Fish Protocol

Fish is a SuperFood

Fish is a Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) Food

The evidence is overwhelming eating cold water fatty fish is VERY protective of your heart and vascular system.

Please try to have at least two or three good sized servings of fatty fish a week

Fukushima Radiation: Is It Still Safe To Eat Fish?

"Fish broth will cure anything."   South American Proverb

"Doctor Price found fish eaters had thicker bones and better skeletal structure than groups that ate red meat. Largely vegetarian groups placed third in all categories Doctor Price used to determine good health."   Sally Fallon

"Children with moderately persistent bronchial asthma may get benefit from their diet supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and vitamin C," Mohammed Al Biltagi et al, Tanta University in Egypt. The study adds to a growing body of science linking fish consumption and fruit and vegetable intakes to a reduction in the risk of asthma, or improvements in the symptoms associated with the condition."   Children with Asthma

“A large survey of Finnish adults found that depressive symptoms were significantly higher among infrequent fish consumers (1) and other studies have shown that individuals with major depression have marked depletions in omega-3 fatty acids (2).” Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

“Researchers at the University of Sydney have found that children who regularly eat fresh, oily fish have a four times lower risk of developing asthma than do children who rarely eat such fish. They speculate that EPA present in the fish may prevent the development of asthma or reduce its severity by reducing airway inflammation and responsiveness. Researchers at the University of Wyoming have found that supplementation with 3.3 grams/day of fish oil markedly reduces breathing difficulties and other symptoms in asthma patients. Other research has found fish oil to be beneficial in the treatment of other lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis and emphysema.”  Hans R. Larsen, MSc ChE

“There is an increase of awareness in the role of omega-3 fatty acids.  Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish and fish oils and aid in the prevention and management of heart diseases.  This can help reduce your risk of developing an abnormal heartbeat; which can lead to heart problems and even sudden death. Greater than half of all sudden death from cardiac causes have no history of cardiovascular disease. In fact, over 40% of all heart attack victim autopsies show clear coronary vessels. Clearly, there is much more going on than the simple "cholesterol kills" hypothesis. It is interesting to note that the first and most common sign of cardiovascular disease in post-menopausal women is death. Yes, death.  In other words, there are no signs or symptoms.” Doctor Michael Lam MD

"Many people have reported the disappearance of numerous symptoms and increased vitality within days of adding raw meat, fish or milk to the diet."   Doctor Weston Price DDS

“A diet high in omega-3 essential fatty acids, especially from fish such as salmon, offers significant protection against both early and late age-related macular degeneration (AMD).”  Archives of Opthalmology July 2006

“Taking fish oil will save about 20 lives per 1,000 patients per year when treated with omega-3.   How does this compare to statin drugs, you may ask. Well, in the Heart Protection Study Collaborative Group (Lancet vol. 360, July 6, 2002), it was shown that when 40 mg of simvistatin (a statin drug) is given to high-risk patients, there is an overall savings of 179 lives out of the population studied of 10,267 patients. This equates to 17 lives per 1,000 patients per five year, or 3.6 lives per 1,000 patients per year with statin-type cholesterol lowering drugs.” Doctor Michael Lam MD

“A daily dose of fish oil equal to seven ounces of salmon slashed triglycerides by more than 50%.” Oregon Health Sciences University

"Protein cannot be adequately utilized without dietary fats. That is why protein and fats occur together in eggs, milk, fish and meats. A high protein lowfat diet can cause many problems including too rapid growth and depletion of vitamin A and D reserves."   Sally Fallon

"Doctor Price found these diets contained almost ten times the fat soluble vitamins as our current diet. These include vitamins A, D, K and the CLA found in dairy products from milk cows fed on spring green grass. The foods which supplied these fat soluble nutrients included butterfat, marine oils, organ meats, fish and shellfish, eggs and animal tallows. Foods considered sacred included liver and other organ meats, fish liver oils, fresh eggs and CLA rich butter. The implications of Doctor Price’s research are profound. If civilized man is to survive he must somehow incorporate the fundamentals of primitive nutritional wisdom into his modern lifestyle. He must turn his back on the allure of civilized foodstuffs that line his supermarket shelves and return to the whole, nutrient-dense foods of his ancestors.” Health and Healing Wisdom

And if you eat fish, it should be wild fish that swim with scales (no shellfish). I prefer Alaskan wild salmon. It doesn't matter if it's canned, frozen, or fresh."    Doctor Robert Rowen MD

“Reducing dietary vegetable oils and increasing the omega-3 fats EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) by consuming fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines can benefit individuals experiencing chronic inflammatory conditions.” Adam O et al

"Make a habit of eating fish especially cold water deep sea fish as often as possible. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fat soluble vitamins and many important minerals including iodine, selenium and magnesium. Doctor Price was amazed to find that primitive landlocked peoples made great efforts to obtain food from the sea."   Sally Fallon

"Loma Linda University research just published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition compares the effects of walnuts and fatty fish in the fight against heart disease, demonstrating that in healthy individuals, walnuts lower cholesterol more than fish, while fatty fish lower triglycerides. Both can reduce the overall risk of coronary heart disease." Life Extension

“Several studies have established a clear association between low levels of omega-3 fatty acids and depression. Other studies have shown that countries with a high level of fish consumption have fewer cases of depression. Researchers at Harvard Medical School have successfully used fish oil supplementation to treat bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness) and British researchers report encouraging results in the treatment of schizophrenia.” Hans R.

Yes, death.  In other words, there are no signs or symptoms.” Doctor Michael Lam MD, Note lack of magnesium is also a likely candidate

“The fatty acids in fish oil, EPA and DHA dramatically improve functional ability and diminish pain in a myriad of diseases, including psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, lupus, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.” McCarthy 1992

“A quick visit to the meat and fish counters at your local grocery store can provide the raw ingredients for a nutrient-dense bone-healing broth you can eat every day. Just fill a large soup pot with beef /pork knuckles, feet, back bones and/or joint bones (these gelatin-rich animal parts contain the most cartilage-nourishing compounds.) Toss in as many crustacean shells as will fit; vegetable scraps are great, too. Splash in a cup of lemon juice or vinegar. (Acids will help extract all the glucosamine-chondroitin as well as minerals.) Cover with cold water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover, and let it cook on the lowest possible heat for hours, checking the water level and heat every once in a while. (If scum floats to the surface skim it off with a spoon.)”   Doctor Steven Sinatra MD  Note see Gelatin Protocol

"Sulfur is derived almost exclusively from animal protein such as fish and high-quality (organic and/or grass-fed/pastured) beef and poultry. Meat and fish are considered "complete" as they contain all the sulfur-containing amino acids you need to produce new protein. Needless to say, those who abstain from animal protein are placing themselves at far greater risk of sulfur deficiency."   Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

“The processing of tomatoes actually increases the bioavailability of lycopene, an antioxidant that helps neutralize highly reactive and damaging free radicals in the body. Lycopene in tomato paste is four times more available than it is in fresh tomatoes. Canned fish like tuna, sardines, salmon and mackerel are among the best sources of lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids.”    Life Extension

"The researchers, from the Hanyang University in Seoul, matched 50 men and women with acute nonfatal myocardial infarction (heart attack) with 50 age and gender-matched controls who did not have a history of heart attack. Red blood cells were analyzed for levels of trans-fatty acids (undesirable fatty acids found in partially hydrogenated vegetable oil), and the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (found in fish and the algae they feed on). The omega-3 fatty acid index, which is the sum of red blood cell EPA and DHA, was significantly lower in heart attack patients compared with controls, while total trans-fatty acids were significantly higher. Those whose omega-3 fatty acid index was among the top third of participants had a 92 percent lower risk of heart attack than those whose levels were in the lowest third. For those whose total trans-fatty acids were in the top third, the risk of heart attack was 72.67 percent higher than subjects in the lowest third. The authors note that omega-3 fatty acids are associated with decreased blood viscosity, and have anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, anti-arrhythmic, lipid lowering and vasodilatory effects. Conversely, trans-fatty acids have been associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease.”

”In a study of older Italian women those who ate the most carrots and fresh fruit had a 60% lower chance of a heart attack. Those who ate the most green vegetables and fish had a 40% lower risk. Moderate alcohol consumption reduced the risk by 30% but heavy drinking increased the risk by 20%.”  Mario Negri

“Research indicates 3 servings of omega-3-rich fish, such as salmon, sardines, cod, halibut or tuna, each week confers significant protection against sudden death from a heart attack.” University of Athens

“A study tracking 1822 men over 30 years found that those who ate the most fish, over an ounce per day, cut their risk of cardiovascular disease by over 40% and their risk of heart attack by about half.” Northwestern University Medical School

“Reducing dietary vegetable oils and increasing the omega-3 fats EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) by consuming fatty fish such as cod, salmon, mackerel, and sardines can benefit individuals experiencing chronic inflammatory conditions.” Adam O et al

“Towards the aim of resolving current controversies over the benefits of omega 3 EFAs on cardiovascular health, a team of researchers from the Tufts-New England Medical Center undertook a systematic review of studies on omega 3 EFAs consumed as fish or fish oils rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) or as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). They selected 15 studies on secondary prevention and 33 on primary prevention of cardiovascular disease, each lasting for a minimum of one year. Most of the studies on secondary prevention found that fish oil significantly reduced all-cause mortality, heart attack, cardiac and sudden death, and stroke. For primary prevention, most studies found fish consumption was linked with lower rates of all-cause mortality and cardiac events, but the evidence for stroke prevention was less strong. The benefits of ALA consumption for reducing cardiovascular risk were not convincing. The researchers believe these results support the importance of an adequate intake of omega 3 EFAs, either through fish or supplements or both, for reducing the risk of all-cause mortality, cardiac and sudden death, and possibly stroke. They add that the benefits are clearer for secondary prevention, and that very few adverse effects were seen.”   Tufts-New England Medical Center

“Researchers at the University of Western Australia have just released the results of a study that clearly demonstrates that a weight-loss diet combined with daily fish consumption is highly effective in reducing blood pressure, lowering triglyceride levels while increasing HDL cholesterol levels and in improving glucose tolerance. The combination of fish consumption and weight loss improved glucose and insulin metabolism significantly and also resulted in a 38% reduction in triglyceride levels and a 24% increase in the level of HDL. The researchers conclude that a combination of weight loss and daily fish consumption significantly reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease among obese, hypertensive patients.”                         Mori et al. Dietary fish as a major component of a weight-loss diet, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, Vol. 70, November 1999, pp. 817-25

“My own BP dropped from 140/90 to 120/70 after I started eating a small can of mackerel fillets a day. I found small amounts of fish oil as effective at lowering BP as the beta blocker drug Inderal. Inderal and fish oil reduced BP better than either alone.” Peter Singer PhD

"Higher intakes of omega-3 fatty acids and oily fish may reduce the number of occasions that women suffer depressive symptoms by about 30%, according to a new study. Women with the highest intake of oily fish reduced their number of depressive moments by 25%, while a high intake of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) reduced this number by 29%."  Feinberg School of Medicine Chicago,  University of North Carolina CH. University of California, SF, Note this fits well with Doctor Hyman's view of depression as an inflammatory problem.

“An omega-3-rich diet from fish or flax could "substantially and significantly" reduce the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis, according to new research. The study, published in the journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, claims to be the first to confirm the supposed benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for joint health in an animal model—finding that an omega-3-rich diet fed to guinea pigs that naturally develop osteoarthritis reduced disease by 50% compared to a standard control diet.”   Omega-3 May Prevent or Slow Osteoarthritis

"Long-term consumption of fish is associated with lower QT interval in free-eating people without any evidence of cardiovascular disease. Thus, fish intake seems to provide anti-arrhythmic protection at a population level."  Chrysohoou C, et al. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Wild cold water fatty fish like salmon, mackerel and sardines are simply one of the very best things you can eat. Please try to have at least two or three good sized servings a week. Mankind has its roots on the seashore and our bodies developed on a fish diet.

Depression and Fish

“A large survey of Finnish adults found that depressive symptoms were significantly higher among infrequent fish consumers (1) and other studies have shown that individuals with major depression have marked depletions in omega-3 fatty acids (2).” Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

Fish fatty flesh and their abundant omega 3s and DHA and EPA are demonstrated often in the medical literature to be very anti-depressive.

Asthma and Fish

"Children with moderately persistent bronchial asthma may get benefit from their diet supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids, zinc and vitamin C," Mohammed Al Biltagi et al, Tanta University in Egypt. The study adds to a growing body of science linking fish consumption and fruit and vegetable intakes to a reduction in the risk of asthma, or improvements in the symptoms associated with the condition."   Children with Asthma

CVD and Fish

“A daily dose of fish oil equal to seven ounces of salmon slashed triglycerides by more than 50%.” Oregon Health Sciences University, Note high triglycerides are a large risk factor for CVD

“Reducing dietary vegetable oils and increasing the omega-3 fats EPA and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) by consuming fatty fish such as cod, salmon, mackerel, and sardines can benefit individuals experiencing chronic inflammatory conditions.” Adam O et al, Note CVD is largely an inflammatory disease

Yes, death.  In other words, there are no signs or symptoms.” Doctor Michael Lam MD, Note lack of magnesium is also a likely candidate

The evidence is overwhelming eating cold water fatty fish is VERY protective of your heart and vascular system.
