"Those with normal zinc status were not only less likely to develop pneumonia, they also had fewer new prescriptions for antibiotics, a shorter duration of pneumonia, and fewer days of antibiotic use compared with residents who had low zinc levels. We elders must be especially sure of getting good zinc as pneumonia is a LARGE threat to us. MANY elders have very low zinc levels for several reasons. A good zinc-citrate or zinc-gluconate supplement can rectify this and is IMO required for us seniors.

Zinc is critical to prostate health. IMO it is important for a man to take some supplemental zinc, say 50 mg or so for every ejaculation he is pleasured with. You do not want to run low in zinc if you want to remain active in the bedroom and many of us are low in zinc to begin with. Life Extension recommends between 30-85 mg a day.

Almost all of a man’s zinc is stored in his prostate. An enlarged prostate may be a call for more Zinc, just as an enlarged thyroid is a call for more iodine.

   

Zinc and Copper need Care

Both Zinc and copper (See Copper Protocol) need looking after. They can be difficult for many people and deficiencies or excesses can lead to subtle hard to diagnose problems. Be sure to chelate excess Zinc.  You should shoot for ingestion on average of ten times the zinc (25mg/day) as copper (2.5mg/day).

Sources of Zinc include oysters, red meat, poultry, some seafood, whole grains, dry beans, and nuts, psyllium (See Psyllium Protocol) and my favorite snack pumpkin seeds (See Pumpkin Seed Protocol).

Sources of Zinc include oysters, red meat, poultry, some seafood, whole grains, dry beans, and nuts, psyllium (See Psyllium Protocol) and my favorite snack Pumpkin Seeds. Most seeds are high in zinc.

If you are not eating a lot of red meat IMO make sure you are getting at least 30 mg/day from your diet. The older you get the more you supplement. I often take 50 mg/day.

Zinc is often hard for me to get, as I don’t eat a lot of red meat and many the other zinc sources and my zinc is rapidly depleted through exercise and sweat.

There is evidence that taking about 60mg – 100mg of zinc gluconate for three to six or so consecutive days has a protective effect on the body including arterial and other cardiovascular health. I try to take 100 mg/day of zinc for three to five consecutive days once a season or so. This seems to help my vision also.

If I get a cold I’ll also take the lozenges. Taking ionic zinc acetate lozenges has been shown to significantly shorten the length of a cold.  Do not chew  or sallow the lozenges, let the lozenges SLOWLY dissolve in your mouth to distribute the zinc in your mouth, throat and upper respiratory tract for its toxic effects on viruses and other invaders.

I often use zinc oxide (See Skin Protection Protocol) as a sun block; some of this zinc is taken into my body transdermally. After eating beef liver which has way too much copper for the little zinc it contains I supplement zinc; I try to take some supplemental zinc when I notice my copper consumption is high as it often is.

A very bioavailable form of Zinc is zinc citrate, the form in mothers’ milk, is probably the most bioavailable way to restore zinc levels.  Zinc gluconate is also very bioavailable and offers several health benefits. Ionic Zinc acetate is the form for zinc old lozenges.

Caution: High supplemental zinc intakes of 90 mg/day or more for extended periods of time, several weeks, may result in copper deficiency, so keep these periods short and/or look after your copper. Try to take supplemental Zinc on a full stomach. I keep forgetting this simple rule but always remember an hour or so after the fact especially deep into an exercise period, ouch.
