Edema Protection and Reversal Protocol

“Bromelain is a crude extract from the pineapple that contains, among other components, various closely related proteinases, demonstrating, in vitro and in vivo, antiedematous, antiinflammatory, antithrombotic and fibrinolytic activities. The active factors involved are biochemically characterized only in part. Due to its efficacy after oral administration, its safety and lack of undesired side effects, bromelain has earned growing acceptance and compliance among patients.”   Bromelain: biochemistry, pharmacology and medical use

"Aspirin has been linked to lung complications including pulmonary edema, an abnormal build up of fluid in your lungs, when taken in excess.”   Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

“For colds and the flu avoid over-the-counter pain-relief medications, as research suggests that taking aspirin or Tylenol (acetaminophen) may actually suppress your body's ability to produce antibodies to destroy the cold virus. Aspirin has also been linked to lung complications including pulmonary edema, an abnormal build up of fluid in your lungs, when taken in excess. Only use these medications when absolutely necessary, such as if you have a temperature greater than 105 degrees F (40.5 degrees C), severe muscle aches or weakness.”   Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

“In our initial work we examined the consequences of the loss of BBB integrity during zinc deficiency. First, we noted significantly increased water content, or edema, of the brain as a result of zinc deficiency. Second, we observed increased protein oxidation within the brain. And third, we documented significant changes in brain energy metabolism. These observations led us to propose that these events may be pivotal in the development and pathogenesis of many brain disorders.” Mark A. Levy, PhD & Tammy M. Bray, PhD   Note BBB is blood brain barrier

"In addition to reports in clinical trials, the following adverse events have been identified ... [allergic edema of the mouth] during postapproval use of Flulaval...  Note the "postapproval" period is the final phase of clinical trials using YOU as a guinea pig. Half of all drugs FAIL in "postapproval" and are withdrawn from the market because they did TOO MUCH DAMAGE to the public and YOU. IMO and the opinion of many doctors NEVER take a drug that has been on the market less than 7 years. IMO NEVER take a drug unless you have thoroughly researched it and determined it is a GOOD RISK for  you. Garbage like the "flu shot" is NEVER right for you.

"Horse Chestnut: How does it work? Horse chestnut contains a substance that thins the blood. It also makes it harder for fluid to leak out of veins and capillaries and weakly promotes fluid loss through the urine to help prevent water retention (edema)."   Web MD

“One of the most widely used nutraceutical approaches for varicose veins is horse chestnut seed extract (Aesculus hippocastanum). Horse chestnut seed extract is widely used in Europe for chronic venous insufficiency. Horse chestnut seed extract has demonstrated impressive efficacy in relieving the symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, effectively reducing leg volume, alleviating leg pain, improving edema, and averting itching.18 Horse chestnut has been reported to increase blood circulation by face or legs can also be successful as the newer equipment is more specific to the vein and spares the surrounding tissues.”   Life Extension

"As blood cleansers, these enzymes combat chronic inflammation, which left unchecked can lead to everything from autoimmune diseases, to cardiovascular disease and even cancer. Enzymes reduce inflammation in your body by: Breaking down foreign proteins in the blood, removing fibrin a clotting material that can prolong inflammation and reducing edema in the inflamed regions. It follows, then, that any disease caused by inflammation—which is practically every chronic disease we face today—can be benefited by increased levels of functional enzymes in your blood.”   Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

“After this new processed diet had become the standard for a generation, suddenly in the 1940s people start dying of heart complications. Year by year the percentages increase, and new terms come into the general vocabulary: arrhythmia, heart murmurs, congestive heart disease, pulmonary edema, shunts, pacemaker, EKG, atherosclerosis, angiogram, and of course, bypass. Gradually people accept these de-evolutionizing terms as part of the normal human condition rather than what they really are - marketing tools. And watersheds of declining health.” The Doctor Within

“Cholesterol is the precursor to all the hormones produced in the adrenal cortex including glucocorticoids, which regulate blood sugar levels, and mineralocorticoids, which regulate mineral balance. Corticoids are the cholesterol-based adrenal hormones that the body uses in response to stress of various types; it promotes healing and balances the tendency to inflammation. The adrenal cortex also produces sex hormones, including testosterone, estrogen and progesterone, out of cholesterol. Thus, low cholesterol--whether due to an innate error of metabolism or induced by cholesterol-lowering diets and drugs--can be expected to disrupt the production of adrenal hormones and lead to blood sugar problems, edema, mineral deficiencies, chronic inflammation, difficulty in healing, allergies, asthma, reduced libido, infertility and various reproductive problems.”  Sally Fallon and Mary G. Enig, PhD

“OPC reduces edema and swelling which may be important in fighting HBP, congestive heart failure and sports injuries involving swelling.” Jean Carper, Note OPC is found in Grape Seed Extract as well as the more expensive Pycnogenol

"Continued long enough, this cellular energy starvation is a major contributor to congestive heart failure (CHF), in which heart muscle can't "squeeze" hard enough to move blood efficiently.16 The result is that fluid accumulates in tissues throughout the body as a result of poor cardiac "squeeze" (technically called contractility). The end result is progressive exercise intolerance, increasing difficulty breathing, and fluid retention. In the extreme, congestive heart failure can result in the deadly accumulation of fluid in the lungs—known as pulmonary edema—that is the ultimate cause of death for many victims of heart disease."   Restoring Cellular Energy Metabolism

"Edema is swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in your body's tissues. Although edema can affect any part of your body, it's most commonly noticed in the hands, arms, feet, ankles and legs. Edema can be the result of medication, pregnancy or an underlying disease — often heart failure, kidney disease or cirrhosis of the liver. Taking medication to remove excess fluid and reducing the amount of salt in your food often relieves edema. When edema is a sign of an underlying disease, the disease itself requires separate treatment."   Mayo clinic Edema

"Signs and symptoms of edema include: Swelling or puffiness of the tissue directly under your skin, Stretched or shiny skin, Skin that retains a dimple after being pressed for several seconds, Increased abdominal size. When to see a doctor Make an appointment to see your doctor if you have swelling, stretched or shiny skin, or skin that retains a dimple after being pressed. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience: Shortness of breath, Difficulty breathing, Chest pain. These symptoms can be a sign of pulmonary edema, which requires prompt treatment..If you've been sitting for a prolonged period, such as on a long flight, and you develop swelling and pain in a leg that won't go away, call your doctor. Persistent leg pain and swelling can be a sign of a blood clot deep in your veins (deep vein thrombosis, or DVT)."   Mayo clinic Edema

This protocol is designed to prevent and reverse ACUTE EDEMA; for any serious problems with edema as a symptom of course see a good Naturopathic Doctor. I have experienced acute edema off and on in my decades and it is one of the easiest problems to figure out and successfully self treat.

Many times lower leg and other edema is as simple as sitting on your butt for too long a time. Get up and walk at least every hour. Many of us  have too much PROCESSED salt in our diets and MANY drugs to include aspirin can produce edema. Check the many possible sources of edema and eliminate them one by one to find the exact source of your edema. Of course I do not care to identify the exact source; I shape up my living with the object of eliminating all my edema AND any future possible edema.

With edema the results are simple to SEE; usually in your legs.

Salt and Edema

"One-third to one-half of the people with hypertension are significantly benefited by lowering salt intake."   Life Extension   Note this also holds for edema IMO

"The amount of salt in the typical American diet greatly exceeds what is derived from a natural diet. In this respect the level of sodium chloride intake is pharmacological with pronounced but insidious side effects."   Life Extension

"The INTERSALT trial of over 10,000 people in 32 countries found those with the lowest BP had the highest potassium levels and those with the highest BP had the lowest potassium levels."   Prevention

BUT be Careful

Since the cause is not known, it is medically given a term called essential hypertension. In essence, we do not know the cause but are more than willing to treat the symptoms. More appropriately, high blood pressure should be considered a symptom, while the actual disease state could very well be sub-clinical dehydration. High blood pressure in such instances could be effectively cured with simply increasing water and [Sea} salt intake.” Doctor Michael Lam MD

"Some recent European research has concluded that an extra pinch or two of salt per day can help the elderly to stay healthy - and that fully 10% of older folks suffer from a sodium DEFICIENCY! This lack of sufficient daily salt can cause nervousness, hallucinations, muscle cramps, and even urinary incontinence.”    Doctor William Douglass MD

“You cannot compare the processed salt used in processed foods with natural, unrefined salt. So while I agree that steering clear of processed foods will help you reduce your stroke risk and improve your health in general, it's important to understand that you don't have to avoid ALL salt, just the processed kind (think regular table salt).”   Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

I tend to eat too much sea salt with my beloved avocados which I will often overindulge. IMO you will not eat too many (three or four/day is probably fine) of the super salubrious avocados BUT if you salt them you may be eating too much salt. Of course four of the fatty avocados a day will pack on the pounds. LOL

I also tend to eat too much salt after I come off a sweaty summer hike where I can burn many grams of salt a day sweating. So I have to watch my salt especially when I notice my ankles swelling.

HBP can be caused by TOO LOW a salt level and/or too low a potassium level. SEA SALT please. Edema in your ankles can be a clue you have too high a salt level. IMO cut ALL salt  until all your edema is gone then keep your SEA SALT between 500 mg and 1,000 mg a day until you have your BP where you want it.

The bottom line is salt may be part of your problem with edema OR it may not; if your salt is NOT sea salt it IS part of your problem. YOU have test and decide for YOURSELF. Good health is in large part becoming detective. Do it. Your discovering your optimal intake of SEA salt is very important for many aspects of your health.

See the salt discussion on the HBP_1 Page

Potassium Deficiency   this coupled with too much sodium can cause edema and HBP

Inflammation and Edema

"What you eat and how much you exercise are the most important factors governing inflammation." Doctor Mark Hyman MD

“Low level inflammation is involved with virtually every undesirable consequence of aging.” Life Extension

“Several human diseases are inflammatory in nature, including asthma, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, polymyalgia rheumatica, tendonitis, bursitis, laryngitis, gingivitis, gastritis, otitis, celiac disease (gluten intolerance), diverticulitis (infection of the diverticula in the colon), and inflammatory bowel disease. Additionally, a number of chronic diseases have inflammatory components, such as atherosclerosis, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and perhaps even Alzheimer's disease.” Victoria J. Drake, PhD

“Vitamin D reverses inflammatory changes associated with age-related memory impairment.” Biochem Soc Trans. 2005 Aug;33(Pt 4):573-7.

“Reducing dietary vegetable oils and increasing the omega-3 fats EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) by consuming fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines can benefit individuals experiencing chronic inflammatory conditions.” Adam O et al

"It is now apparent that many traditional spices in addition to adding interest to our food can provide vital anti-inflammatory and antioxidant function that is having an impact on how we think about chronic illness and aging."    Aggarwal et al

"Far from being an "inevitable" consequence of aging, we now understand that cognitive decline and memory deficits are the predictable results of a lifetime of oxidative and inflammatory injury that damages brain cells' ability to communicate with each other." Life Extension

"Fat cells, especially the “white adipose tissue” found in abdominal fat, are a massive factory for inflammatory signaling molecules.6-8 The steady outpouring of these molecules from belly fat cells results in low-grade body-wide inflammation,9,10 which is a primary instigator of chronic “age-related” disorders.11,12 Pro-inflammatory molecules emitted from fat cells interfere with normal insulin function, which results in the state known as insulin resistance.6 Resistance to insulin increases the amount of glucose in the blood, where it further damages tissues and eventually contributes to still greater problems managing weight."    Stop the Fat Cycle

Sugar is Horribly Inflammatory

http://www.sott.net/image/image/s6/138820/full/522726_353338864774791_1978924.jpg

Revealing the connection between sugar and cancer...again

"Large numbers of people, perhaps even the majority of the population, are adversely affected by gluten on some level. Grains and sugars are inherently pro-inflammatory and will worsen any condition that has chronic inflammation at its root -- and not just inflammation in your gut, but anywhere in your body. In fact, if you want to avoid heart disease, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes or even cancer, you will want to severely limit your grain consumption, or avoid grains entirely.”    Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

Edema is a normal part of the initial inflammation process. Make sure your, presumably acute, edema is not instead part of a low level CHRONIC inflammation. If you cannot figure this out please get good naturopathic medical help as this potentially serious condition can age your body at a rapid pace.

Please visit the inflammation Protocol to identify many possible sources of edema and MANY strategies for preventing and remediating all sorts of edema and potential edema.
