Stomach Acid Protocol

If you believe you are having a stomach acid problem first you must determine if you have too little or too much stomach acid. If you invest a little time you can do this yourself; otherwise partner with a good integrative MD. Please don't ASSUME GERD or acid reflux is caused by TOO MUCH stomach acid. Usually it is not.

 

TOO LITTLE STOMACH ACID

   

Most of us over 40 or so have at least SOME problems making Stomach Acid

     

"Several human organs need iodine but can not absorb it until blood iodine levels reach high values (stomach, salivary glands). Most persons exhibit impaired production of stomach acid as they age. This impaired capability to produce adequate stomach acid may be a result of iodine deficiency as iodine promotes stomach acidity.”   Doctor James Howenstine, MD, Note be sure to replete your iodine often

Nearly half of all Americans over 50 lack the stomach acid to digest their food fully, let alone absorb vitamin pills. Over 90% of them don't have too much stomach acid, but too little... And when they take supplements to increase  the acid, the heartburn goes away forever."   Doctor Jonathan Weight MD  

“Unfortunately, many people today don’t have normal levels of hydrochloric acid due to mineral deficiencies, particularly zinc. People who cannot chew their food and who have low hydrochloric acid eventually stop enjoying greens and even develop a distaste for them. As humans consume more processed food they become increasingly deficient in nutrients. Being unable to create stomach acid, they stop consuming greens and become even more deficient. Their health continues to deteriorate.”   Victoria Boutenko

"As I mentioned here and here, low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria) causes many problems, including bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine, lowered resistance to infection by ingested pathogens, an increase in gastric cancer susceptibility, and reduced nutrient absorption. It has the potential to underlie many other issues, including food sensitivities. The prevalence varies by age, increasing from less than 10% in the young to over 50% in the elderly."    Low Stomach Acid and Nutrient Absorption

Stomach Acid is normally produced by the parietal cells of the stomach when the food eaten requires Stomach Acid. Less than ideal stomach acid production prevents some foods from being broken down properly and places an added burden on the remainder of the digestive process (See Digestion Protocol), including enzyme production from the pancreas. Less than ideal stomach acid production or antacids (See Antacid Protocol) can lead to “acid stomach”. Over 90% of elder adults suffering from "acid reflux" have too little stomach acid...

Yeah it’s a strange world. What is even stranger is zinc (See Zinc Protocol) is required to produce stomach acid and stomach acid is required to digest many zinc sources. Wow. The answer for us old fogies is digestive enzymes and bitters eaten with food, iodine and zinc supplementation.

You MUST have stomach acid to digest protein (See Protein Protocol), calcium (See Calcium Protocol), magnesium, iron, vitamin B12 (See Vitamin B12 Protocol), some carbs and some other good things your body requires. Your stomach acid protects your body from germs and other pathogens you may inadvertently swallow.

Low levels of hydrochloric acid have an adverse impact on the availability of dietary amino acids, even in a higher protein diet, so stimulating the pancreas using lacto-fermented foods is crucial.

  

Stomach Acid is required to digest

  • Calcium

  • Iron (See Iron Protocol)

  • Magnesium (See Magnesium Protocol)

  • All Proteins

  • Some Carbs

  • Folate

  • Vitamin B3

  • Vitamin B6

  • Vitamin B12

  • Vitamin A

  • Parasites

  • Pathogens

  • Zinc

  • Reduce the risk of bone problems

  • Reduce the risk of infection

  • Risk of rebound over acid production (causing the inability to "get off the drugs". Yep they want you to be an eternal addict.

  

Stomach Acid production normally slows down with age. HOWEVER zinc and iodine levels in elders are often low thus some of the stomach acid problem in older people MAY be related to low zinc and iodine levels. Zinc and iodine are KEY minerals for stomach acid production you MUST keep yours topped up. If you have low stomach acid try a week or two at 5 mg/day of iodine and 25 mg/day of zinc. It works for me.

    

Symptoms of low Stomach Acid Production

"When sufficient stomach acid is sensed, the LES [Lower Esophageal Sphincter] will close. However, in conditions where there is a lack of stomach acid, the sphincter remains open, allowing stomach contents, including acid, to flow back through the opening, potentially creating a sense of irritation and discomfort. Adequate stomach acid production is an essential criterion for the sphincter to function properly and prevent the backflow of stomach contents.1"   Doctor Jonathan Wright MD

  • Undigested food in the stools

  • Acid Reflux

  • Bloating, belching, burning, & flatulence immediately after meals

  • Chronic candida (See Candida Protocol)

  • Nausea after taking supplements (See Supplement Protocol)

  • Rectal itching

  • Iron & calcium deficiencies.

  • Intestinal parasites

  

Folks if you are over 40 or if you are as you should be, curious about your health, you MUST check your stools for undigested food, at least on occasion. This is how I finally figured out my Stomach Acid production was too low. A little undigested food once and awhile or with some foods is OK but MOST of the times with many different foods and you have a serious problem of some sort and you MUST solve it. Most likely if you are older it’s a low Stomach Acid production or a digestive enzyme (See Digestive Enzymes Protocol) problem. If after research and effort you cannot produce uniform stools with little undigested food IMO you MUST see an integrative doctor.

Note overgrown helicobacter pylori (See H Pylori Protocol) will cause your stomach to continuously produce stomach acid in an attempt to kill the H. pylori; obviously this is not desirable.

I take bitters (See Bitters Protocol) often along with digestive enzymes, when eating protein or calcium containing foods or taking supplements (See Supplement Protocol).

     

Defecation and Stomach Acid

Strange enough most old people do not produce sufficient stomach acid. 

   

    

Helpful for Stomach Acid production

TOO MUCH STOMACH ACID

Actually too much stomach is almost NEVER a problem as long as it stays in your stomach. Your stomach is DESIGNED to contain your stomach acid. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is what you need to protect against NOT too much stomach acid.

Of course the best answer is to get motivated to remove the lifestyle risk factors for GERD and your body will usually "cure" itself.

     

GERD Risk Factors

  • Inability to make SUFICIENT Stomach Acid

  • Overweight

  • Eating without properly chewing

  • Eating too large meals

  • Smoking

  • Eating Fried Foods

  • Drinking Sodas

  • Too much caffeine

  • Sugar Diabetes

  • Asthma

  • Drug Use (some drugs) No drug is a usually the best drug unless it is used for short term

  • Eating before bedtime or laying down

  • Lack of fermented foods in the diet

  • Lack of probiotics

  • Lack of digestive enzymes; supplement if necessary

GERD is at base nothing but a lifestyle problem most of the time. With a little work your GERD will go away and you will be solving a LOT of your other health related problems.

The GERD problem is not USUALLY too much acid and an acid blocker will not solve it. Please read this article and decide if it does not present a reasonable solution.

GERD Induced Cancer is a Major and Growing Problem

"Rates of esophageal cancer are rapidly increasing, and GERD is a major contributor.31,32 Esophageal cancers are most common in white men over 50, in smokers, in those who are obese, and especially in people with frequent symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux.33,34 Studies show that people with recurrent symptoms of reflux have a 7.7-fold risk of esophageal cancer, while those with long-standing, severe symptoms are at an incredible 43.5-fold risk of the disease!31 Worse, the prevalence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus has been skyrocketing relative to squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus35,36—which used to be the more common of the two.
