Vitamin E Protocol

You MUST assure/supplement Vitamin E IMO

"As a retired physician, I can honestly say that unless you are in a serious accident, Your best chance of living to a ripe old age is to avoid doctors and hospitals and learn nutrition, herbal medicine and other forms of natural medicine [i.e. PREVENTION]. Almost all drugs are toxic and are designed only to treat symptoms and not to cure anyone. Most surgery is unnecessary. In short, our mainstream medical system is hopelessly inept and/or corrupt. the treatment of cancer and degenerative disease is a national scandal. The sooner you learn this, the better off you will be."   Doctor Allan Greenberg on 12/24/2002

http://www.encognitive.com/files/images/big%20pharma--preventative%20medicine%20kills%20return%20business.jpg

"Today's medical "industry" does not want any interference with their income stream and have no incentive to institute preventive programs. The public needs to know if they don't take personal responsibility for their health care there may not be no Medicare dollars available to cover their sick care."   William Faloon Life Extension, Note YOU MUST provide your preventive care with YOUR dollars.

“Sesame seeds may be the oldest condiment known to man. They are highly valued for their oil which is exceptionally resistant to rancidity. … Not only are sesame seeds a very good source of manganese and copper, but they are also a good source of calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B1, zinc and dietary fiber. In addition to these important nutrients, sesame seeds contain two unique substances: sesamin and sesamolin. Both of these substances belong to a group of special beneficial fibers called lignans, and have been shown to have a cholesterol-lowering effect in humans, and to prevent high blood pressure and increase vitamin E supplies in animals. Sesamin has also been found to protect the liver from oxidative damage.”   Sesame Seeds WHF

"The high vitamin E and antioxidant content of sesame seed oil makes it resistant to rancidity. Buy tahini made form hulled seeds as the hulls contain oxalic acid, phytates and enzyme inhibitors all antinutrients."   Sally Fallon, Note tahini is a sesame paste

"Animal research points to the necessity of raising levels of gamma-tocopherol for vitamin E to function. Sesame Seeds are rich in gamma-tocopherol. In their study the researchers fed nine people muffins baked with either sesame seeds, walnuts or soy oil (other good sources of gamma-tocopherol). After three days only the sesame seed muffins "significantly elevated' blood levels of gama tocopherol."   Nutrition and Cancer

Vitamin E is Preventative Medicine at its finest. You spend a few bucks to assure this essential substance in your body. You rarely visit the "doctor"; you do not take toxic "drugs";  you do not visit the "hospital; you live long and prosper. Save bucks; save your health and life; prevent problems; rarely "treat" problems.

Dr. Neal Barnard on Vitamin E. Get It from Food. Mostly Nuts & Seeds

“By increasing the intake of vitamin E rich foods or vitamin E supplements it is possible to reduce the risk of many common disabling diseases and improve the quality of life, particularly in the elderly.”    Diplock 1997, Note when supplementing it is important to get all eight components of vitamin E

“Vitamins and minerals are not functionally separable. They make each other work. Example: vitamin D is necessary for the body to absorb calcium. Copper is necessary for vitamin C activity. And so on. Mineral deficiencies can cause vitamin deficiencies, and vice versa. Epidemic mineral deficiency in America is a well-documented result of systematic soil depletion. So that is the other prime difference between whole food vitamins and synthetics: whole food vitamins contain within them many essential trace minerals necessary for their synergistic operation. Synthetic vitamins contain no trace minerals, relying on, and depleting, the bodies own mineral reserves.”  Doctor Tim O'Shea

“The greatest protective effect against iron-induced lipid peroxidation occurred when vitamin E, glutathione and NAC were combined. The combination reduced lipid peroxidation by 94%.” Milchak et al 2002

“In an epidemiological study of 87,000 female nurses those that got more than 200 IU of vitamin E a day saw their risk of cardiovascular disease drop by 34%. High intakes of beta carotene dropped their risk 22%. High vitamin C intake dropped their risk 20%. Those who got vitamin E, vitamin C and beta carotene saw their risk drop 50%.” Harvard Nurses Study

http://www.humansarenotbroken.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/tgcm.png

“You cannot get enough vitamin E in your diet to suppress heart attacks. That requires vitamin E supplements. However in our study more than 250 IU of vitamin E daily did not additionally cut heart disease. Our research shows you must take the vitamin E for about two years before its protection starts. The benefits of taking vitamin E far exceeded the benefits of lowering both cholesterol and lowering blood pressure. The risk of not taking vitamin E was about equal to the risk of smoking.” Meir J. Stampfer M. D. and Eric Rimm Sc. D. Harvard

“Taking 800 IU of vitamin E daily for three months lowered LDL cholesterol oxidation by 40%. It’s very clear that vitamin E is the most potent antioxidant against LDL oxidation. Anyone with a family history of heart disease would be foolish not to take vitamin E.” Ishwarlal Jialal, University of Texas

“Vitamin E (and selenium) gave complete protection from muscle lesions produced by copper, cobalt, tellurium, cadmium and zinc.” Van Vleet et al 1981

“Incidence of major heart disease among 87,000 nurses was 41% lower among those who reported taking between 100 IU and 250 IU of vitamin E daily for two years compared to those who did not take vitamin E supplements. The vitamin E takers also had a 29% lower stroke risk.”  Meir J. Stampfer M. D. and Eric Rimm Sc. D. Harvard

Hass avocados were found to contain the highest content of lutein among commonly eaten fruits as well as measurable amounts of related carotenoids (zeaxanthin, alpha-carotene, and beta-carotene). Lutein accounted for 70% of the measured carotenoids, and the avocado also contained significant quantities of vitamin E.  Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry Jan 2005   J Nutr Biochem. 2005 Jan;16(1):23-30.   WHF

“In a study of 2000 individuals with artery disease half were given either 400 IU or 800 IU of natural vitamin E a day the other half a placebo. After eighteen months the vitamin E takers of either dose suffered 77% fewer nonfatal heart attacks as those taking the placebo.” Professor Morris Brown and Doctor Malcom Michinson, Cambridge University

“Monkeys fed a very high fat diet and low levels of antioxidants vitamins C and E had severe arterial blockage. When these same monkeys had vitamin E added to their diet their arterial blockage dropped by one third. Adding some vitamin C along with the vitamin E to their diet for a couple of years reversed their arterial blockage by an additional 8 to 33 percent.”  Anthony J. Verlangieri Ph, D. University of Mississippi Atherosclerosis Research Center

“Vitamin E as gama-tocopherol protects animals from age related HBP.” Newaz et al

“People with HBP often have low levels of vitamin E.” Kumar and Das

“Incidences of fatal heart attack were 43% lower in the group supplementing with vitamin E as opposed to the group not supplementing.” Israel Study

“Therapeutically large amounts of Omega 3 EFAs are being used to treat many degenerative diseases. Vitamin E is important to suppress the rancidity of the EFAs in our body.” Udo Erasmus PhD

“Tocotrienols particularly gamma and delta alter the functionality of the enzyme responsible for cholesterol synthesis.” Parker et al

“In a study of fifty patients with cataracts bilberry extract combined with vitamin E stopped the progression of the cataracts in all but two patients.” Bravetti, Note WOW

“In a study of 93 individuals almost all the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome patients (54%) had a magnesium deficit (47%) with a lower total antioxidant capacity in their blood serum. The authors concluded that successful magnesium supplementation in CFS patients was followed by improvement in magnesium body stores; in serum vitamin E and in its interrelated lipid peroxidation.” Manuel et al

“The study showed that severe vitamin E deficiency causes impaired NK cell activity but that the condition is reversible with alpha-tocopherol supplementation.”  Adachi et al, Note NK, natural killer cells are a main component of your passive immune system

“High levels of vitamin C can protect levels of vitamin E in tissue and may contribute to the immune-enhancement of vitamin E.”  Niki

“Studies suggest that alpha tocopherol may not help prevent coronary heart problems unless it's combined with the gamma tocopherol form. Research also shows that too much alpha tocopherol opposes the antioxidant effects of gamma tocopherol by displacing it. If you are currently taking the conventional vitamin E, consider balancing it with a supplement containing mixed tocopherols. Life Extension

“A study of elderly subjects aged 67 to 105 years compared those vitamin C and vitamin E supplemented to a non-supplemented group. Use of vitamin E alone reduced death from myocardial infraction by 63%, cancer mortality by 59% and overall mortality by 34%. When the vitamin C and vitamin E were used together overall mortality was reduced by 42%.” Losonczy et al 1996

“Evidence demonstrates that vitamin E protects against development of atherosclerosis by retarding oxidation of LDL, inhibiting proliferation of smooth muscle cells, reducing platelet adhesion and aggregation, vasodilatation and altering the expression and function of adhesion molecules.”  Chan 1998

“Tocotrienols elicit powerful anticancer properties and studies have confirmed tocotrienols activity is much stronger then that of tocopherols.” Schwenke et al

“Animals exposed to carcinogens that were fed corn or soybean oil based diets had significantly more tumors than those fed a tocotrienol-rich diet of palm oil. Tocotrienol-rich palm oil did not promote chemically induced breast cancer.” Sundram et al

Researchers at the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center have found that taking more vitamin E as mixed tocopherols substantially reduces lung cancer. Their new study shows that people consuming the highest amounts of vitamin E had the greatest benefit. When they compared persons taking the most vitamin E with those taking the least, there was a 61% reduction in lung cancer risk.”  Mahabi et al

“Tocotrienols are better distributed in fatty cell members and demonstrate greater antioxidant and free-radical-scavenging effects than alpha-tocopherol.” Serbinova et al

“Tocotrienols possess the ability to stimulate the selective killing of cancer cells through the programmed cell death to reduce cancer cell proliferation while leaving normal cells alone.” Kline et al

“Tocotrienols cause growth inhibition of breast cancer cells in culture independent of estrogen sensitivity and have great potential in prevention and treatment of breast cancer.” Nesaretnam et al

“Tocotrienols are considered important lipid-soluble antioxidants with potent anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory activity. Therefore a daily dose of 240 mg of tocotrienols should be considered as an adjuvant breast cancer therapy.” Life Extension

“Fish oil combined with vitamin E delayed the onset of autoimmune diseases in autoimmune prone mice.” Venkattaman et al

“Alpha-tocopherol may provide better protection against CVD when it is combined with gamma-tocopherol. Both alpha and gamma tocopherol can decrease platelet aggregation, inhibit blood clot formation, protect LDL against oxidation and increase endogenous SOD protection. 80% Alpha-tocopherol and 20% gama-tocopherol is an ideal blend.” Life Extension, Note be sure to add the tocotrienols also

“Dose response studies in humans have demonstrated that 400 IU per day of vitamin E increased vitamin E plasma levels twofold and delayed oxidation of LDL.” Suzukawa et al 1998

“It is well known that alpha-tocopherol supplements decrease plasma gamma-tocopherol concentrations. What is less well appreciated is that the body intentionally retains alpha-tocopherol. A special protein in the liver, the alpha-tocopherol transfer protein, preferentially maintains blood levels of alpha-tocopherol by incorporating only alpha-tocopherol into low-density lipoprotein (LDL) for tissue distribution. Our studies, currently in progress, show that the body retains alpha-tocopherol three times longer than gamma-tocopherol.”   Maret G. Traber, Ph.D.

“Another key function regulated by alpha-tocopherol is vascular tone. Normal vascular function requires responsiveness to nitric oxide (NO). Alpha-tocopherol not only mediates NO production, but alpha-tocopherol supplementation in hypercholesterolemic patients and in smokers maintains normal artery wall flexibility.” Maret G. Traber, Ph.D.

“While both alpha- and gamma-tocopherol are potent antioxidants, gamma-tocopherol has a unique function. Because of its different chemical structure, gamma-tocopherol scavenges reactive nitrogen species, which, like reactive oxygen species, can damage proteins, lipids, and DNA.”  Maret G. Traber, Ph.D.

“The problem until now has been that the amount of gamma tocopherol and other vitamin E compounds that could be delivered to the tissues was limited. Adding standardized sesame lignans to dietary supplements, however, enhances the ability of these compounds to quench free radicals and thus provide greater protection against destructive free radical attack.Life Extension, Note grind a little sesame seed with your often grinded flax seeds

“If we do not have sufficient amounts of Vitamin C to effect a constant intracellular concentration, then oxidized LDL and Lp(a) will further attract other oxidized lipids, thus resulting in plaque formation over time. To prevent this, we must flood our bodies with an abundant supply of Vitamin C and E.” Doctor Michael Lam MD

“Vitamin E prevents white blood cells from adhering to the artery wall, thus a primary step in arterial closing has been averted.” Devaraj et al 2000, Note vitamin E keeps the LDL from oxidizing and starting the atherosclerotic process this obviates the reason for the white blood cells to enter the artery

"Effective doses are high doses, often hundreds of times more than the US Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) or Daily Reference Intake (DRI). Abram Hoffer, M.D., Ph.D., comments: "Drs. Wilfrid Shute and Evan Shute recommended doses from 400 IU to 8,000 IU of vitamin E daily. The usual dose range was 800 to 1600 IU but they report that they had given 8,000 IU without seeing any toxicity." The Shutes successfully treated over 35,000 patients with vitamin E." Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, February 2, 2009

"The almond diet led to a significant decrease in body fat by 1%, total cholesterol by 8%, and LDL cholesterol by 13%. Most importantly, researchers found that inclusion of almonds decreased blood glucose and insulin and inflammation. Alpha-Tocopherol or vitamin E levels in the blood increased, as well as the resistance of LDL cholesterol against oxidation, when tissues were tested in a laboratory environment."  Almonds found highly protective for Diabetics

"Selenium and vitamin E may offer protection against prostate cancer by changing the expression (the conversion of a gene's information) of certain genes in prostates linked to tumors. Scientists report that exposure of biopsy samples from people with cancer to vitamin E, selenium or both, expressed different genes, with the combined exposure producing results similar to that observed in people with no prostate cancer." Journal of the National Cancer Institute Vitamin E, Selenium May Alter Genes In Prostate Cancer

"Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant supplements that may help protect against cancer include curcumin, green tea and gamma tocopherol." Doctor Eric Braverman MD

"Research suggests vitamin E can lower your risk of asthma. Vitamin E appears to target free radicals caused by air pollution. In addition it stimulates the the release of body chemicals which help relax smooth muscles, including muscles that make up the airways in the lungs."   Prevention

"Cherries are one of the better sources of vitamin E."   Prevention

"A Finnish study of 944 men found those with the lowest levels of vitamin E in their blood were four times more likely to have diabetes than those with the highest vitamin E levels."   Prevention

“The brain is a site of high metabolic activity, which makes it vulnerable to oxidative damage, and slow accumulation of such damage over a lifetime may contribute to the development of dementia, In particular, when beta-amyloid (a hallmark of pathologic Alzheimer’s disease) accumulates in the brain, an inflammatory response is likely evoked that produces nitric oxide radicals and downstream neurodegenerative effects. Vitamin E is a powerful fat-soluble antioxidant that may help to inhibit the pathogenesis of dementia."    Vitamins E and D and Dementia

“Natural Red Palm Oil is rich in natural carotenoids (vitamin A), is a good source of tocopherols (natural vitamin E) and contains tocotrienols. It contains about 50% naturally occurring saturated fats and 50% unsaturated fats. The fats in Natural Red Palm Oil are not synthetically hydrogenated or altered in any way. The main fatty acid found in Natural Red Palm is oleic acid, which is the main fatty acid in olive oil. Natural Red Palm Oil is a vegetable oil and therefore does not contain any cholesterol, which is only found in animal or dairy products.”   Natural Red Palm Oil

How Doctors Use (Or Should Use) Vitamin Therapy

Vitamin E the Major Fat Soluble Antioxidant

“The greatest protective effect against iron-induced lipid peroxidation occurred when vitamin E, glutathione and NAC were combined. The combination reduced lipid peroxidation by 94%.” Milchak et al 2002

"Normally, when an antioxidant molecule accepts a free electron from an oxygen radical, it too becomes inactive. But vitamin E enjoys a special relationship with two other antioxidants, vitamin C and alpha lipoic acid, that allow it to continue protecting the skin.5 Both vitamin C and alpha lipoic acid have the ability to take away the extra electron from a used vitamin E molecule, effectively reactivating it.6 This capacity to recycle and restore its power makes vitamin E a prominent factor in the skin's first line of defense against free radicals."   Skin Protection Effects Of Vitamin E

Vitamin E is your body’s chief fat-soluble anti-oxidant. It protects your cell membranes and all fatty structures including your brain (See Brain Protection Protocol), which is 60% fat, and your central nervous system from oxidation. One of vitamin E’s key jobs is to keep your LDL from oxidizing and beginning the process that can form arterial plaque. Vitamin E is carried within the LDL packet and helps keep all the other fat soluble substances in the LDL packet as well as the LDL packet itself from oxidizing.

Vitamin E Functions

“By increasing the intake of vitamin E rich foods or vitamin E supplements it is possible to reduce the risk of many common disabling diseases and improve the quality of life, particularly in the elderly.”    Diplock 1997, Note when supplementing it is important to get all eight components of vitamin E

"Treatment of cultured muscle cells with alpha-tocopherol results in increased membrane repair to injured cells. Further experimentation confirmed the involvement of vitamin E's antioxidant function in its repair-promoting benefit as well as its ability to insert itself into the cell membrane due to its lipid solubility."   Nature Communication 2011 Dec 20

Vitamin E is a Complex of Vitamins

"A combination of different vitamin E forms could help prevent cognitive deterioration in advanced age, according to the results of a study from Sweden. Published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, the findings suggest that multiple components of the vitamin may help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. “Vitamin E is a family of eight natural components, but most studies related to Alzheimer’s disease investigate only one of these components—alpha tocopherol,"     Doctor Francesca Mangialasche

“There are actually eight forms of vitamin E: four tocopherols and four tocotrienols. They’re all antioxidants, and each has its own unique health properties. Not only is dl-alpha tocopherol not natural when you take it in that form, it’s also the tocopherol with the least heart benefit. And, when you take too much of it, you cause a decreased absorption of gamma-tocopherol. Gamma has been shown to have a lot of benefit for your heart and blood vessels. tocotrienols have benefits that tocopherols don’t have. And you can’t get any of them from synthetic vitamin E.”   Doctor Al Sears MD

The term vitamin E describes a family of eight antioxidants, four tocopherols, alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-, and four tocotrienols (See Tocotrienols Protocol) also alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-. Vitamin E serves as an antioxidant protecting the cell membrane from damage and also protects the fats in low-density lipoproteins from oxidation. Alpha-tocopherol is the most active in our bodies and is the only form usually found in most vitamin E supplements. I take a mixed tocopherol supplement which contains all four tocopherols. Be sure to get your tocotrienols in addition to the tocopherols. The best source of tocotrienols IMO is palm oil (See Palm Oil Protocol)

You CANNOT get enough vitamin E without supplementing

“You cannot get enough vitamin E in your diet to suppress heart attacks. That requires vitamin E supplements. However in our study more than 250 IU of vitamin E daily did not additionally cut heart disease. Our research shows you must take the vitamin E for about two years before its protection starts. The benefits of taking vitamin E far exceeded the benefits of lowering both cholesterol and lowering blood pressure. The risk of not taking vitamin E was about equal to the risk of smoking.” Meir J. Stampfer M. D. and Eric Rimm Sc. D. Harvard

IMO you must supplement or assure vitamin E. To go without assuring protection for your bodies fatty structures,  including those in your brain and LDL packets is insane.

Raw Seeds supply Vitamin E and it's Transport

Flax seed See Flax Seed Protocol and Sesame seed (See Sesame Seed Protocol) provides lignans which carry vitamin E throughout your body thus increasing your tissue vitamin E levels for a given ingestion of vitamin E. Most seeds are a good source of all eight vitamin E components. Eat your Seeds!

Always take your Vitamin E with Fat

Since Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin always eat it with a little good fat; after a meal is best.
