Probiotics Protocol

Dysbiosis, Probiotics and Phage Therapy Protocol

Your best value in MUST HAVE probiotic health is Home Made Fermented Food

“It will soon be important for practicing clinicians to have an understanding of the basic concepts of the human microbiome and its relation to human health and disease.”14 "   Mayo Clinic    Note it is important NOW!

"Probiotics are live bacteria that provide health benefits when taken orally.126 Probiotics able to survive the acidic environment of the stomach include acid-producing bacteria from the genus Lactobacillus and the genus Bifidobacterium.127-129 Escherichia coli and Streptococcus from the birth canal are predominantly the first bacteria in a newborn, but upon breastfeeding, these bacteria are mostly displaced by Bifidobacteria.5 Bifidobacteria can account for 95% of gut bacteria in healthy, breast-fed babies.130 The decline of Bifidobacteria with age may contribute to aging-associated disease.131 "   The Microbiome Of Aging And Age-Related Disease Conference

“I now start every morning with a glass of whey and the difference this natural probiotic drink has made to my digestion is enormous. Since I've been feeling so much better in the mornings I've been able to let go of my habitual morning cup of coffee, easily and painlessly, I just don't feel like drinking it anymore.” A  Naturopath

"Spelt also contains special carbohydrates called mucopolysaccharides, which play a decisive role in stimulating the body’s immune system, helping to increase its resistance to infection." Grindstonebakery, Note mucopolysaccharides are probiotics which work hand in glove with your immune system

"Candida or most other bacteria; normally they'll be held in check by sufficient friendly bacteria. E. coli is actually a probiotic when held in check by normal friendly flora. It's only when the friendly probiotic bacteria get killed off that the potentially bad organisms get a chance to get a foothold and take over. The bad bugs are then called opportunists.” The Doctor Within

“Antibiotics often cause diarrhea by altering the type of bacterial growth in the colon or by promoting the overgrowth of candida albicans. When antibiotic use is absolutely necessary it is important to concurrently supplement with probiotics. This will reduce the reductions of friendly bacteria and/or infections with antibiotic-resistant bacteria.” Murray & Pizzorno

“Spore-producing Bacillus coagulans is a unique probiotic that has been found to be superior to other probiotics in terms of surviving the gastric environment, colonizing the intestines, and producing lactic acid.” Life Extension

"If we’ve taken lots of antibiotics in the past, we should attempt to correct the damage done by these by taking a good probiotic supplement."  Doctor David Holland MD

"If you have alcoholic cirrhosis, and you can find this particular strain of probiotic (Lactobacillus casei Shirota), I would go with it. That's because the researchers found it effective for the specific condition."  Doctor Robert Rowen MD

"Simply taking a high-quality probiotic may help you to regain your figure after pregnancy, but the benefits go well beyond this. Research shows giving pregnant women and newborns doses of good bacteria can: protect your baby from eczema, allergies, colic and weight problems as well as reduce your risk of premature labor."   Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

"Also lactobacillus found in the colon and vagina produce hydrogen peroxide. This destroys harmful bacteria and viruses, preventing colon disease, vaginitis, bladder infections and a host of other common ailments. (Infect Dis News Aug.8,91:5). When lactobacillus in the colon or vaginal tract have been overrun with harmful viruses, yeast, or bacteria, an effective douche or enema solution can be made using 3 tablespoons of 3% H202 in 1 quart of distilled water. Keep in mind, however, that a good bacterial flora must always be re-established in theses areas to achieve lasting results.”   Doctor David Williams MD

"Furthermore, body weight dropped by 1.4 percent and waist size decreased by 1.8 percent ... The study extends previous findings ... which showed LG2055 may reduce fat levels (adiposity) and fat cells in animals."   European Journal of Clinical Nutrition June 2010; 64(6):636-43, Note LG2055 is a form of lactobacillus

"Friendly bacteria train your immune system to distinguish between pathogens and non-harmful antigens, and to respond appropriately. This important function prevents your immune system from overreacting to non-harmful antigens, which is the genesis of allergies.”    Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

“Beneficial bacteria have a lifelong, powerful effect on your gut’s immune system and your systemic immune system as well. The bacteria play a crucial role in the development and operation of the mucosal immune system in your digestive tract. They also aid in the production of antibodies to pathogens.”     Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

“Because let there be no mistake about it, the makeup of bacteria residing in your gut has a phenomenal impact on your health — both physical and mental. Optimizing your gut flora is, quite simply, one of the most important things you can do to improve your health and mental state.”   Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

"The lethal implications for the link between gut imbalance and increased disease risks are clear. But what factors are behind this dangerous imbalance? The answer is that accompanying the rise in a number of diseases in Western societies is the increased influence of a host of factors that continually disrupt our natural gut bacteria balance. Antibiotics, Infant formula, Caesarian delivery, Excessive hygiene, Western Diet. Modern Medical Treatments and Age."   Probiotics Provide Vital Protection Against Chronic Disease

"In a new and innovative field of medical study, scientists are exploring how probiotics play a much larger and more vital role in our health than we ever could have imagined. In some impressive research, scientists have determined that specific strains of probiotics have the ability to target disease-specific risk factors—especially those related to cardiovascular disease.1-4 Probiotics have become increasingly popular for their ability to assist in digestion and boost the body’s immunity. But a specific strain of Lactobacillus called L. reuteri 30242 has been found to work in two distinct ways to lower cholesterol: It removes excess cholesterol from the body and increases the metabolism of cholesterol.5,6 "   Unique Probiotic Targets Cardiovascular Disease

"The researchers say the future of health will depend largely on restoring the bacteria in the gut that have been destroyed due to antibiotics. They said that probiotics are the future and will help boost the helpful bacteria levels back to healthy levels so that diseases can be prevented in the long run. “Probiotics could be the next big trend in parenting because once you know which bacteria prevent disease, you can make sure that children get inoculated with those bacteria,” summarized McNagny."   The dark side of antibiotics revealed:

Probiotics are foods and supplements (See Supplement Protocol) that support, replenish and encourage the beneficial microflora in your intestinal tract, part of your immune system. Probiotics thereby perform a number of health-enhancing functions including the production of many vitamins. Your intestinal microorganisms continually and dynamically affect your immune system, digestion, absorption and MANY other aspects of your life. You have about four pounds, 100s of trillions, of these critters in your gut and they are your friends. If you nourish them and make them happy your life can be happy, if not, not. Kinda like a spouse.

Antibiotic drugs (See Antibiotics Protocol) kill bacteria in your gut both beneficial bacteria and potentially harmful bacteria. Due to increasingly strict “food safety regulations”, fewer bacteria bad or good survive the manufacturing process. Many products are pasteurized or sterilized at the end of the manufacturing process, destroying ALL bacteria. Since helpful bacteria are increasingly absent in our food, it becomes even more important to include supplementation (See Probiotic Supplement Protocol) with probiotics. The sad fact is unless you actively include some good bacteria and nutrients for them in your diet you will probably be lacking the types and numbers of microflora to allow you robust good health. Supplemental Probiotics are often recommended to be given on an empty stomach morning and evening.

Supplementing with Probiotics and Fermented Foods

“Probiotics, along with a host of other microorganisms, are so crucial to your health that researchers have compared them to "a newly recognized organ." In fact, your microflora – a term used to describe the bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microbes that make up your microbial inner ecosystem – impact far more than your digestive tract. Mounting research indicate the bacterial colonies residing in your gut may play key roles in the development of cancer, asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and even brain-, behavioral- and emotional problems like ADHD, autism and depression. Recent research also shows that your diet, and subsequently the microorganisms present in your gut, can affect how well you age.”      Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

"Scientists have discovered that disruption of the balance between good and bad bacteria in the gut contributes to the development of chronic conditions such as autoimmune disorders, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, obesity, and more.4-13"   Probiotics Provide Anti-Aging Defense

"The delicate balance between beneficial and bad gut bacteria can be disrupted by innumerable factors,14-27 including the use of antibiotics,14-16 excessive hygiene,15 the Western diet,15-19 modern medical treatments,18 and obesity.20-22 As you age, your bacterial population gradually shifts towards a disease-promoting, rather than a disease-preventing state—simply as a result of aging itself!23-27  ... In fact, your gut is so jam-packed with bacteria that half of your stool is not leftover food—it’s microbial biomass. And as fast as they’re excreted, these microbes multiply to replenish their numbers.3"    Probiotics Provide Anti-Aging Defense

"Probiotics Strengthen And Modulate Your Immune System. Not only does more than 70% of the human immune system reside in the gut, but the intestinal immune system comprises more antibody-producing cells than the rest of the body put together.44 As a result, gastrointestinal secretions are as rich as breast milk in health-supporting and disease-preventing factors.45"  Probiotics Provide Anti-Aging Defense

"In one study, when patients with colon cancer and/or with precancerous polyps supplemented with probiotic bacteria, they experienced sharply reduced proliferation of abnormal colon cells and a significant decline in harmful Clostridium bacteria. (In this study, the probiotic was combined with prebiotics, which are substances that feed or promote the accompanying bacteria).54 "   Probiotics Provide Anti-Aging Defense

“Probiotics have been used in medicine to prevent or treat antibiotic-associated diarrhea.132 Probiotics given to mothers prenatally were shown to reduce the incidence of atopic eczema in their children by about half.133 Probiotics given to the elderly were shown to enhance immune system function.134-137 Probiotics fed to rats and mice were shown to prevent diet-induced obesity and prevent insulin resistance.138-140 Probiotics fed to mice increased longevity by suppressing chronic inflammation.141 “   The Microbiome Of Aging And Age-Related Disease Conference

Eat Raw Food

Any time you COOK ANYTHING you breakdown fiber (prebiotics); kill bacteria (probiotics); hasten the digestive process, hasten the release of sugars into your blood stream and decrease the probiotic and prebiotic potential of that food. SO eat RAW as often as possible. Eating something raw with any cooked food is also a good idea.

Probiotics and Your Immune System

While it can be a challenge in modern society, it is important to allow yourself natural exposure to bacteria in the environment. Something known as ‘grounding’ may be particularly beneficial. Grounding is simply the practice of coming into contact with the earth while barefoot, which has been shown by peer-reviewed research to help remedy a number of conditions. It is also highly important to consume an adequate amount of probiotics in food or supplement form, also known as the ‘good bacteria‘. Fermented food items such as sauerkraut, tempeh, miso or kefir are all rich sources of probiotic bacteria.”   Scientists Confirm Bacteria is Essential to Proper Immunity

"The microbes in the human gut belong to three broad domains, defined by their molecular phylogeny: Eukarya, Bacteria, and Achaea. Of these, bacteria reign supreme, with two dominant divisions -- known as Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes -- making up over 90 percent of the gut's microbial population... Within the bacterial categories... enormous diversity exists. Each individual's community of gut microbes is unique and profoundly sensitive to environmental conditions, beginning at birth. Indeed, the mode of delivery during the birthing process has been shown to affect an infant's microbial profile. Communities of vaginal microbes change during pregnancy in preparation for birth, delivering beneficial microbes to the newborn.”    How Your Gut Flora Influences Your Health

“More and more, science is finding that teeny tiny creatures living in your gut are there for a definite purpose. Known as your microbiome, about 100 trillion of these cells populate your body, particularly your intestines and other parts of your digestive system. In fact, 90 percent of the genetic material in your body is not yours, but rather that of bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms that compose your microflora. True, some of these bacteria can make you sick …But the majority are good, and they work together as helpmates to aid your digestive system and keep you well. Beneficial bacteria, better known as probiotics, along with a host of other microorganisms, are so crucial to your health that researchers have compared them to "a newly recognized organ."    Your Digestive System Dictates Whether You’re Sick or Well

"The link between unbalanced intestinal bacteria and several of today’s most prevalent diseases is clear. However, today’s diet, lifestyle, medical practices, and other factors tend to disrupt gut bacterial balance.2-4 Fortunately, supplementing with key bacterial strains and species counters these destructive influences—restoring your body’s natural, intestine-based protection against a host of non-intestinal diseases!25 "   Probiotics Provide Vital Protection against Chronic Disease

One of the functions of probiotics is to feed intestinal microbia that kill pathogens reaching your GI tract. These good microbia play a vital role in disease prevention. They do so by playing an active role in providing immunity to the pathogens destroyed,

Doctor Natasha has found fermented foods to be an important part of her anti-autism/anti-autoimmune GAPS protocol she has had so much success with.

Probiotics Provide Vital Protection against Chronic Disease

Dysbiosis, Probiotics and Phage Therapy: An approach to Dysbiosis

"When scientists speak of the intestinal microbiome, they refer to the community of trillions of microorganisms that populate the human gut.14 We’re just now beginning to understand that this collection of microorganisms can determine our state of health and illness. It is impossible to avoid all threats to our intestinal microbiome. The increase in our consumption of meats, fats, processed carbohydrates, preservatives, and other additives can alter our bacterial populations.15-17 And, of course, the overuse of antibiotics kills both healthy and bad bacteria indiscriminately.7,18,19 As a result, our delicate microbiome is becoming disrupted and imbalanced, which results in a condition called dysbiosis."   An Approach to Dysbiosis

"Dysbiosis is associated with almost every known disease process, from obesity and cancer to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, allergic reactions, neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s, and even mental health issues such as depression."   An Approach to Dysbiosis

"Imbalances in the intestinal microbiome steadily worsen with age,23-26 and can be blamed for such common complaints as feeling generally unwell, reduced sleep quality, and feeling “foggy. The impact of an unbalanced microbiome can also lead to another disorder related to dysbiosis called small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. People with this condition often have vague but persistent abdominal symptoms, such as pain, bloating, indigestion, gas, or cramping.32,33 And in older adults, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth can contribute to malnutrition and eventual frailty, making the condition a major threat to the elderly."   An Approach to Dysbiosis

"A more comprehensive approach is to use probiotics in combination with another therapy, one that selectively targets and reduces the troublesome bacteria that are taking over the microbiome. This approach of targeting harmful bacteria while replenishing beneficial bacteria can make way for probiotics to better help restore the microbiome to a healthy, balanced state. That is how phage therapy works. Phage therapy reduces potentially troublesome organisms that are overabundant in the microbiome, allowing beneficial organisms to flourish. This helps restore the microbiome to a healthy, balanced state."   An Approach to Dysbiosis

"Studies show that when probiotic organisms are accompanied by targeted phage therapy, the beneficial bacteria grow up to thousands of times their baseline rate, thanks to the removal of the more aggressive microbes. Phage therapy shows real promise in relieving the functional changes and tissue damage wrought by dysbiosis and could be especially valuable for aging individuals experiencing intestinal discomfort, sleep disturbances, or general malaise."   An Approach to Dysbiosis

The above approach to Dysbiosis, shown to work in vitro and the mouse model, appears to me to be very rational and should certainly be tried by anyone with unexplained GI Tract problems.

Here is a relatively inexpensive product implementing this Phage approach

“You can ferment virtually any food, and every traditional culture has traditionally fermented their foods to prevent spoilage. There are also many fermented beverages and yoghurts. Quite a large percent of all the foods that people consumed on a daily basis were fermented, and each mouthful provides trillions of beneficial bacteria—far more than you can get from a probiotics supplement. Here's a case in point: It's unusual to find a probiotic supplement containing more than 10 billion colony-forming units. But when my team actually tested fermented vegetables produced by probiotic starter cultures, they had 10 trillion colony-forming units of bacteria. Literally, one serving of vegetables was equal to an entire bottle of a high potency probiotic! Fermented foods also give you a wider variety of beneficial bacteria, so all in all, it's your most cost effective alternative.”    How Your Gut Flora Influences Your Health, Note Your best value in probiotics is home made fermented food

Even a good expensive probiotic supplement will only put a few billion good bacteria in your gut. Fermented foods will inexpensively put trillions of good bacteria in your gut.

Good Probiotics

"Don’t get me wrong. I love warm, jammy rhubarb oozing out of pies and bringing a few rays of spring sunshine to muffins and coffee cakes. But when left raw, rhubarb evokes the almost forbidden pleasure of sashimi: a familiar flavor with a surprising texture." Helen Rennie

Researchers have found they may play key roles in the development of cancer, asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and even brain, behavioral and emotional problems like ADHD, autism and depression.”    Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

"In terms of potential for human health, I would place it [Microflora]  with stem cells as one of the two most promising areas of research at the moment…We're seeing an unprecedented rate of discovery. Everywhere we look, microbes seem to be involved."   Doctor Rob Knight PhD

Prebiotics

“Fiber and digestion-resistant starch are called prebiotics. Prebiotics are components of food that cannot be digested by the stomach or small intestine, but are fermented in the colon to provide additional nutrients and health benefits.124,125  Prebiotics are digestion-resistant chains (polymers, oligosaccharides) of sugar molecules. Such oligosaccharides occur naturally in chicory, asparagus, onions, soybeans, and milk.142-144 Prebiotics promote the growth of Bifidobacteria in the colon.145 Prebiotics have been shown to protect rats from colon cancer.146,147 In humans, prebiotics have been shown to reduce appetite,148 improve insulin sensitivity, and promote weight loss.149 ”   The Microbiome Of Aging And Age-Related Disease Conference

Prebiotics are foods or supplements that provide food for your probiotic bacteria in your colon. Complex hard to digest complex carbs on the unripe side provide the best prebiotics. You want the prebiotic carbs to make it into your colon somewhat undigested. In your colon the probiotic bacteria will digest the prebiotic carbs and produce MANY salubrious substances  your body will use to improve your health.
