Quercetin’s enzyme-inhibiting action extends to enzymes such as phospholipase, which catalyzes the release of arachidonic acid from phospholipids stored in cell membranes. Arachidonic acid serves as the key substrate for substances such as thromboxanes, inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. In addition, quercetin inhibits the enzymes cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, which catalyze the conversion of arachidonic acid into its metabolites. Quercetin is a component of the vitamin C complex: it is a flavonoid with anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine, anti-microbial and procardiac properties. Quercetin can reduce your chances of getting a viral infection. Quercetin is able to stabilize membranes. This is not only true of free-floating blood cells, but also capillary and arterial walls. These activities are due to the ability of quercetin to act as a potent antioxidant as well as an inhibitor to the enzyme that breaks down connective tissue.

Research shows that quercetin may help to prevent cancer, especially prostate cancer. Quercetin reduces the oxidation of the LDL packet and cholesterol. Quercetin lessens the expression of pro-inflammatory genes associated with allergy and arthritis  Quercetin may help with allergy, asthma and osteoarthritis symptoms. Quercetin may also help reduce symptoms like fatigue, depression and anxiety.

It is important to remember that vitamin C is a COMPLEX of substances. Quercetin is one of those components. This explains quercetin's many salubrious properties in relation to collagen. To fully enjoy quercetin' many benefits you MUST assure you also get ALL the other vitamin C components.

Rutin, Quercetin  and Hesperidin, all components of Vitamin C, SHOULD be taken together for best results. I take Quercetin daily with my vitamin C.

   

Tocotrienols and Quercetin

Quercetin in found in green leafy vegetables, onions, tea, berries, grapes, tomatoes, garlic, wine, apples, cranberries, buckwheat, beans. Any food with a high vitamin C content should supply quercetin.

What to Take with your Quercetin

Quercetin, rutin and hesperidin can be taken together with vitamin C for better results. The absorption of quercetin is limited, and studies have shown that the enzyme bromelain is capable of increasing the intestinal absorption of quercetin. Quercetin appears to potentiate and adjuvanticate resveratrol so IMO take it with resveratrol and grape seed extract often.

   

Quercetin and Atherosclerosis

Quercetin has been shown to protect LDL from oxidation, both by lipid peroxides and transition metal ions.”   Biochemical Pharmacology 39(11):1743-50. Note the oxidation of the LDL packets is often  the beginning of the atherosclerotic process

Quercetin, a close chemical relative of resveratrol, is present in a variety of fruits and vegetables, tea and red wine. Quercetin is found in turmeric, garlic, green leafy vegetables, red and yellow onions mostly in the skin, buckwheat and in the pulp portion of citrus fruit, apples (skin), broccoli, shallots, grapes, blueberries, broccoli, cranberries, green leafy vegetables and summer squash. Try and get as many of these sources as possible not only for the quercetin but for the MANY other salubrious substances contained in them.
