Sea Salt / Table Salt Protocol

"Ordinary table salt undergoes a great deal of processing between the factory and your grocer. It is approximately 97.5 percent sodium chloride and 2.5 percent chemicals such as iodine and moisture absorbents, dried at over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit. This high heat alters the natural chemical structure of the salt. By contrast, unrefined salt is 84 percent sodium chloride and 16 percent other naturally occurring minerals, including many trace minerals like silicon, phosphorous and vanadium.”     Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

In countries with lower CHD death rates, most of the magnesium comes from table salt that is derived from seawater through an evaporative process. This type of table salt contains calcium, potassium, and large amounts of magnesium, in addition to the sodium. Table salt used by North Americans comes primarily from salt mines. As a result of being washed with hydrochloric acid and recrystallization, this purified salt contains almost pure sodium chloride. The Japanese consume 10 grams of ocean salt a day. This provides approximately 1500 mg of magnesium. This is almost four times the magnesium recommended in the RDA and five times more than the average American gets. People from the countries using sea salt suffer a higher incidence of hypertension and stroke (probably due to the higher sodium intake) but lower rate of CHD (probably due to their higher magnesium intake). Unrefined Sea Salt is salt water with only the pure water removed by natural evaporation and nothing added. Unrefined Sea salt often contains 15% less sodium than table salt and has ten times the minerals, including the all important TRACE MINERALS. Some of us may be going light on the sodium. Sea salt water contains the exact same minerals in the exact proportion as our blood.  Perhaps this is why we find such joy in returning to the sea. Unrefined sea salt is often grey in color but the more expensive products can be white.

These are dangerous chemicals like ferrocyanide and aluminosilicate. A small amount of iodine may also be added.”   You Need Salt, But Make Sure It’s the Right Kind

You want to mostly eat Unrefined Sea Salt for many reasons. Avoid table salt or refined sea salt. Table salt is sodium and chloride with many possibly harmful additives and is overly processed often at very high heat and other destructive processes. Refined sea salt is usually of less quality than unrefined sea salt.

All the studies condemning salt used only refined white salt, a biologically damaging and unnatural processed product. In the refining process, as many as 82 trace minerals and essential macro nutrients are forcibly removed and several chemicals are added, leaving only sodium and chloride with the added chemicals. This is not salt. We call it salt but it is not salt, it is highly refined sodium and chloride with added chemicals.

        

Some apparent problems with salt and hypertension

For most of us a balance between potassium, magnesium and sodium will protect against ingesting too much sodium and chloride. We need about four times the potassium as sodium in our body. We need about equal amounts of magnesium and calcium. Unless you are getting too little potassium and/or magnesium your body will keep this balance all by itself. Too much sea salt has negative outcomes usually only if you are low on potassium and/or magnesium; which  unfortunately many of are. Eating FOOD and not junk "food" or processed "food" w3ill usually "cure" the mineral and salt balance problems.

Of course table salt, a highly processed product, can probably negatively affect your blood pressure thru dozens of mechanisms and should be avoided.

I am one of those salt sensitive. My blood pressure drops significantly when I get my salt intake below 1000 mg/day or so. In the summer when hiking and sweating I find I am "burning off" salt by sweating and must increase my intake. In summer I salt to taste but find I cannot do this in the winter and must be much more aware of my sea salt intake and restrict it.

You need at least four times the Potassium as sodium in your body (See Banana Protocol). If you do not have this potassium your blood pressure may be high. The relationship between sodium, potassium, water, HBP and other factors  is complex.  The simplest thing is to ASSURE proper potassium, eating LOTS of RAW real food will assure this, If your blood pressure is still too high try cutting out all added salt; this is how I found out my salt sensitivity problem.

    

My Salt Consumption in Winter

I find I must restrict my consumption of salt in the winter when I am not sweating so profusely as in the summer.

    

Not all unrefined sea salt is the same shop around.
