“The 1992 study actually found the maximum safe dietary Se intake to be approximately 800 micrograms per day (15 micrograms per kilogram body weight), but suggested 400 micrograms per day to not only avoid toxicity, but also to avoid creating an imbalance of nutrients in the diet and to account for data from other countries.”   Selenium Toxicity

Selenium-Methyl L-Selenocysteine

"Selenium-methyl L-selenocysteine is an organic complex of selenium with a sulfur-containing amino acid, in this case, L-cysteine. This compound is the most recent form of selenium to attract scientific interest. Found in plants in the Allium family (garlic and onions) grown in selenium-enriched soil, it is one of the most potent forms of selenium known.57 Laboratory studies reveal several mechanisms of action unique to this form of selenium. Perhaps most intriguingly, selenium-methyl L-selenocysteine supplements restore proteins associated with normal circadian (24-hour) rhythms.58 Disruptions in circadian rhythms are associated with development of several cancer types, most notably breast cancers. Restoring those important regulatory proteins with selenium-methyl L-selenocysteine normalizes levels of melatonin and estrogen receptors related to the aggressiveness of breast cancers.25"   Selenium Insufficiency Increases Cancer Risk

"Intakes of selenium in the range of 3200-6990 μg/day by humans are associated with chronic selenosis, with no selenosis being observed for the intake range of 240-1510 μg/day (mean 750 μg/day). The Scientific Committee on Food (SCF) has previously given an opinion on the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) of selenium , defining proportionately lower intake levels for children, based on body weight differences compared to adults. On the basis of the findings in humans, the SCF noted that an intake of about 850 μg/day could be taken as a No-Observed-Adverse-Effect-Level (NOAEL) for clinical selenosis. Using an uncertainty factor of 3 to allow for the remaining uncertainties of the studies , the SCF derived a UL for selenium of 300μg/day."    Se-methyl-L-selenocysteine   Note this tells me 800 mcg/day may be safely be taken for at least a few weeks if you are low

Just another reason to have your garlic/onions or both each and every day. If you take selenium supplements make sure you take this organic form Selenium-Methyl L-Selenocysteine.

     

Selenium an Essential Mineral most People Lack

Selenium an antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anti-viral, anti-retroviral, immuno-stimulatory, chelating mineral is a VERY important mineral for your health. Selenium is deficient in the soils surrounding the major population centers in this country. Most of the food we eat in some of the areas of the US is almost totally devoid of the minerals magnesium (See Magnesium Protocol) and selenium due to inherently low soil levels and the poor farming practices of our agriculture industry.  Selenium has been shown to be deficient in most of the population. A Selenium deficiency may worsen the effects of iodine deficiency on your thyroid (See Thyroid Protection Protocol) function. Selenium deficiency may play a role in autoimmune disease. A Selenium deficiency can condemn you to a rapid death by AIDS (See AIDS Protection Protocol) should you contract AIDS. Make sure you get at least 400 mcg/day of selenium IMO especially if you suffer from any chronic distributed muscle pain.

  

Selenium is a Component of Glutathione

"A reduction in prostate cancer risk was found in association with higher serum levels of selenium. When participants were divided into four groups according to selenium status, those whose selenium was in the third highest group had a 39 percent lower risk of prostate cancer than those whose selenium levels were lowest. Selenium helps prevent harmful oxidation by working with a group of nutrients that prevent oxygen molecules from becoming too reactive. This group of nutrients includes vitamin C (See Vitamin C Protocol), vitamin E (See Vitamin E Protocol), glutathione (See Glutathione Protocol) and vitamin B3 (See Vitamin B3). Selenium is considered to be from 200 to 500 times more potent an antioxidant than Vitamin E. Selenium chelates heavy metals. Garlic (See Garlic Protocol) is the best-known natural source of selenium; yet another reason to eat garlic. Buy organic garlic if you can it often has more of several key ingredients including selenium.

I supplement with 200mcg of Selenium many days. IMO you can safely take 800 mcg per day at least for a few weeks if you have had a deficient diet. Studies have shown that prolonged daily selenium intakes of 450 to 550 micrograms do not often produce adverse effects.
Once again we are warned about getting too MUCH of a vital substance when 90% of us are getting too LITTLE. Why do you suppose this constantly happens? You would think the law of averages would apply SOMETIME would you not.

IMO most of us must take a Selenium supplement most days, as you cannot be assured of getting any, unless you eat Brazil nuts or more than a little garlic. A few good-sized Brazil nuts could be your daily supply of Selenium.

Most experts recommend 400 mcg as the top daily dose. I have to be careful with my large garlic and onion intake. If you religiously eat organic garlic and or onions everyday this may be enough selenium; provided they are not grown in selenium poor soils of course. I have taken too much selenium on occasion. It manifested as bleeding too easily: it quickly modulated when I cut out all selenium for a few weeks.

IMO just be aware of how important selenium is for you and make sure you are getting 300 to 800 mcg/day from all sources.
