Melatonin Protocol

IMO it’s important to try and increase your melatonin production after the age of 40 or so as your body has MANY uses for melatonin including anti-cancer. Supplement if you must.

“Obviously, melatonin’s ability to protect DNA from oxidative damage has implications for many types of cancer, including leukemia, considering that DNA damage due to free radicals is believed to be the initial oncostatic event in a majority of human cancers.”  Cerutti et al., 1994

“Melatonin is an antioxidant shown to be very effective in reducing oxidative damage to the central nervous system. Melatonin stimulates several antioxidant enzymes including glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase.” Reiter et al

“In addition to cancer, free radical damage to the central nervous system is a significant component of a variety of neurodegenerative diseases of the aged including Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinsonism. In experimental animal models of both of these conditions, melatonin has proven highly effective in forestalling their onset, and reducing their severity.”  Reiter et al., 2001

“Melatonin concentration in serum increased significantly after music therapy and was found to increase further at 6 weeks follow up.” Kumar et al

“People with calcified pineal glands were four times as likely to experience day time tiredness and almost twice as likely to experience sleep problems as those with normal pineal glands.” Swietosalwski

“A dietary lack of tryptophan may make deficiencies of serotonin and melatonin common.” Maurizi

"Studies have shown melatonin can provide many potential health benefits that would be important to people as they age, including helping to protect the vascular system and improving sleep. Cherries are one of the few known, researched sources of melatonin. As people look for natural ways to promote longevity, including cherries in their daily diet may be helpful." Russel J. Reiter, Ph.D, nutrition researcher University of Texas Health Science Center

“The nighttime rise in melatonin production is one way the body cleans itself of glycated proteins.” Yin 2000

“A common cause for insomnia in people over the age of 35 to 40 is deficiency of the hormone melatonin. Melatonin supplementation is a safe and effective sleep enhancing therapy.” Haimov et al 1997

“Many people find 300 mcg of melatonin is an ideal sleep inducer, others take 3 – 6 mg of melatonin before bedtime to solve their sleep problems. Too much melatonin can interfere with sleep in some persons so the lowest effective dose of melatonin needed to get to sleep and stay asleep is often the best course of action.” Life Extension

"If you focus on just a few hormones insulin, thyroid, sex hormones, melatonin, growth and cortisol all the rest come into balance." Doctor Mark Hyman

Exposing Yourself to Light at Night Shuts Down Your Melatonin and Raises Your Cancer Risk

Melatonin

http://www.benbest.com/nutrceut/mela_age.jpg

Melatonin by Ben Best

"Because melatonin production reduces with age,10-14 experts believe that its decline contributes to both the aging process and a generalized deterioration of health.5,15-17 Years ago, scientists could only speculate at the underlying mechanisms behind melatonin's anti-aging properties. A growing body of evidence reveals how melatonin is able to play such a major role in the combating aging process.18-20"   Beyond Sleep: 7 Ways Melatonin Attacks Aging Factors

"As soon as this gland [Pineal] senses that we are past our reproductive age 45, it begins to produce far lower levels of melatonin. This in effect signals all our other systems that it is time to breakdown and the aging process begins."   Doctor Ronald Klatz, Note do you want to give it up at 45? then you best get to know melatonin

Melatonin is an antioxidant (See Antioxidant Protocol) anti-inflammatory hormone your body uses for many functions. Melatonin production begins an hour or two before you fall asleep. A light source can kill ALL Melatonin production and result in your waking up rather abruptly. Make sure you have no light sources when you are sleeping. Even a night-light or weak diode light seems to awaken me.

Daytime levels of melatonin are low, nighttime levels may be ten times greater. Your Melatonin production usually falls off as you age. I found that my Melatonin production has been increased by increasing my HGH release (See HGH Protocol).  IMO it’s important to try and increase your melatonin production after the age of 40 or so as your body has MANY uses for melatonin including anti-cancer. Melatonin may be your bodies most powerful anti-glycation agent.

Cancer and Melatonin

“Obviously, melatonin’s ability to protect DNA from oxidative damage has implications for many types of cancer, including leukemia, considering that DNA damage due to free radicals is believed to be the initial oncostatic event in a majority of human cancers.”  Cerutti et al., 1994

"It's been accepted for years that melatonin suppresses the division of cancer cells."   Doctor Robert Rowen MD, Note WOW

“Melatonin blocks estrogen receptors on breast cells, stopping them from proliferating in response to estrogen and other factors that promote tumor growth. Melatonin also protects breast cells against chemical carcinogens, free radical damage, cortisol-induced damage, and non-estrogen dependent cellular changes that lead to breast cancer. Low dose melatonin therapy should be considered for any breast cancer patient on remission, and high dose for those with active disease.” Doctor Michael Lam MD

Melatonin's role in Cancer Prevention

It appears that melatonin is a KEY player in the cancer game. Melatonin will help keep the initial healthy cell from becoming cancerous in the first place by protecting the cell's DNA.

Once a cell is turned into a cancerous cell, by primarily a lack of oxygen, your body must destroy it. If your body can keep this cancerous cell from dividing the job of destroying ALL, each and every one, of your cancerous cells is made MUCH easier. Melatonin appears to be an agent that can help keep those cancerous cells from replicating.

Melatonin Functions

“Obviously, melatonin’s ability to protect DNA from oxidative damage has implications for many types of cancer, including leukemia, considering that DNA damage due to free radicals is believed to be the initial oncostatic event in a majority of human cancers.”  Cerutti et al., 1994

"It's been accepted for years that melatonin suppresses the division of cancer cells."   Doctor Robert Rowen MD, Note WOW

"Melatonin delivers broad-spectrum immune-enhancing effects and fights viral diseases. At the first sign of flu symptoms, start taking 3 mg-40 mg of melatonin at bedtime. This will induce a powerful immune response, while also promoting the deep sleep needed to support the immune system’s ability to fend off infection."   Winterize Your Immune Defenses

Required for Melatonin Production

Good for Melatonin Production

"Studies have shown melatonin can provide many potential health benefits that would be important to people as they age, including helping to protect the vascular system and improving sleep. Cherries are one of the few known, researched sources of melatonin. As people look for natural ways to promote longevity, including cherries in their daily diet may be helpful."   Russel J. Reiter, Ph.D, nutrition researcher University of Texas Health Science Center

Taking Melatonin

"Commercially available melatonin comes only in high doses of 3 to even 10 milligrams - that's up to 30 times more than you need. This flood of melatonin de-sensitizes your melatonin receptors to its effects and it usually stops working after a few days if at all."   Doctor Richard Wurtman MD Sleep Researcher

"The clinically proven melatonin dose to achieve good sleep is .3 milligrams. The problem is this dose only lasts three or four hours "   Sleep Research

"I believe that most age-related sleep problems can be addressed naturally. While  people who have a n especially difficult time sleeping tend to have more than one reason - low melatonin is almost always one of them when you're over 50."   Doctor Richard Wurtman MD Sleep Researcher

  • The soporific effect of melatonin is often apparent with as low a level as one tenth of one milligram.

  • IMO start at .3 mg add .1 mg until required effect is achieved

  • Less seems to be more with melatonin

  • At 1 mg side effects are nil for most people    But 1 mg is TOO MUCH for most people

  • Sublingual administration seems best

Many elders have trouble sleeping in part because of low Melatonin levels. As always time released pills IMO (See Time Released Pills Protocol) are a poor choice for many of us.

If you take Melatonin before sleeping consider taking small amounts. The 3 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg levels are WAY too high IMO. I found taking 300 mcg before bed and perhaps on awaking several hours later did not leave me feeling so foggy in the morning. It seemed for me that no matter how much Melatonin I took before bed I would awake about four hours later. I would not be fully awake and if I took a little more Melatonin I could get back to sleep in five or ten minutes. Many people have good results on one to three mg of Melatonin. As the pharmacists say start low and go slow. I have found liquid melatonin helps me sleep longer and sounder. Do this about one hour before you want to be sleeping. When you get sleepy go immediately to sleep and be glad for it.

Time Release Melatonin and HBP

"What these studies found was that controlled-release melatonin in particular was most effective at controlling nighttime blood pressure. Only controlled-release melatonin had significant effects on systolic blood pressure, reducing it by an average of 6.1 mmHg, while immediate-release melatonin produced only an insignificant 0.3 mmHg reduction. Controlled-release melatonin also lowered diastolic blood pressure significantly by an average of 3.5 mmHg, while the immediate-release formulation lowered diastolic pressures by just 0.2 mmHg."   Why 24-Hour Blood Pressure Control Matters

"Calcium channel-blocking medications are a reliable means of lowering blood pressure, and are often used in combination with angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). In the same way, combining stevioside with flavonoids such as quercetin, myricitrin, and myricetin provides a similar dual mechanism of action."   Why 24-Hour Blood Pressure Control Matters

"Melatonin levels fall with age, which results in impaired sleep and also contributes to some of the consequences associated with disordered sleep, such as accelerated cognitive decline, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic disorders.43 Many of these effects are now thought to be related to melatonin’s impact on specific brain cells and regions of the brain involved in controlling our day/night cycles.44 Some chronic conditions, such as elevated blood sugar, can suppress normal melatonin production, perhaps accounting for poor sleep in diabetics. Replacing or boosting deficient melatonin has been shown to help normalize sleep/wake patterns and enhance good sleep.44,46 Studies show that raising melatonin levels can counteract the impaired activity/rest cycles common in older animals.47 And a human study has now shown that raising melatonin levels can improve sleep patterns, quality, and duration."   Why 24-Hour Blood Pressure Control Matters

"A study from Thomas Jefferson University has found that melatonin supplements may help lower blood pressure in both younger people and older non-hypertensive individuals.* ... All the subjects in the melatonin group had both clinical and ambulatory readings taken before and after receiving 9 mg of controlled-release melatonin daily for six weeks. Patients in the control group did not receive melatonin, but had the same blood pressure measurements done before and after six weeks. The results showed that, on average, the office systolic reading of the entire melatonin group of subjects was a statistically significant 7.3 mmHg lower compared to baseline; control subjects dropped 4.4 mmHg compared to baseline (non-significant). In the older group, it was, on average, 13.3 mmHg lower (significant), versus 3.3 mmHg in controls (non-significant)."   Melatonin Helps Lower Blood Pressure, Study Shows   Note this dose is way too high for me, I use 300mcg but you should play with the dose in any case and find what works for you

Melatonin in the time release form has been shown to lower night time HBP.

Liquid melatonin works well for me.

Life Extension Fast-Acting Liquid Melatonin

Caution: Do not take this or any other hormone without researching hormone supplementation (See Supplement Protocol) and having your levels checked. In particular do not take supplemental hormones if under the age of about forty. It is strongly suggested you consult with a knowledgeable Integrative Doctor on hormone supplementation.
