"Radishes contain raphanin (mainly sulfur),which is responsible for keeping
the production of thyroid and calcitonin (a peptide hormone) in normal balance.
With proper amounts of raphanin circulating in blood plasma, the thyroid won't
under or over produce these two hormones. This makes balancing the thyroid,
treating thyroid diseases as well as Graves disease a small miracle of the
tangy, little red radish. The sulfur amino acids in radish juice help break up
fat deposits in the liver as an added bonus."

“The health benefits of radishes are truly impressive. They are good for the liver and stomach, the kidneys and bladder, the lungs, the cardiovascular system, and the immune system. They purify the blood and eliminate waste, detoxify the body, and are an anti-congestive. They are used to treat and prevent cancer, jaundice, constipation, urinary tract and kidney infections, skin ailments, and more. For medicinal purposes radishes are eaten whole, juiced, or concentrated and used for supplements to treat a variety of illnesses and conditions. Oil from the seeds is also used for medicinal purposes.” Radish Health Benefits"The health benefits of radishes are truly impressive. "According to Organic Facts, the vitamin C, folic acid and anthocyanins in radishes and the radish's ability to detoxify are responsible for its reputation for treating cancer - particularly "...colon, kidney, intestinal, stomach and oral cancer." They also state, "...the isothiocyanates found in radishes have a major impact on the genetic pathways of cancerous cells. They alter the pathways so much, in fact, that they can cause apoptosis, cell death, thereby eliminating cancerous cells from reproducing." Radish Health Benefits
"[Radishes are] High in antioxidants, these have been shown to help reduce the spread of breast cancer cells. Additionally, a lab study with Japanese radish sprouts significantly lowered the incidence of mammary tumors."
"One Chinese herbal remedy still in use today consists of a dried power made from one radish and 99 peppercorns."
"The study found that isothiocyanates, a second chemical found in broccoli, can favorably modify genes. In other words, it might turn off genes that create cancer, and turn on genes that inhibit the disease. The authors said that you will likely see similar benefit from other cruciferous vegetables that contain isothiocyanates. These include Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, rocket or arugula, watercress, and horse radish. The goal of cancer management is prevention. I am 100% convinced that we can accomplish our goals to dramatically reduce cancer suffering by proper diet and reduction in toxins. And broccoli plays a major role in reaching that goal." "Horseradish: A recent article by
Mother Earth News states that scientific research
has shown various herbs, fruits and vegetables can be used as natural
antibiotics and contain health-enhancing compounds. Raw
horseradish has long been used for its
medicinal properties, with its healing components being thought to ease colds,
coughs, kidney stones and even urinary tract infections (UTIs), according to Dr.
John Christopher's Herbal Legacy. Horseradish
contains a volatile oil called sinigrin, which is broken down in the body to
produce allyl isothiocyanate – a powerful natural
antibiotic. There are various other extremely
active healing compounds contained within this spice that help clear congestion,
thin down mucus, reduce inflammation and fight infections. Its effectiveness at
treating various conditions has led to it being a commonly used
"Horseradish contains more than ten times the cancer fighting glucosinolates than broccoli so you do not need much to benefit." Doctor Mosbah Kushad, Note horseradish is also a superb fungus fighter as well as a natural diuretic
Radishes and radish juice can be quite beneficial for your thyroid and body. A sulphur compound found in the radish is a regulator of thyroxine and calcitonin (a peptide hormone). When enough of this sulphur compound is circulating in your bloodstream, your thyroid is less apt to over or under-produce these hormones. You want these radish goodies circulating CONTINUOUSLY in your blood. Eating a single radish a day, or more if you are worried about cancer or detoxification, would seem prudent.
The radish greens are also quite salubrious and should be eaten on the day of purchase as they go bad quickly.
This simple little pink food should be in EVERY salad IMO.
The Horseradish can be considered IMO a very large radish in many respects with a few unique benefits thrown in to boot. Horseradish sure packs a pungent punch so you must adjust the amount.
Caution: Since radishes are goitergens which NORMALLY depress the thyroid, IMO watch this one carefully if it does not seem to be working there are MANY other methods to improve your thyroid function. Cooking the radish will lessen its goitergenic properties and SHOULD be done IMO if required.
