Cocoa is a component of my daily Pro-Cardio Drink See Pro-Cardio Drink Protocol

Cocoa is a Flavonoid as Well as a Polyphenol

"Although it isn’t higher in absolute polyphenols, the larger serving size of cocoa makes it the biggest dietary source so far. cocoa contains a whole host of polyphenolic compounds which include flavonoid, phenolic acid, and other groups (24). Significantly, a wide range of research links the compounds in cocoa to protection against chronic diseases such as cardiovascular heart disease and dementia (25, 26)."   A Complete Guide To Polyphenols

Cocoa comes as a 100% Cocoa product

“The flavonols in cocoa stimulate your body's production of nitric oxide—boosting blood flow to your heart, brain, and other organs. Cocoa thins your blood just as well as low-dose aspirin!”     Harvard University, Note this may imply the powdered cocoa may be better than the bakers cocoa, this is the conclusion I have made

At least two products, bakers cocoa and 100% cocoa powder are pure cocoa. 100% cocoa powder is the best way to take cocoa IMO.

“A recent randomized, controlled clinical trial showed daily consumption of 6.3 grams of dark chocolate containing 30 mg of polyphenols can improve endothelial function, increase formation of vasodilative nitric oxide, and help maintain healthy blood pressure levels that are already within normal range.” Life Extension, Note WOW what an array of key health benefits from a delicious treat, just make sure to exclude the sugar and milk of milk chocolate

"The second study followed 41 medicated diabetic patients. They divided the patients into two groups. They gave the first group flavanol-rich cocoa (321 mg flavanols). They gave the second (control) group a nutrient-matched control (25 mg of flavanols). They gave each solution three times a day for 30 days. Those in the flavanols-rich cocoa supplemented group had a wonderful 30% increase in FMD, a key circulation marker, compared to the control group." Doctor Robert Jay Rowen MD

"Cocoa and the curry spice turmeric are other examples of natural antioxidants. Cocoa has been shown to directly benefit endothelial function and to lower blood pressure."  Doctor Michael Ozner MD

"Chocolate eaters in a study of heart attack survivors had lower blood pressure and were less likely to die of heart disease, scientists in Sweden said. Of the 1,169 patients studied, those who ate chocolate two or more times a week cut their risk of dying from heart disease nearly threefold compared to those who didn't eat chocolate at all, said the study's lead author, Doctor Imre Janszky of Karolinska Institute. This study also suggested antioxidants in cacao cut the risk of death from heart disease in healthy older men and post-menopausal women,"  Life Extension, Note cocoa should work MUCH better than these very good results

"Cocoa flavanols improve endothelial function by enhancing nitric oxide bioactivity,36 increasing blood flow,36 reducing the tendency of blood to clot,37 promoting already normal blood pressure levels,38 and helping LDL resist oxidation, which may contribute to the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque in artery walls.39 In a controlled human study, six weeks of cocoa consumption increased brachial artery hyperemic blood flow by up to 76% compared with baseline values.40 In a recent randomized controlled trial, healthy individuals with above-optimal blood pressure took small amounts of dark chocolate containing 30 mg of polyphenols as part of a usual diet. The cocoa polyphenols in the chocolate efficiently improved their blood pressure readings as well as plasma markers of vasodilative nitric oxide.41 The age-related depletion of nitric oxide is considered a major impediment to healthy arterial blood flow.     Life Extension   Note will not feed your pet LOL

"In a study published in Journal of Proteome Research the Lausanne based researchers said their results show that eating dark chocolate daily reduced stress hormone levels in those who had high anxiety levels. The authors maintain that there is growing pool of evidence pointing to the potential health implications of dark chocolate constituents, with the flavonoids in cocoa linked to better cardiovascular health through the maintenance of low blood pressure, improved endothelial function, and a reduction in thrombotic, oxidative and inflammatory states."   Dark Chocolate Helps Reduce Stress    Note the less toxic powdered milk and toxic sugar the better

Cocoa is so full of polyphenols that they practically spill out of the container. This study is not a license to go out and eat chocolate bars and chocolate candy. Instead, buy some plain old pure unsweetened cocoa powder – you'll find it in just about any supermarket, usually in the baking aisle – and add it to your coffee.”   Doctor William Douglass MD

"Resveratrol activates a specific set of genes that promote a longer healthier life. These substances that make red wine, dark chocolate  and green tea good for us,  appear to stave off a wide array of age-related diseases and keep us feeling young and vital."  Doctor Joseph Maroon MD

"Two recent studies showed the salubrious results of cocoa consumption. The first study found that people who ate one serving of chocolate per week were 22% less likely to have a stroke.1 The second study found that people who ate 50 grams of chocolate once a week were 46% less likely to die following a stroke than those who didn’t eat chocolate."   HFA, Note we KNOW it is the COCOA in the chocolate doing the good here

"In a controlled human study arterial blood flow improved by 37% following ingestion of standardized cocoa polyphenols and this persisted for about eight hours. A 36% decrease in undesirable platelet activation was also registered. The cocoa polyphenols appear to exert their beneficial effect by enhancing endothelial nitric oxide."    Life Extension

"Basic science has demonstrated quite convincingly that dark chocolate particularly, with a cocoa content of at least 70%, reduces oxidative stress and improves vascular and platelet function,"    Frank Ruschitzka, Professor of Cardiology

"A recent study found that 6.7 grams of dark chocolate per day, a bit less than half a bar a week, can significantly reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. In particular, it can significantly reduce the risk factor C-reactive protein. CRP is a marker for inflammation. The researchers found this amount reduces CRP by 17%. That's enough to reduce your risk of heart disease between 25-33%."    Doctor Robert Rowen MD, Note IMO you want at least one half ounce of 100% cocoa/day. I often eat an ounce or two. The evidence is OVERWHELMING.

According to the Spanish research, eating dark chocolate reduces damage to the blood vessels of cirrhotic patients and also lowers blood pressure in the liver. Dark chocolate contains potent anti-oxidants which reduce the post-prandial (after-meal) blood pressure in the liver (or portal hypertension) associated with damaged liver blood vessels (endothelial dysfunction). The data also showed that eating dark chocolate may exert additional beneficial effects throughout the whole body. In comparison, white chocolate, which contains no beneficial ‘phytochemicals’, did not result in the same effects."   Benefit Of Dark Chocolate For Liver Disease Patients, Note once again dump the sugar and milk and ONLY eat the healthful Cocoa

"I average about 1 ounce of dark chocolate daily for the past two years. No, I haven't gained any weight. Of course, I watch my diet fanatically. But, since adding chocolate, my blood pressure, which was at 95/65 two years ago, has actually fallen to a level I've never seen in an otherwise healthy adult: 84/56.”   Doctor Robert Rowen MD

CHOCOLATE – IS IT REALLY A HEALTH FOOD?

Please read all the above EVIDENCE; and eat a couple of ounces/day of this magic elixir.

There is strong evidence that Cocoa a nitric oxide producing antioxidant with its powerful Flavonoids and high ORAC ORAC value is very protective against Cardiovascular Disease Protection, Stroke, Diabetes Type 2 and Cancer. If you are taking a dangerous toxic drug for “High Cholesterol” (See Cholesterol Protocol) you might want to research Cocoa. Research has shown Cocoa can lower cholesterol as effectively as the very dangerous Statin Drugs. Cocoa has been shown to improve blood flow to your brain, heart and body; much of this benefit is provided by the Nitric Oxide produced by the cocoa.

Cocoa is LOADED with Polyphenols

Cocoa is so full of polyphenols that they practically spill out of the container. This study is not a license to go out and eat chocolate bars and chocolate candy. Instead, buy some plain old pure unsweetened cocoa powder – you'll find it in just about any supermarket, usually in the baking aisle – and add it to your coffee.”   Doctor William Douglass MD

Cocoa is one of the most potent superfoods known to humans. It has been linked to such a wide array of health benefits that it staggers the mind. … In addition to its heart-protective antioxidant content, cocoa also seems to lower blood pressure, prevent blood clotting, increase dilation of blood vessels, while decreasing body weight and central obesity. It also seems to chemically promote alertness and reduce stress, thereby removing other risk factors for heart attack and stroke. Cocoa also seems to fight the related condition of diabetes, reducing insulin resistance and increasing insulin sensitivity. The other major area of cocoa health research has been in the food's ability to fight cancer. Studies suggest that cocoa polyphenols can inhibit the growth of cancer cells, prevent DNA damage that causes cancer, and even inactivate certain carcinogenic chemicals.”    How dark chocolate really is the 'food of the gods': fights inflammation, cancer, Alzheimer's and more

Folks you MUST realize the importance of maximizing your intake of Polyphenols. Then take note of the massive amounts of polyphenols in 100% cocoa POWDER.

Heart Health and Cocoa (Data from Healing Spices)

"Cocoa, the spice, is one of the richest sources of flavanols, plant compounds that help protect the heart in a variety of ways. Study after study shows that cocoa flavanols can disarm cell damaging free radicals. preserve cell membranes. protect DNA., prevent the formation of artery clogging plaque, improve blood flow to the heart. lower high blood pressure and prevent blood clots that can cause a heart attack or stroke. ... Compared to the San Blas residents [Who eat a LOT of cocoa] the death rates in [next door] Panama were six times higher from heart attack, 17 times higher from stroke,  and 18 times  higher from cancer."   Healing Spices   Note WOW this is incredible times 3

"Eat foods containing antioxidant-rich cocoa. Cocoa is good for you in so many ways, but it’s especially good for your heart. And one of the ways it helps is that the flavonoids in cocoa activate the endothelial cells in your arteries to produce NO.2 Plus, cocoa improves circulation even in healthy adults.3"    Doctor Al Sears MD

Cocoa promotes Endothelial Health

"Studies show the flavonols in cocoa stimulate your body's production of nitric oxide—boosting blood flow to your heart, brain, and other organs. In fact, one study found cocoa thins your blood just as well as low-dose aspirin!"   Doctor William Douglass MD, Note nitric oxide is very protective of your endothelium

Pooled analysis of all trials found that participants who received daily cocoa or chocolate for at least two weeks experienced a significant reduction in blood pressure compared with those who received a placebo. Further analysis determined that blood pressure was only lowered in those with hypertension or pre-hypertension, while those with normal blood pressure did not experience a significant reduction.”   Blood-Pressure-Lowering-Benefit-for-Dark-Chocolate

“Journal of the American College of Cardiology, found that daily cocoa flavonol consumption more than doubled the number of circulating angiogenic cells (CAC) in the blood. CACs have been shown to have vessel repair and maintenance functions, which can contribute to healthy blood vessels. The results showed that blood vessel function improved by 47% compared to low-flavonol consumption.”    Cocoa Repairs Blood Vessels, Note this is a KEY finding, couple CACs with 3 grams of vitamin C/day and your arteries will repair themselves

“The flavonols in cocoa stimulate your body's production of nitric oxide—boosting blood flow to your heart, brain, and other organs. Cocoa thins your blood just as well as low-dose aspirin!”     Harvard University   NOTE so what do ya want dark chocolate or low dose poison

"As a general rule, any time "chocolate" is evaluated for its health benefits, we're dealing with dark unprocessed chocolate and/or raw cacao—not your average processed milk chocolate candy bar."c

"Cocoa and the curry spice turmeric are other examples of natural antioxidants. Cocoa has been shown to directly benefit endothelial function and to lower blood pressure."  Doctor Michael Ozner MD

Cocoa  and its produced NO is very salubrious for your endothelial function. The endothelium is the part of your arteries that contacts the flowing blood. IMO the endothelium is a body part we should pay attention to and work to improve. Much of cardiovascular health is dependent on good endothelial function. The first event in the CVD disease cascade is often a failure of the endothelium.

Who says health knowledge is boring; who would have thought something as scandalously delicious as cocoa could be one of the very best things for your heart?

Nitric Oxide and Cocoa

Image result for graph nitric oxide production and cardiovascular health

Please NOTE Aging does not cause these DISEASE processes; if you just do a few things you can be 100 and still producing close to the Nitric Oxide you produced at 20. Looking for an "anti-aging pill"? Here it is!

Prevent Arterial Plaque and prevent Arteriosclerosis AND you can retain almost ALL NO production no matter what your age. Whew says Lou age 80! Arterial Plaque and Arteriosclerosis are almost 100% preventable and reversible and not difficult to do. DO IT!

"Lastly, he recommends that patients do everything possible to support healthy nitric oxide levels. Nitric oxide is critical to healthy arterial function. To help boost nitric oxide, Dr. Kahn first recommends lifestyle modifications like getting more exercise and juicing. If this isn’t enough, he suggests supplements like pomegranate extract."   Joel K. Kahn, MD, FACC   Note assuring NO in large amounts is one of your most important health tasks IMO

"IL-I2 in conjunction with nitric oxide stimulates the cytotoxic activity of natural killer cells, enhancing their release of  ... [interferons], have also an important role in promoting Th1 lymphocyte differentiation."   Medical Immunology 5th Ed   Note without Nitric Oxide you have a difficult time jumpstarting your entire immune response; this lack of Nitric Oxide is one reason older people have weak immune systems; weak immune systems are the CHIEF reason older people Die. Beyond simply dying you WANT your last few decades of life to be Physically Productive; without NO this is not going to happen. So are some things more important than life itself? YES IMO.

If you consider that you must solve your CVD Problems AND your Arteriosclerosis Problems to assure optimal NO Production AND with your NO Problems solved your Life Expectancy SOARS. You can readily see why I consider your NO Problem perhaps your CHIEF Health Problem to solve.

“The flavonols in cocoa stimulate your body's production of nitric oxide—boosting blood flow to your heart, brain, and other organs. Cocoa thins your blood just as well as low-dose aspirin!”     Harvard University, Note this may imply the powered cocoa may be better than the bakers cocoa, this is the conclusion I have made

Nitric Oxide is a Critical chemical produced in your body; Nitric Oxide USUALLY vastly decreases in your old age. Nitric Oxide need NOT decrease. IMO Nitric Oxide is KEY to a healthy old age; an old age full of ENERGY and ROBUST good health. PLEASE study why this is so and do ALL YOU CAN to increase your NO. Cocoa powder is one very important and very favorable way to increase your NO.

Most foods that increase NO produce this NO for less than 24 hours so you must CONTINUALLY ingest these foods. Cocoa can and should be consumed EVERY DAY.

OPCs and Cocoa

Cocoa is an OPC. OPCs are a class of antioxidant plus it will pay you to be very familiar with IMO. Once your learn the manifold benefits and multiple sources of the OPCs it may alter your eating habits, at least it has mine.

Cocoa Benefits

“When I question 100 year olds on what they eat Olive Oil always comes up usually right after chocolate.”   6,000 Year Old Longevity Secret in Olive Oil

"Chocolate! A healthy way to snack”

Chocolate Super Food Smoothie Recipe with David Wolfe

"Led by Emilio Sacanella, the researchers recruited 18 healthy volunteers aged between 19 and 49 and randomly assigned them to one of three groups: The first group received 40 g of cocoa powder with milk, providing 62.1 mg of flavanols and 3.2 mg of flavonols per day; the second group received the same cocoa dose with water (not milk); and the final group received only milk. After three weeks of intervention, the researchers report that NF-kappaB levels decreased significantly in the cocoa powder in water group, but not in the cocoa-milk group. Levels increased in the milk group, they added. On the other hand, both cocoa groups experienced decreases in levels of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), which is reported to play a role in the early development of atherosclerosis.”   Cocoa's Benefits are Linked to Anti-Inflammatory Potential, Note the ICAM-1 molecule signals of inflammatory problems within the artery wall. This result indicates there is less inflammation in the artery with cocoa.

“Flavonoid compounds in cocoa may reduce inflammation associated with arthritis in lab animals, says a new study with possible implications for joint health. Lab rats fed a cocoa-enriched diet displayed significantly lower levels of compounds associated with the progression of arthritis. These changes are not enough to significantly decrease chronic articular swelling, although a tendency to its modulation is observed at the end of the study,"   British Journal of Nutrition

"Flavonoid-rich cocoa consumption significantly improves blood pressure, insulin resistance, lipid profiles and FMD."    Journal of Nutrition, Note FMD is a key positive circulation marker

“The number of health benefits now associated with the cocoa bean is really quite impressive, including benefits to your heart and blood vessels, brain and nervous system, improved insulin sensitivity, and even possibly slowing down the rate at which you age. Cacao’s benefits are related to compounds naturally occurring in the bean, including epicatechin and resveratrol. Cacao contains an antioxidant called epicatechin, thought to help shield your nerve cells from damage.”   Surprise! Chocolate CAN Be Good for You

"Cocoa is good for you in so many ways, but it’s especially good for your heart. And one of the ways it helps is that the flavonoids in cocoa activate the endothelial cells in your arteries to produce NO.2 Plus, cocoa improves circulation even in healthy adults.3"    Doctor Al Sears MD

"When healthy people ate an ounce of flavanol rich dark chocolate every day for a week they had improved "insulin sensitivity."   Healing Spices

"Scientific studies show cocoa powder significantly improves reaction times. It also enhances regional neuronal activity and subsequent changes in cerebral blood flow, blood volume and oxygen metabolism."   Life Extension

Have some Spearmint with your Cocoa

"Human studies have demonstrated that a group of phenolic compounds from spearmint can enhance performance on tests of working memory, the critical factor in sustaining attention and focus during problem solving. Cocoa powder was recently shown to significantly improve the match between brain cell activity and brain blood flow, an important requirement for crisp mental function that also correlates with resistance to developing dementia. Spearmint extracts have now been added to a high-quality cocoa powder to provide a boost for attention and mental focus, capitalizing on the benefits of each natural compound."   Cognitive Benefits of Spearmint

"Many people turn to coffee every day for a quick boost in mental focus and working memory. Yet some find this leads to a later “crash” or interferes with sleep. Others don’t like coffee because of stomach acidity and other issues. As an alternative, scientists have developed an instant spearmint herbal tea that targets working memory and is stimulant-free. Recent human evidence demonstrates that this tea quickly and sustainably boosts mental focus, attention, and concentration—while supporting restful sleep at night. Lab and animal data suggest that spearmint polyphenols may promote neurogenesis—the growth of new brain cells—while protecting existing neurons and boosting neurotransmitter levels."   Spearmint Tea Quickly Boosts Mental Focus

I try to take some spearmint with my daily cocoa.

Get the BEST Cocoa?

"So doesn’t the average bar contain these things too? Not so much, explains Wolfe. When cacao is roasted it looses its vitamin C and its fiber is disturbed. Cooking cacao also destroys PEAs (phenylethylamines), the chemicals contained in chocolate that make us feel like we’re in love. Green is the new black! Raw chocolate also contains neurotransmitter modulating agents, which are chemicals that act as natural antidepressants."   The raw, tasty truth about natural chocolate  Caution: Eat the raw cocoa in SMALL amounts early in the day and observe YOUR results. Some people are over stimulated by some forms of "raw cocoa". Make sure your "raw cocoa" does not have HFCS or Agave (most is HFCS/fructose) added.

http://www.veryveryvegan.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/What-Are-Antioxidants-by-David-Wolfe-JD-ORAC-Chart.jpg

"European chocolate is richer in cocoa content than it is in the U.S. because European standards for chocolate content are higher. The average chocolate bar in Europe has about 30 percent cocoa content while a U.S. chocolate bar can contain as little as 15 percent, which is important to consider when evaluating which type of chocolate to eat.”   NaturalNews, Note both 30% and 15% are far to low a cocoa content IMO shoot for at least 80% in a bar or better yet go with the pure 100% cocoa powder,

If you eat a DARK chocolate bar get one with a minimum of sugar (See Sugar Protocol). Some bars are 86% or more Cocoa. Low cocoa bars can be a nice treat but limit it. Candy bars are not the best way to use Cocoa. Adding sugar to Cocoa as in a candy bar can cut the Cocoa nutrition values by over 70%. Adding milk (See Milk Protocol) to Cocoa as in milk chocolate, can completely kill any health benefits. You want DARK chocolate not MILK chocolate. In processing the Cocoa with heat, as most candy manufactures do, up to half the flavanols can be destroyed.

Beware of some "Candy" Bars

"This package of Milk Duds includes the label "made with Chocolate & Caramel." Candy critic Cybele May said that words and phrases such as "made with chocolate," "chocolatey" and "chocolate candy" are sometimes used by candy makers to describe candy that doesn't meet the federal government's standards for chocolate."   http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=5689239

Note the mr. "Goodbar" with the exception of the peanuts it is ALL very DANGEROUS CVD and Cancer producing, junk

Hershey's and other candy manufacturers are now removing the natural cocoa butter from the cocoa they use in some of their candy bars. The expensive cocoa butter is being sold separately. In place of the good cocoa fat Hershey's is adding toxic polyunsaturated vegetable oil.  Please read labels and remember even "real" milk chocolate is not so great as it contains mostly toxic sugar and toxic oxidized milk powder. IMO reject most inexpensive chocolate bars. If you must have a "candy bar" make sure it is DARK CHOCOLATE > 80% cocoa.

This is the best way to take cocoa IMO.

The Best Way to Take Cocoa IMO

Cocoa is a component (2 ounces) of my daily Pro-Cardio Drink See Pro-Cardio Drink Protocol

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B1JbOErgM7I/UPm4EZV01MI/AAAAAAAAM1k/nA1Xy4Af9B0/s1600/rapkokoa.jpg

If you buy the 100% cocoa power you maximize your cocoa flavonols per dollar.

I make a drink with water and 100% Cocoa Powder. I sometimes sweeten the usually cold drink with Xylitol (See Xylitol Protocol) or a little dark molasses but often drink it unsweetened. This makes a healthy treat that is very good for you. Brush your teeth before drinking it and you will be giving your teeth and mouth an anti-gingivitis bath. Yep now that’s a treat for everyone.

This treat might be more healthy if I used cold processed Cocoa and when the price comes down I will. I am slightly allergic (See Allergy Protection Protocol) to the caffeine in Cocoa  and find I must eat it early in my day.
