The Omega Essential Fatty Acids

"In an effort to ingest the essential fatty acids their bodies craved, the lab animals ate five times as much of the commercially processed fats as did the animals supplied with the electron rich active natural fats."   William Fischer, Note think a deficiency of the EFA can make you Fat?

The Omega Essential Fatty Acids include the omega 3 EFA (See Omega 3 EFA Protocol), the omega 6 EFA (See Omega 6 EFA Protocol) and the omega 9 Fat (See Omega 9 Fat Protocol). Omega EFAs are essential for your life but cannot be produced by your body. If you do not get a minimum amount of these essential fats from your diet you will die. More probably if you get the minimum but not much more your health will suffer as your body substitutes less useful fats for the Omega EFA you are not supplying to your body. This process of substitution of poorer fats for Essential Fats is a large cause of many modern “Diseases” which are in actuality nutrition problems.

   

Functions of Omega EFAs

Make sure you get plenty of Omega 3 EFA. Try not to get much more than twice the amount of GOOD Omega 6 EFAs (See Omega 6 EFA Protocol) as Omega 3 EFAs. The ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 should be in the range of 1:1 to 1:2. I say shoot for 1:1 you will probably fall short but if you achieve 1:2 you are doing good. Many health professionals stress getting both animal and plant based EFAs

This chart shows the increase in unsaturated fatty acids consumed in the USA in the last one hundred years. The major rise began just before WWII when the use of refined vegetable oils started to burgeon. The refined vegetable oils IMO are a major cause of both CVD and cancer.

“Recognizing the unique benefits of EPA and DHA and the serious consequences of a deficiency the US National Institutes of Health recently published Recommended Daily Intakes of essential fatty acids. They recommend a total daily intake of 650 mg of EPA and DHA, 2.22 g/day of Omega 3 EFA and 4.44 g/day of Omega 6 EFA.”   Note IMO this is LOW I try to get between 5 and 10 grams/day of each omega 3 and 6 on average

If you eat lots of Fast Food (See Fast Food Protocol) and similar junk food (See Junk Food Protocol), ugh, your ratio could be as bad as 1:40. This excess of mostly adulterated omega 6 EFAs is a source of many of our health problems such as heart attacks (See Cardiovascular Disease Protection Protocol), cancer (See Cancer Prevention Protocol), insulin resistance, asthma, lupus, schizophrenia, depression (See Depression Protection Protocol), postpartum depression, accelerated aging, stroke (See Stroke Protection Protocol), obesity (See Diet Protocol), diabetes (See Diabetes Type 2 Protection Protocol), osteoarthritis (See Osteoarthritis Protection Protocol), ADHD (See ADHD Protection Protocol), and Alzheimer's Disease (See Alzheimer’s Disease Protection Protocol), among others.

   

Omega 6 EFAs MUST be balanced with Omega 3 EFAs

“The best fats or oils rather, since they are liquid at room temperature, are those that contain the essential fatty acids so named because without them we die. Essential fatty acids are polyunsaturated and grouped into two families, the omega-6 EFAs and the omega-3 EFAs. Seemingly minor differences in their molecular structure make the two EFA families act very differently in the body. While the metabolic products of omega-6 acids promote inflammation, blood clotting, and tumor growth, the omega-3 acids act entirely opposite. Although we do need both omega-3s and omega-6s it is becoming increasingly clear that an excess of omega-6 fatty acids can have dire consequences. Many scientists believe that a major reason for the high incidence of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, premature aging, and some forms of cancer is the profound imbalance between our intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 6 EFAs are Pro-Inflammatory

Your body uses its inflammation process to heal itself. There are two parts to inflammation; the pro-inflammation phase and the inflammation clean up. Both are required for a healthy response to tissue destruction, foreign objects and trauma, The Omega 6 EFAs tend to produce more pro-inflammatory substances and the Omega 3 EFAs produce more inflammation calming substances.  This is one reason the two should be balanced. If you have 40 times as much inflammation provoking as inflammation calming building blocks you are in trouble.    

  

Sudden Cardiac Death and the Omega EFAs

Clearly the Omega EFAs to include DHA and EPA are key players in your heart function. Just another reason to make SURE you are getting sufficient amounts of this key nutrient.

     

Flax CAN BE a great source of EPA and DHA

"Flaxseed oil contains ALA.  To be converted into omega-3's (EPA and DHA), it must go through the enzyme Delta-6 Desaturase. Linoleic acid, which is found in a lot of high fat processed foods, is also metabolized through that enzyme, and so it competes for space with ALA. Linoleic acid is converted into compounds which promote inflammation. As the above research suggests some of the omega 3 ALA may be converted by your body to the vital omega 3 EFA EPA and DHA (See DHA & EPA Protocol). It certainly helps if you eat no more than two times your omega 3s as omega 6s.

There is some controversy about this but IMO it looks to be happening in the real world.

  

All Omega EFAs are easily Oxidized

High heat, light, and oxygen destroy EFAs, so when consuming foods for their EFA content, try to avoid cooked or heated forms. For example, raw nuts are a better source than roasted nuts if eaten by themselves. Don't use flaxseed oil for cooking, and never re-heat any type of oil.

I take an Omega EFA supplement (See Multi Omega Oil Protocol) that supplies a balanced mix of all three Omega EFAs plus DHA and EPA (See DHA and EPA Protocol) and GLA (See GLA Protocol).
