 your LDL level becomes fairly irrelevant. Folks here is one of the keys to avoiding cardiovascular disease. The lower your HDL the more attention you must give to your LDL. I try to peg my HDL above 65 and don’t worry too much about my LDL. Of course I worry enough to keep my LDL from oxidizing.

Very low fat diets, less than 10% - 20% of calories as fat depress HDL. IMO this may have been what did in Doctor Nathan Pritikin who liked to keep his fat intake below 10%.

The Beginning of Atherosclerosis and CVD

http://www.laddmcnamara.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/OxLDL-to-HDL_Cholesterol_Ratio_and_CAD_Ladd_McNamara_M.D.1.png

Oxidized LDL Cholesterol is the Best Predictor of Heart Disease

The fat soluble antioxidants vitamins D, E and K, vitamin C and other antioxidants will insure the LDL packet lipoprotein membrane itself does not oxidize. It is the oxidization of the LDL membrane that often begins the atherosclerotic process. If we prevent this from happening we may prevent MUCH of CVD as well as atherosclerosis. As we also see in the above diagram keeping your HDL high will also reduce your risk of CVD.

"A low HDL-C is a component of the atherogenic dyslipidemia of the metabolic syndrome and has been shown to be an important determinant of coronary risk. ... If raising HDL so modestly [10% - 20%] in some of the trials we've already seen can [have such a significant] impact on risk, we may be in for some real surprises when you start talking about 40%, 60%, 80%, or 100% elevation in HDL. It's going to be very, very exciting."    Doctor Peter Toth MD PhD

"Niacin raises HDL levels which promotes removal of cholesterol from blood vessel walls. Niacin also mediates anti-inflammatory effects in blood vessel walls." Life Extension

"Scientists long ago documented the ability of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) to remove cholesterol affixed to arterial walls and transport it to the liver for safe disposal. This is why it is so important to maintain HDL levels above 50 mg/dL of blood and follow steps Life Extension® has outlined to ensure optimal reverse cholesterol transport of lipids away from the arterial wall. HDL does more than just cleanse arterial walls of plaque. It also protects LDL against oxidation, while inhibiting chronic inflammation, vascular adhesion molecules, and platelet activation—factors that can all lead to atherosclerosis."   Slow-and-Reverse-Atherosclerosis

"PON-1 blocks destructive lipid peroxidation reactions,4-7 making it a crucial enzyme for aging humans to maintain. PON-1 is anchored to the surface of HDL and is emerging as a formidable defense against atherosclerosis, diabetes, stroke, arthritis, and certain forms of cancer. Pharmaceutical companies would pay a king’s ransom for a drug that elevates PON-1 levels in the body. Fortunately, scientists have discovered low-cost natural methods to elevate PON-1 and unleash its full antioxidant and anti-inflammatory power."    Slow-and-Reverse-Atherosclerosis

"HDL does more than just cleanse arterial walls of plaque. It also protects LDL against oxidation, while inhibiting chronic inflammation, vascular adhesion molecules, and platelet activation—factors that can all lead to atherosclerosis."     Enhance Endothelial Health How Pomegranate Protects Against Atherosclerosis

Read this protocol and especially the research. There are MANY ways to raise your HDL. Please pick a few or better yet MOST ways and DO IT. The health benefits will be more than worth it. If your HDL is high enough you can do a lot of things wrong, at least occasionally, and still remain healthy.

How to improve HDL levels

“Physical fitness appeared to have a greater impact on certain metabolic risk factors than body fat. Being fit correlated with lower triglycerides and higher HDL ... healthy cholesterol in women and lower blood glucose levels in men.”   Eurekalert June 17, 2010

"Atherosclerosis begins with oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Damaged LDL “clumps” together and accumulates in specialized immune system cells called foam cells. The foam cells invade blood vessel walls, triggering inflammatory responses and the formation of early atherosclerotic plaque. Inflamed plaque attracts clot-forming platelets, leading ultimately to a narrowing of blood vessels that restricts blood flow. When inflamed plaques rupture—or clots form that block blood flow entirely—tissue dies, producing a heart attack or stroke, depending on location. A dedicated group of Israeli researchers led the way in detailing how pomegranate disrupts atherosclerosis formation at each of these developmental phases—and the crucial role PON-1 plays in this process. They began with a landmark study in 2000 that focused on pomegranate’s antioxidant properties."   Slow-and-Reverse-Atherosclerosis

"Quercetin, another polyphenol found in red wine and many other plant sources, also upregulates PON-1 gene expression, protecting against LDL oxidation.47 Quercetin also possesses numerous mechanisms of action Like pomegranate ,it helps stabilize and preserve PON-1 activity against oxidative stress.48."    Slow-and-Reverse-Atherosclerosis
