What is an Antioxidant?

A free radical is any atom with at least one unpaired electron in the outermost shell. Some Free Radicals are created naturally in the process of metabolism and some are created external to your body. A Free Radical is an unstable atom and it will tend to steal an electron from another atom. When free radicals in your body steal an electron from a surrounding compound or molecule a new free radical is formed. Unless the free radical is quenched by some type of antioxidant, which is an electron DONOR, this process can create a chain reaction which can involve several tens of thousands of molecules. This process can do much damage to your body.

Free radicals may destroy tissue or worse our DNA. Our body has enzymes to repair damaged DNA but the less damage the better.

"White blood cells generate free radicals purposely in order to kill invading bacteria and microorganisms. Unfortunately these free radicals don't have a very good aim and they end up not just killing the foreign bacteria but also causing damage to healthy tissue. Free radicals are created inside our body by the normal processes of daily living and fighting internal threats. Your body will also create free radicals because your are not living and eating in a healthy manner. You can deal with a LOT of free radicals by PREVENTING them from coming into existence in your body.

Your body has coped by evolving an almost incomprehensible system of antioxidant families to counter each and every free radical type created. If any of these antioxidant families is lacking or weak damage will be done to your body. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, ending the electron-"stealing" reaction. The antioxidant nutrients themselves don’t become free radicals by donating an electron because they are stable in either the antioxidant form or the reduced (missing an electron in their outer shell) form, the antioxidant's state after donating an electron.

Many foods also contain antioxidants.

The organic food movement was born in part because of the free radicals produced by pesticides and other chemical residues on or in the chemically produced food. Make sure your drinking water is free of all chemicals including chlorine and the deadly fluoride.
