Iron Protocol

Iron is a Required Trace Mineral and Essential Nutrient

    

Iron is a very difficult Nutrient to deal with. Most Men have too much and many Women too little.

“Iron is necessary, but it also must be controlled to maintain health. Adults accumulate 1 excess mg of iron per day of life. Unless iron levels are controlled, this mineral will accelerate aging, encourage the growth of unfriendly organisms and increase the risk for diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Natural iron chelators can be used to keep iron in check --- like green tea and IP6 rice bran extract.” Bill Sardi  Note if you keep up with iron chelating supplements and foods you can get rid of this excess iron before it accumulates in your body.

Over 35% of fertile menstruating females are anemic and have symptoms of fatigue, pale skin, leg cramps in bed and cold hands and feet. Anemic wives slowly kill their husbands choosing foods that are rich in a single mineral. Growing children are at risk for attention deficit disorder because of a shortage of the same mineral. By middle age, males will store twice as much of this mineral and experience twice the diabetes, cancer and heart disease as females. Iron is vital. It helps carry oxygen to all 100 Trillion cells in your body among other things. Your body rigorously conserves iron. About the only way your body will give up its iron is thru bleeding and sweat (See Sweat Protocol). Women lose some blood each month during menstruation. Men are not as fortunate. Too much Iron can be strongly inflammatory (See Inflammation Protocol) as unbound iron acts as a catalyst in free radical reactions. There is strong evidence that many, probably most non-elderly, adult men have WAY too MUCH iron while many menstruating women have too LITTLE iron. The elderly and children may need more Iron.

      

Why do we Humans have this Dilemma with Iron?

IMO it’s because when we developed we bleed much more frequently than today. Serious bleeding was once a very common occurrence for the human race. We humans are designed to frequently lose blood. Menstruating women still lose blood at about the same rate as their progenitor sisters while we men often suffer from the built up Iron stores because we do not bleed as freely as we once did.

When men were bleeding, often heavy life threatening bleeding several times a year, our bodies learned to CONSERVE any and all IRON or we died. It is that simple.

Iron too Low?

A blood test (See Medical Testing Protocol) can be some help although you will need to research how to interpret the blood test results; not easy. In either case do not take iron supplements, eat a LOT of iron rich foods or foods fortified with iron WITHOUT a blood test that confirms low iron. If you are having Iron problems, mostly lack of energy (See Energy Protocol), and suspect your iron levels are low or high see an integrative doctor a little blood testing and a little research will get you on the right track.

Fortified cereals are most definitely NOT a good source of dietary B vitamins. They also have inorganic iron added. This is the worst type of iron to use as a supplement and it will raise already elevated iron in those that don't need it, like most adult men and postmenopausal women. Those individuals who learn how to achieve iron balance will maintain the most desirable state of health throughout life. Indeed for men reducing a free Iron level to a minimum may add a decade or so to our healthspan.

     

Iron Assimilation

"Interestingly, one of the most common causes of excess iron is the regular consumption of alcohol. Alcohol consumed on a regular basis will increase the absorption of any iron in your diet. For instance, if you drink some wine with your steak, you will likely be absorbing more iron than you need."    Doctor Joseph Mercola MD

Your body will assimilate the iron in meat even if you have excess iron to start. Iron in vegetables and fruit will be poorly assimilated should you have excess iron. Vitamin C (See Vitamin C Protocol) can cause up to 70% more of the iron in a food to be absorbed. If you are a man you probably want to avoid this. Women may want to eat an orange and perhaps a nip of wine or otherwise get some vitamin C and alcohol into their meat containing meal if they need more Iron.

Calcium (See Calcium Protocol) with a meal can cause the iron in the meal to be less assimilated by about one half. IMO don’t use calcium supplements but eat a calcium containing food, such as a green salad, with your meat if  you want less iron.  This is yet another reason for salads (See Salad Protocol). Fiber eaten with iron can lessen the iron’s absorption. Men especially HAVE to eat this calcium with any Iron rich meal.

Alfalfa may Play a Role in Iron Assimilation for Both Men and Women

Caution: Alfalfa is high in iron. IMO most men should be avoiding iron and should assure free iron chelation before eating it. For this reason as a man I rarely eat Alfalfa unless I am loading up on minerals. For a pre-menopausal woman Alfalfa Sprouts may be a part of her obtaining more Iron if she tests anemic and badly needs iron, as many do.

     

How I handle my Iron as a male

I assume if I can shovel heavy snow for three or four hours without fatigue or perform some other lengthy hard physical work, such as a four hour bicycle ride, my red blood cells have enough Iron and I have enough red blood cells to fully oxygenate my body under a heavy oxygen demand load, over a lengthy period. This means I have sufficient Iron.

Once every month or so I perform a day of free iron and other heavy metal chelation (See Chelation Protocol) by taking a half-gram to a gram of IP-6 between meals for a day. I also continuously take foods and supplements which mop up free iron. With this regime I am not afraid to occasionally eat foods very high in iron such as my loved liver. This should mop up any free Iron and some other free toxic metals. I want to error on the side of too little iron while making sure I have plenty of iron to stay active all day and into the night. Your three grams of vitamin C/day will also help chelate free iron.

How a Female might handle her Iron

Exactly the same as a male with the addition of blood testing where required and a lot more research. A woman who is having problems with a lack of energy should be tested for iron levels IMO. MANY (up to 35%) of premenopausal women are low in iron. It's simple to quickly get your iron levels up should you require it. Lots of lightly cooked free range beef taken together with vitamin C should have you out running in a couple weeks. You will know iron was your problem because your increase in energy will be noticeable almost from the first day.

There are plenty of non-meat iron sources to choose from if you want to go low on the meat. IMO there is RARELY a need for iron supplementation. Ladies get your iron from FOOD;  unless your GOOD doctor says otherwise. If I were a woman needing iron I would try the red meat taken together with a gram of Vitamin C and other iron rich FOOD for a few weeks BEFORE any iron supplementation.

Many iron supplements are NOT optimal and may be quite dangerous.

      

These substances and Actions Help Remove Excess Free Iron from your Body

Attention all Men Continuously DO THIS. Women with high Iron also.

For us men and post menopausal women USUALLY we have WAY too much iron. Taking a curcumin, quercetin  and other iron chelating foods continuously as a supplement or perhaps with your Whey is a good way IMO to chelate excess free iron. About the only way your body will normally give up its iron is thru bleeding and sweat (See Sweat Protocol) so sweating is a GREAT alternative to bleeding. This normally excess iron in MEN can take a decade or more off our lives.

  • Whole Blood Donation:   Don't even think about plasma donation  IMO: the best way, HOWEVER IMO be careful. I have so little confidence in the Medical Industry I cannot donate although I would love to. Plasma donation has me totally turned off. Decades ago I gave blood often. SAD.

 I take/do almost all of these. Male excess Iron often takes a DECADE or more from our lives and may help cripple us decades before it helps kill us. Excess Iron, which MOST MALES HAVE, promotes free radicals, cancer, disease and LOTS of bad stuff.
