Hip Protocol

“Sodium fluoride added to drinking water is one of a number of substances that is harmful to our bones. It causes an apparent increase in bone mass, but the bone structure is abnormal and weak. Running can Vastly help your Hips

Your hips, as do all bones, depend on weight bearing exercise for strength. Running even as little as a few hundred or so yards every week can supply some of this weight bearing stress.

I don’t run far anymore but I feel you should run a few hundred yards at least once in a while. This has many advantages. It stresses and thus strengthens and protects (See Use it or Lose it Protocol) your bones, muscles, tendons, joints and many other body parts. Running will vigorously pump synovial fluid thru your joints, especially in your foot, knee and hip and may thus help hold off the ravages of arthritis. If you do lot of hiking you can at times speed up your pace to four or five miles per hour and break into a jog for awhile.

    

Osteoarthritis and Hip Problems

It is my experience that arthritis of the hip is often a problem of systemic arthritis. So you must normally solve you generalized arthritis problem. This can take some doing. The very first thing  you need to do IMO is to make sure your hip muscles are well developed and are not your real hip problem.

Hip Exercises

I have found the cause of a lot of my hip and lower back pain is over tight hamstring muscles. I have had this problem all my life so I always start with hamstring stretches. When I can get to where I can touch my toes fairly easily I know my hamstrings are somewhat loose. Next I have found that a hip adduction muscle exercise relieves my occasional hip pain the best and the best one is lying down on the ground. Once you learn these few simple exercises it only takes ten or so minutes to do them all. You may need a few different exercises for your situation. Youtube will give you lots of choices.

Ease Into All Exercise

If your hip is real bad simple low load stretching exercises may be a good warm up or all the exercise you can do to start. A gentle walking program is all you may be able to handle at first. Once you get your walking up to a few miles you will be ready for more stressful exercises. Start low, go slow.

No Surgery or Drugs

Total Hip Replacement

"Total hip replacements are performed most commonly because of progressively worsening of severe arthritis in the hip joint. The most common type of arthritis leading to total hip replacement is arthritis of the hip joint. This type of arthritis is generally seen with  aging, congenital abnormality of the hip joint, or prior trauma to the hip joint. Other conditions leading to total hip replacement include bony fractures of the hip joint, rheumatoid arthritis, and death (aseptic necrosis, or avascular necrosis) of the hip bone. Hip bone necrosis can be caused by fracture of the hip, drugs (such as chronic use of prednisone and prednisolone), alcoholism, and systemic diseases."   Total Hip Replacement

There are many problems with the above common view of total hip replacement. IMO almost all of the above causes are almost totally PREVENTABLE. Please prevent ever getting into the position of having to make this Hobson's "choice".

Stay on Top of Your Hips

Please do not go under the Hip Replacement knife or take the very toxic and pernicious steroids or other dangerous drugs, at least until you give an exercise and restoring bone health program a year, with perhaps the help of a professional trainer and/or a good naturopathic sports doctor. Hip Replacement surgery often makes a bad situation worse and steroids taken for more than a few days can EAT your tissues.

A bum hip is a lifetime curse and IMO a few miles/day walking with a little jogging and attention to your bone health is not bad prophylactic insurance or treatment.
