Vitamin B6 Protocol

     

“The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (May, 2008) published a study of nearly 8,000 people showing that B6 inadequacy is common throughout the United States.”Across the study population," the authors said, "we noticed participants with inadequate vitamin B6 status even though they reported consuming more than the Recommended Daily Allowance of vitamin B6, which is less than 2 milligrams per day." Three out of four women using oral contraceptives are vitamin B6 deficient, unless they also take vitamin B6 supplements. Smokers and the elderly are also especially likely to be at risk. Remarkably, even among people who take B6 supplements, one in ten is still B6 deficient.” Orthomolecular Medicine News Service, October 21, 2008

"A new study says that even if you get the RDA of critical vitamin B6 (under 2 mg), you still could be deficient. The authors conclude that 3 mg to 4.9 mg daily should be the accepted RDA. But they acknowledge that even at that level, many still will be deficient. Actually, it will take at least 100 mg of vitamin B6 daily to protect your health as you age. That tells you just how low the RDA is. There's no way to know what your blood levels of vitamin B6 are without a blood test. Regardless, it's far easier — and cheaper — to take a supplement than get screened.”    Doctor Robert Rowen MD  Am J Clin Nutr, 2008; 87(5).

"You can get B6 from many meats, fish, beans and peanut butter, and it's entirely possible to get up to 2.9 milligrams daily from food alone. But doing so might be a chore -- if you want the make sure you're getting enough each day, choose a multivitamin with some extra B6 or work in a supplement.”   Doctor William Douglass MD

"Researchers have found that seniors with the highest levels of two critical B vitamins are also the least likely to battle depression. The same ones I've been telling you about for years: B6 and B12, which come naturally from a diet high in meats and fish. Researchers looked at data on some 3,500 seniors in Chicago, and found that depression risk dropped by 2 percent for every 10-milligram increase in vitamin B6 and 10-microgram increase in B12. I'll tell you what's really going on here. Most people simply don't get large enough amounts of these nutrients from food to make a difference. You can change that, starting tonight, by putting liver on the menu. It's packed with B12, and is a pretty good source of B6 too. Forget two birds with one stone -- you want two livers a week.”   Doctor William Douglass MD

     

Vitamin B6 is required for

"A painful complication that often comes with  a deficiency of vitamin B6 is premenstrual syndrome, which could also serve to indicate why certain women are unable to conceive."   James Scheer

  • Amino acid metabolism including converting essential to non-essential

  • Cell formation

  • Processing Carbs

  • Menstrual Cycle Function

  • Nervous System

  • Detoxification

  • Helping to convert homocysteine (See Homocysteine Protocol) to cysteine

  • Many Other Functions

   

Vitamin B6 must be obtained from your diet because humans cannot synthesize it. Vitamin B6 is involved in more than 100 enzymatic reactions and thus you cannot live without it. Severe deficiency of vitamin B6 may be uncommon but a large study found higher plasma levels of B6 were associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease probably because low vitamin B6 can lead to increased blood homocysteine (See Homocysteine Protocol)  levels. Increased dietary protein results in an increased requirement for vitamin B6 in part because the resulting cysteine cycle produces more homocysteine.

  

Synthetic vitamins are NOT COMPLETE Vitamin COMPLEXES

“This will be a short chapter, but after you're finished with it, you will know more about vitamins than 95% of clinical nutritionists, doctors, supplement sales force, or bodybuilders.   If that sounds arrogant or overstated, it really isn't my fault. I'm just a messenger; a purveyor of information. Either I'm right or the 95% are right; can't be both. Without further ado, here's the kernel: ascorbic acid is not vitamin C.   Alpha tocopherol is not vitamin E.   Retinoic acid is not vitamin A.   And so on through the other vitamins.   Vast sums of money have been expended to make these myths part of Conventional Wisdom.   If you have several college degrees and all this is news to you, don't feel bad. Unless you think your education ended at Commencement.”  Doctor Tim O'Shea

    

Raw foods provide the best source of B6 because processing and cooking can cause as much as 80% of the B6 to be lost.

    

Always get your Vitamin B Complex with any individual B Vitamin

"The B vitamins are all inter-dependant. Each one affects the absorption, metabolism and excretion of the other B vitamins." Doctor Anthony Cichoke

First of course always try to get ALL your B complex vitamins in FOOD. RAW Green leafy vegetables are IMO the best way.

Always also assure the complete B complex vitamins when you take an individual B vitamin. This is because many of the B vitamins require one or more of the other B vitamins to be utilized by your body so a shortage of any B vitamin can affect all B vitamins. I try to assure my  B complex most days together with 1600 micro grams of Folic Folic Acid and 5 mg of Biotin . This is insurance, VERY cheap insurance.  

The best way to do this is a very large salad with lots of raw GREEN LEAFY vegetables
