DHA and EPA Protocol

“A higher DHA level obtained prenatally from the mother was associated with longer gestation, better vision at six months and better mental and psychomotor development at 11 months.” Jacobson et al

“In the Zutphen Elderly Study, which involved 210 men aged 70-89 years a linear relation was found between the estimated intake of DHA and EPA and prevention of cognitive decline. A DHA+EPA intake of approximately 380 mg per day (less than an ounce of Chinook salmon) seemed to prevent cognitive decline.”  Van Gelder BM, Tijhuis M, et al.

“Low concentrations of EPA and DHA result in an increased risk of death from all causes and accelerated cognitive decline. However, short-term intervention with EPA and DHA in the healthy elderly had no effect on mental well-being, suggesting that dietary habits that include a higher intake of omega 3’s may bring certain health benefits that short-term supplementation cannot provide.” American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

“Supplementation with lutein an antioxidant and DHA an omega 3 EFA promotes beneficial changes in the eye that may help prevent AMD.”  Johnson EJ et al Am J Clinical Nutrition 2008 May

“For optimal pain relief the correct balance of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids should be obtained; take 1000 mg of DHA and 400 mg of EPA from the omega 3 family and 900 mg of GLA from the omega 6 family.” Life Extension

“An adequate intake of DHA and EPA is particularly important during pregnancy and lactation. During this time the mother must supply all the baby's needs for DHA and EPA because it is unable to synthesize these essential fatty acids itself. DHA makes up 15 to 20% of the cerebral cortex and 30 to 60% of the retina so it is absolutely necessary for normal development of the fetus and baby. There is some evidence that an insufficient intake of omega-3 fatty acids may increase the risk of premature birth and an abnormally low birth weight. There is also emerging evidence that low levels of omega-3 acids are associated with hyperactivity in children. The constant drain on a mother's DHA reserves can easily lead to a deficiency and some researchers believe that preeclampsia (pregnancy-related high blood pressure) and postpartum depression could be linked to a DHA deficiency. Experts recommend that women get at least 500-600 mg of DHA every day during pregnancy and lactation. The easiest way to ensure this intake is to take a good fish oil supplement daily.” Hans R. Larsen, MSc ChE

“The recommended daily intake of EPA plus DHA is about 650 mg rising to 1000 mg/day during pregnancy and lactation. Clinical trials have used anywhere from 1 g/day to 10 g/day, but little additional benefit has been observed at levels above 5 g/day of EPA and DHA combined. The benefits of therapeutic supplementation may become evident in a few weeks when blood parameters (triglycerides, fibrinogen) are involved, but may take 3 months or longer to materialize in degenerative diseases like atherosclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.” Hans R. Larsen, MSc ChE

“The fatty acids in fish oil, EPA and DHA dramatically improve functional ability and diminish pain in a myriad of diseases, including psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, lupus, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.” McCarthy 1992

"Higher intakes of omega-3 fatty acids and oily fish may reduce the number of occasions that women suffer depressive symptoms by about 30%, according to a new study. Women with the highest intake of oily fish reduced their number of depressive moments by 25%, while a high intake of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) reduced this number by 29%."  Feinberg School of Medicine Chicago,  University of North Carolina CH. University of California, SF.

"Omega 3 fats DHA and EPA are essential for brain function. In fact 60 percent of the brain consists of DHA. A lack of these fats is strongly associated with ADHD as well as eczema and immune deficiency." Doctor Mark Hyman MD

"Researchers from the University of Newcastle in New South Wales report that levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation reported to be an independent predictor of cardiovascular-related events, are inversely related to blood levels of DHA and EPA."  Swanson Vitamins, Note less DHA more inflammation

“In an analysis of over 160 studies the omega 3 EFAs DHA and EPA along with ALA and folic acid emerged as significant dietary compounds to enhance learning and memory and prevent mental disorders.” Life Extension

These results are the first to show that intake of EPA plus DHA for 26 weeks can alter the gene expression… to a more anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic status.”  M. Bouwens, O. et al.  American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Volume 90, pages 415-424. June 2009

"Women with the highest red blood cell levels of EPA had a remarkable 73% decreased risk of breast cancer compared to those with the lowers levels."  Life Extension, Note WOW EPA is an omega 3 fatty acid

“Diets that fail to provide enough of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) may negatively affect the nervous system. The finding could impact the understanding of information-processing deficits that occur in schizophrenia, bipolar disease, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Huntington's disease and other nervous system disorders.”     Behavioral Neuroscience

"High levels of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA were associated with lower levels of triglycerides, as well as higher levels of HDL cholesterol, according to data from 357 Yup’ik Eskimos published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Higher levels of the fatty acids were also associated with decreased levels of markers of inflammation, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), which is produced in the liver and is a known marker for inflammation. Increased levels of CRP are a good predictor for the onset of both type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Increasing EPA and DHA intakes to amounts well above those consumed by the general U.S. population may have strong beneficial effects on chronic disease risk, the researchers concluded.”    High Intakes of Omega-3s Linked to Big Health Benefits

"This is good news for those looking to stop cancer, We now know that DHA plays both offense and defense when it comes to protecting our health. Its ability to help prevent numerous diseases is well documented, but now we see that DHA or one of its byproducts might serve as the starting point for a new class of anticancer drugs."    Gerald Weissmann, MD, DHA and Cancer, Note forget waiting for the DRUGS take the DHA NOW

"The puzzle of the big brain change involved scientists putting together pieces that at first look had no relation. The first piece of the puzzle involved discovering early human populations that demonstrated greater intelligence. They found evidence in the East African Rift Valley and on the southern Cape of South Africa. The second piece of the puzzle was the discovery that docosahexaenoic acid, (DHA), was a large contributor to brain growth. The third piece was the discovery that DHA was found in seafood. When scientists put all the pieces together they found that the early humans who lived near water sources and ate seafood experienced the big brain change!”    DHA and your progenitor's Brain

"Animal based omega-3 fats contain two fatty acids crucial to your health, DHA and EPA. These two fatty acids, not ALA, are pivotal in preventing heart disease, cancer, and many other diseases. It is also important to realize that over 50 percent of your brain is is made up of DHA Low DHA levels have been linked to depression, schizophrenia, memory loss, and a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's. In fact, the results of three studies published in 2008 showed that low concentrations of EPA and DHA resulted in an increased risk of death from ALL causes and accelerated cognitive decline. Researchers are now also linking inadequate intake of these omega-3 fats in pregnant women to premature birth and low birth weight, and to hyperactivity in children.”   Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

"EPA and DHA provide virtually unrivalled heart health defense. They can prevent and even reverse cardiovascular disease by increasing levels of artery-cleaning HDL in the blood. They reduce harmful triglycerides and very low density lipoproteins and prevent sudden cardiac death."   Life Extension

"In the Journal of Neuroscience, Oregon Health and Science University researchers report a brain benefit for the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in rhesus macaques.* The study is the first to utilize functional brain magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) to observe the interaction of multiple brain networks in live monkeys. The research involved rhesus macaques between the ages of 17 and 19 who had been given life-long diets that were low or high in DHA. Damien Fair, PA-C, PhD, and his colleagues found stronger connectivity of early visual pathways in the brains of monkeys given high-DHA diets as well as increased connections within brain networks similar to those found in humans, including those related to cognition and higher-level processing."   Primate Brains Show Omega-3 Benefit

DHA, docosahexaenoic acid and EPA, eicosapentaenoic acids are Omega 3 EFAs, (See Omega 3 EFA Protocol) found most plentifully in the skin and fat of cold-water fish. Your body may be able to convert Omega 3 EFAs to DHA and EPA on its own but IMO it is best not to rely on this process and assume you need to get at least some DHA and EPA directly in your diet. Low DHA/EPA levels has been established as an independent risk for heart attacks.

New research shows many people can efficiently convert the omega 3 EFAs to the required EFAs EPA and DHA. However enzyme (See Enzymes Protocol) deficiencies are usually present in the people of Inuit, Scandinavian, Northern European, and seacoast ancestry. They lack the ability to convert omega 3 EFA into EPA and DHA.

DHA and EPA are vital essential fatty acids required for MANY of your body’s functions especially your brain (See Brain Protection Protocol) and central nervous system. Ten percent of the dry weight of your brain is DHA.

Recent studies have also indicated that low levels of DHA contribute to many major physical and psychological disorders such as ADHD, depression, aggression, Alzheimer's disease, Schizophrenia, memory loss and Multiple Sclerosis. In a landmark study published in the American Journal of Nutrition, researchers showed that breast-fed infants whose mothers (See Pregnancy Protection Protocol) who took 200 mg of DHA per day outperformed DHA-deficient infants at every level. They had better hand-eye coordination, as well as enhanced “gross motor skills” like standing up, walking, going up and down stairs, and keeping their balance.

DHA is a Brain Food

"DHA is a brain food. Studies show that brain tissue contains the highest concentration of DHA in the body, which indicates its value for brain function.2 Within the brain itself, regions most closely related to memory show the greatest DHA concentrations.3-6 Those with a DHA deficiency often show cognitive deficiencies and an increased risk for Alzheimer's.7,8 Children with high levels of DHA often perform better on tests.9 As a key fatty acid, DHA plays critical roles throughout the body and is a component of the brain's cerebral cortex, the retina, and human sperm."    Life Extension

"Omega 3 fats DHA and EPA are essential for brain function. In fact 60 percent of the brain consists of DHA. A lack of these fats is strongly associated with ADHD as well as eczema and immune deficiency."   Doctor Mark Hyman MD

"Parkinson's disease starts when genetic variants cause proteins to misfold in your sensitive neurons. New research shows you can stop these proteins from misfolding. The researchers in this study concentrated on a cell model with a mutation of a particular gene. This resulted in misfolding of the protein. They found that the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) protects the cells from the defect. Interestingly, the same research team had previously found that DHA induces the naturally occurring molecule neuroprotecting D1. This molecule promotes brain cell survival. It is capable of rescuing dying cells with the folding mutation. That means this omega-3 fat may protect your brain cells from abnormal mutations and from Parkinson's.”   Doctor Robert Rowen MD

Your brain is composed of DHA and EPA among other good fats and other goodies. Please make sure you get plenty of these omega 3 EFAs or your brain will suffer.

Vegetarians Dangerously Deficient in DHA and EPA

"Fish do not make DHA. Predatory ocean fish, our best animal source of omega-3 fatty acids, consume smaller fish and crustaceans.42,43 Those animals, in turn, feed on algae. And algae use specialized enzymes, powered by solar energy, to produce the DHA (and EPA) that we need in order to remain healthy. As a result, all of the DHA we consume originates with tiny one-celled algal organisms."    Life Extension

"A new technique for extracting DHA directly from algae makes DHA supplementation more widely available. Algal-derived DHA oil is equivalent to that derived from fish oil in terms of its bioavailability and impact on the human body."   Life Extension

If you are a vegetarian not eating fish or fish oil please look to get some DHA and EPA from the new Algae-derived DHA Oil.

DHA and EPA Benefits

"DHA and EPA as part of a complete fish oil like omega supplement at the rate of 2,000 mg to 4,000 mg/day in as little as three weeks can reverse many key risks for CVD."   Life Extension

"Cod liver oil and foods like liver and egg yolks supply this [DHA] nutrient to the developing fetus, to nursing infants and to growing children. Saturated fats help the body put the DHA in the tissues where it belongs."   Sally Fallon

"Low fish intake and low blood DHA levels correlate strongly with increased risk of cognitive impairment and especially Alzheimer's.7 Animal studies show learning and memory deficits under conditions of DHA deficiency; studies of the animals' brains demonstrate inflammatory and oxidative damage to neurons.7,8 All of these deleterious effects resolve when adequate DHA intake resumes."   Life Extension

Direct Sources of DHA and EPA

"Fish is brain food."

"People with low DHA levels stand to gain the most from supplementation using algae-based DHA; one study found a 4 to 5-fold increase in blood levels following supplementation in cystic fibrosis patients, who often have imbalances in their fatty acid content.47"   Life Extension

I consume all these DHA and EPA sources often.

Here is a good source of DHA and EPA

Here is a product (See Multi Omega Oil Protocol) that combines DHA and EPA with other essential oils.
