Homocysteine Protection Protocol

     

Eating Good Vitamin B Rich Animal Foods, Fruits and Vegies can prevent Homocysteine. Specifically you need  folate, vitamins B6 and B12.

"Many of the signaling processes in the human body involve passing a methyl group—sort of like the biochemical version of a penny—from place to place. This is one of the most basic processes of life, and no cellular organism could survive without the process of methylation. Building DNA, exchanging signals in the brain, and detoxification in your liver are just some of the important processes dependent on methylation. Deficits in methylation have been linked to memory loss and cardiovascular disease. Perhaps speaking to the central importance of methylation in normal body function, there are a number of different nutrients that are important for this process to work smoothly. The most important are folate and its partners vitamins B6 and B12. You can think about choline as a key partner in this process. "High levels of homocysteine, a toxic byproduct of metabolism, is associated with an increased risk of blockage to your blood flow. Research shows trimethylglycine (TMG) aids in promoting healthy levels of homocysteine.21,22 In a recent cross-sectional survey, participants who consumed more than 360 milligrams per day of TMG had, on average, 10% lower concentrations of homocysteine than those who consumed less than 260 milligrams per day.23 Certain B vitamins, including B6, B12, and folate, also aid in maintaining normal homocysteine levels."   Life Extension

Cooking and food processing destroy natural folate.

Three nutrients are REQUIRED to prevent homocysteine DAMAGE. Folate, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B6.

The homocysteine itself does not DIRECTLY kill you. Homocysteine chemically burns and damages your arteries among other things. IF you have sufficient Vitamin C in your body your body probably can repair this damage. In fact, the risk for heart disease triples when the homocysteine blood level exceeds 15.8 umol/L - a reading still considered by many to be within the "normal” range (The optimum target should be under 8 umol/L). Worse yet, the odds of heart disease are directly proportional to the homocysteine concentration. The Homocysteine Cycle

“Homocysteine is mostly remethylated with new methyl carbons supplied by folic acid.” Ratnam et al

"Many of the signaling processes in the human body involve passing a methyl group—sort of like the biochemical version of a penny—from place to place. This is one of the most basic processes of life, and no cellular organism could survive without the process of methylation. Building DNA, exchanging signals in the brain, and detoxification in your liver are just some of the important processes dependent on methylation. Deficits in methylation have been linked to memory loss and cardiovascular disease. Perhaps speaking to the central importance of methylation in normal body function, there are a number of different nutrients that are important for this process to work smoothly. The most important are folate and its partners vitamins B6 and B12. You can think about choline as a key partner in this process. “Folic acid supplementation has been shown to reduce homocysteine levels in postmenopausal women even though none of the women tested as deficient by standard lab measures.” Brattstrom et al   Note this shows you need to supply the B Vitamins EVEN IF your "testing" shows no or very low homocysteine

  

Homocysteine an amino acid is a natural body product of the cysteine (See L-Cysteine Protocol) cycle.

Red meat and dairy are the most prodigious producers of methionine which is converted into homocysteine. If you consume a lot of these be sure to get PLENTY of the B vitamins and other requirements to convert your above average homocysteine.

Once Homocysteine is created it should be naturally almost instantly converted to methionine or another harmless substance by your body IF your body has the tools to do it. When we ate a more natural God made diet there was usually no problem. But with our current crap diet there is almost always a lack of B Vitamins.

Excess circulating Homocysteine produces H2O2 that may chemically burn your arteries’ thus indirectly starting the plaque (See Arterial Plaque Protocol) build up that leads to a heart attack (See Cardiovascular Disease Protection Protocol) or Stroke. The lower your level of homocysteine the better but most physicians are, incorrectly, happy with levels below 5 pmol/L.

Homocysteine increases the levels of fibrinogen and fibrin in your blood also contributing to cardiovascular disease. Homocysteine acts as a free radical and inhibits your body from making some important products including Collagen. Homocysteine is linked with so much body DAMAGE you MUST pay attention.

Thus two things should be very clear

"Importantly, even minor elevation of homocysteine levels can significantly increase the risk of stroke and heart disease."

1) Only Red Meat and Dairy normally lead to high homocysteine blood levels

2) You MUST provide CONSTANT blood content of Folate, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B6 as well as all the Vitamin B Complex vitamins regardless of your blood homocysteine levels. ALL your homocysteine needs to be instantly converted back to harmless amino acids et al.

"More than twenty studies with over 2,000 subjects reveal “remarkably consistent” findings regarding the relationship between elevated homocysteine levels and cardiovascular diseases. Patients suffering from stroke and other cardiovascular diseases tend to have higher blood levels of homocysteine (hyperhomocysteinemia) than do subjects without disease. Importantly, even minor elevation of homocysteine levels can significantly increase the risk of stroke and heart disease. A number of studies have shown that homocysteine increases platelet adhesion and coagulation abnormalities, resulting in increased arterial and venous clots, leading to strokes and heart attacks. (1,2) One paper that reviewed eight studies totaling 2,400 patients revealed that risk of developing thrombosis (clots in blood vessels) was up to thirteen times greater in people with elevated homocysteine. IMO this ( > 4 - 8 pmol/L )  homocysteine level should be more like ( > 1 - 5 pmol/L ) IOWs shoot for NOTHING and fail by a tiny margin.
